Book is fine - but no need to buy new edition

This is an excellent, must-buy reference book for beginners in Japanese, and even for intermediate speakers who don't mind dealing with romaji instead of kana script. Its organization of verbs is especially sensible, and it's both easier to use and more cost-effective than most of the zillions of language reference books from Japanese publishers like Kodansha International.
However, if you own an earlier edition of the book, rest assured that there's NO NEED to buy this "3rd edition." I already owned a copy of the 1995 first edition, and figured the passage of 15 years and (apparently) 2 revisions was a good reason to spring for this one, but I could have saved my money. As far as I can see, there isn't ANY new content in the Grammar and Common Expressions sections (the first 125 pages out of 142) since the first edition. The Vocabulary section and an Appendix on writing systems have been modified slightly, but not necessarily usefully. There's about 4 pages of new material explaining some ultra-basic concepts about kanji (origin as pictographs, what radicals are, etc.), but you'd get that plus more when you buy any reference or instructional book about kanji, which you will need to do anyway. Some vocabulary sections have been rearranged, and formerly separate categories like "Insects" and "Post Office" have been merged into others ("Animals" and "The City", respectively). OTOH, while the vocabulary list still has an entry for "telegraph", it has *zero* about the Internet or mobile phones. The most conspicuous changes are a new publisher and an uglier cover -- and higher price, naturally. This is too bad and a missed opportunity: a kana edition would have been a great update for learners who want to keep their brains a bit more engaged with the language while they look stuff up. Nonetheless, if you don't already have a copy of the book, this 3rd edition would still be a great purchase.

SMALL BOOK EXTREAMLY HELPFULL AND COMPLETE!!!

This is a great book for Japanese grammar and notes on verbs. It even has a section of cultural information. The other grammar book I've used in Eriko Sato's "Japanese Demystified," which is also a good book. Between the two I refer to "Japanese Verbs and the Essentials of Grammar" more often because it is like a very organized outline of concepts. I love it. I like both books and I recomend them both.
This book uses roomaji though, with only a chapter or two about kanji and kana, but it is still extreamly helpfull.
This is my favorite Japanese Grammar book.

A Must-Have for ANYONE learning Japanese
