Sage advice!

Goldfarb has prepared an essential, comprehensive coaching manual that addresses just about every possible reason why people highjack their careers. It's easy to read cover-to-cover or use as a reference for specific situations. If you're not particularly good at being candid with people about why you've not promoted them, just get them all a copy of this book. Bottom line - you won't realize your full potential until you start taking 100% responsibility for everything that happens to you. This insightful book will increase your awareness of behaviors that may be holding you back. Well done!

What's Stopping Me From Getting Ahead?

Boy, has Bob Goldfarb nailed it!
In just 192 pages, he superbly condenses his more than 30 years of experience in coaching, training and mentoring managers at all levels (and saving many of their careers)into a handful of does and don'ts to advancement. With an impressive 85% sucess rate, he should be listened to.
If you are like me, you many times might skip the Introduction section of a book to quickly get to the meat. Don't do this with Goldfarb's book; the Introduction is the meat. Here he plainly lays out how and why bosses make decisions about their managers career advancements. What is unique about this book is that Goldfarb has seen both sides: the manager seeking to advance and the boss. And he tells both sides well.
Travel with him through case study after case study and you surely will learn what you need to do to meet the expectations of your boss. And,if you are a boss, you will come away with a better understanding of what your managers are thinking and doing and how to improve their performance. It's a win win from either perpective.
Get this book. Read it. Learn from it. I'm getting it for all my managers.

Eye Opening

This is an eye opening book. In fact, I read it after having problems with my own boss, only to find an example almost identical to my situation!

The scary part of the he thinks/she thinks examples is: they're both right! What's right for the company, and your position, can be defined several ways. Even if your view is perfectly valid, aligning it with senior management is an art worth learning. Think about your boss' point of view and and act accordingly.

Put this on your bookshelf and re-read it every year. The many perspectives mean you'll find new meaning in it next time.

One other useful nugget: it was clear from some examples that the employee was simply working for the wrong company. Either the culture or the boss didn't fit. Read this, and maybe you'll realize you need to move on before that mismatch becomes something unfortunate on your resume.

Arguably the best C# 4.0 book around

I'm amazed, utterly flabbergasted, that I'm the first person reviewing this book when it's already been out for five months. From a pedagogic point of view it's arguably the best book currently in print to learn C# 4.0 from. It doesn't cover the IDE but its coverage of topics like lambda expressions, delegates, generics, and LINQ -- as well as the usual topics like classes, methods, interfaces, inheritance, structures, etcetera -- is without parallel. The explanations err neither on the side of terseness nor verbosity. They are lucid, being written by a writer who knows how to explain things, and how to structure the explanation so that one acquires a clear conceptual understanding of both the various facets of the language and its overall structure. Accompanying the explanations are code snippets that exemplify the concept or topic being explained.

For those who want to get up to speed fast and efficiently in C# 4.0 -- be they novices or experienced programmers -- this tome can be unequivocally recommended. I have several books on C# -- the one by Murach, the ones published by Apress, Wrox, O'Reilly, and so on. But in clarity of presentation the book under review trumps them all.

Excellent C# programming book

This book treats in depth the features of the C# 4.0 platform. It focuses on all major aspects of the C# platform and describes them clearly.

General book style features:
- It is recommended for both beginner and experienced programmers.
- The explanations are given in a clear and simple form.
- The many examples it comes bundled up with make the learning process intuitive and simple.
- It is structured in 2 parts, one dealing with more elementary notions and the second dealing with more advanced concepts.

Content features:
- covers basically everything one needs to know about programming in C# from variable declarations and simple if else instructions to complex LINQ, multithread programming, in-depth analysis of classes and of course, networking programming

Bad:
- I could not find a CD with just the code available on his site (maybe I did not look good enough)

Awesome book

I've read several programming books in trying to decide which I would like to make my primary language. I've read several terrible, horrid books, but this book is far, far different than those. Simply put, this is probably the best programming book I've read for a compiled language. I'm not going to do this in paragraph form, but I'll highlight some of the generic issues that I thought were covered well above my expectations.

-All of the datatypes
-All of the operators (including lamda operations)
-All Object Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts (accessors / inheritance / modifiers)
-File system
-Events
-Multithreading
-Most importantly, how to effectively use all of the above components of the language.
-Unlike most programming books, all of the examples I took the time to type out myself actually worked.

The author gives solid examples that drive the point home. As someone with a bit of experience in programming on-and-off for a several years, there were very, very few instances where I couldn't deduce some further thought I had from the example that was given, and there were very, very few instances I even had a further thought after reading his code and explanations. However, looking through the perspective of someone who has never programmed at all, he does an amazing job, as well. Sure, the book doesn't cover every single aspect of the .net library in full, but if this author wrote a book like that, it would probably be over 5000 pages if he kept the same thoroughness.

I really only had four problems with this book:
1. There's a pretty large section on binary / binary conversions. I think this is a little too advanced for a book that is pretty oriented toward beginners, isn't as useful of knowledge as the author makes it out to be, and it's the only part of the book that doesn't really give you a full picture of how the information is useful (probably because it isn't for 99.9% of people, and probably 99.99999% of people reading this book). If you do get this book and you don't know a little about binary already, I would skip that section because you'll just end up with a headache.

2. Does not cover any SQL interaction. Most people looking into a book like this are probably considering interacting with a database in some manner at some point. This, however, shouldn't really deter someone from reading the book since it isn't very difficult and the information on how to do it is easy to understand and there are thousands of tutorials on using it to the extent most will. So, I consider this a pretty moot point, but it might matter for someone.

3. Does not cover ANY of the UI components. For this, you need to just experiment on your own, or find a book catering to "Visual C#" instead of just C#. Personally, I had expected this book to cover some of the visual elements, but it does not, and I do find myself struggling with working with the visual components of C# as a result. Just be aware of this if you are looking at making a fully-fledged, non-console based program (which I'm guessing most people are looking for). Using Visual Studio, you won't have a problem with the basic things like messing around with some text boxes, using events on basic controls, etc. However, you will likely want to go through some online tutorials for doing these if it's your first time using a .NET language (since you won't know how to even access some of the basic control elements programmatically), or get a book dedicated to the UI-based portion of the language (this is something I plan to do a bit later).

4. There are no exercises, which means you have to understand based off what the author has explained. Luckily, he does this well enough, but if you really need some sort of prompts (ie: "Write a program that will read the first line of a file, and then output the line that was read"), then you might want to look elsewhere.

Like every programming book, unless you have an IQ over 170, you will probably have to some sections for it to really stick, especially if you have no experience. That, however, is the nature of programming. Personally I've finished the book once and feel like I have a pretty good understanding of its contents, but I plan to read through it around 3-4 more times for some of the more difficult concepts to stick 100% before moving to a more advanced book.

Overall, this book does a good job at teaching not just C#, but basic programming with good programming practice. Yes, it does have a few flaws, but it is definitely the best beginner C#, or beginner programmer, for that matter, book that I've read. It's also a pretty easy read and doesn't come off as "dry," even though the author doesn't really make any attempts at humor or anything of that nature; it's just well-written. This book easily deserves 5 stars.

I bought this book in order to teach myself all of the Spanish verb tenses and it worked! I eventually learned them all in class but doing the exercises in this book made them beyond easy for me when the professor got to them. I had a mastery of the verb tenses that impressed everyone....and I didn't tell them my secret....well I did tell one person, I think. :)

As in everything, there are some unavoidable tasks to master. Bey has made this relatively painless, and her drills are terrific ! Highly recommended for someone who is brushing up high school Spanish.

Like the title says- DRILLS

This is strictly a drill book. No explanations of how, when or why to use the tenses; just drills. I like that they go through all the tenses and the subjunctive mood with regular verbs first, then the last half of the book drills all the tenses with irregular, stem-changing, orthographic changing verbs. Gets you confident on your knowledge of the endings, and then throws the monkey wrenches in. I've been using this book for about a week and it has really improved my verb conjugations. These very repetitive drills that I would never construct on my own have proved very helpful. Especially transforming between the conjugations.

Scott Jesse has worked for Oracle since 1996 and is currently Customer Support Senior Manager for the RAC Assurance Team. He has served as the Global Team Lead and as a member of the Advanced Resolution and Escalations team within Oracle Support. Scott is the coauthor of Oracle Database 10g High Availability with RAC, Flashback, and Data Guard and Oracle9i for Windows 2000 Tips & Techniques, both from Oracle Press.

Bill Burton joined Oracle in 1998 and is currently a member of the Development RAC Assurance Team. He co-wrote and presented the “Upgrading to 11gR2” session at Oracle OpenWorld 2010.

Bryan Vongray is a member of the RAC Assurance Team within Oracle Global Customer Support. Great Practical Reference

This book covers a lot of technical ground in a concise, well-written manner. This is far from a regurgitation of the Oracle documentation. The authors do a great job of showing how Oracle database features work together to cover HA, DR, and data protection needs. I like the practical "workshop" sections throughout the book-- they help you understand the features by doing examples. They build upon each other as you progress, covering the whole architecture.

I recommend this book highly for your reference collection, specifically for it's worthy how-to nature. It will get you going and you can use the 11g documentation to dig deeper where desired.

Excellent primer for the new 11gR2 Grid and RAC infrastructure

As a long time Oracle RAC DBA (version 8 OPS), I enjoyed reading this book and putting the tips into practice. It is a great starting point for DBAs new to the 11gR2 Grid architecture who need to support
and manage RAC environments. Some nice touches include the coverage of Oracle VM for virtualizing RAC as well as tips for architecting 11gR2. While it is not as deep as other RAC books such as Oracle 11g Real Application Cluster Essentials (PACKT Press) and Oracle 11g RAC (Apress), the book does a fantastic job of teaching beginners new to 11gR2 RAC.

One of the best overview books I have read

Simple:
- it covers a lot of very important big topics
- it gives a long-running hands-on lab as an example
- it is written well
- it gives advice and justifications for its take on 'best practices'

Each topic is complicated. No, the book does not cover every part of every topic. But it gives a great overview and makes the DBA pro wanting more.

Creative Project Management

This book was recommended by my colleague. Reading it was just at time. I started new rather difficult project for big company with involvement people from different business units and even countries. So reading was usefull and helped to make riht approach to project planning, team organizing, avoid some potential mistakes. Everybody thinks that something what happens with him is unique, but after reading such books comes to understanding that ther are some typical problems and typicals ways of forecasting, solving and avoiding them. This book describes universal approach for all types of projects with good examples, that stimulated me to see some films and read some books about people and projects mentioned in book.

Good overview, but light on the actual details

Phillips provides a good, general overview of the metrics to consider in evaluating the return on consulting engagements. However, the book could have been significantly improved by the addition of at least one complete example of an application of the suggested method for calculating ROI, including a more in-depth treatment of the many survey methods suggested. Further, some of the snippets of the quantitative examples are simplified to the point of being misleading. Finally, the concept of the scorecard, which was part of the title of the book, was not developed in the text.

How to show the bottom line impact of consulting

It is quite surprising that more reviews have not been written about this text by Phillips, because it is seemingly rather difficult to find other works that directly address the bottom line impact of consulting (especially outside the training space). Before acquiring a copy of this book, be aware that the content is rather substantive, reaching nearly 400 pages. Although much more math was expected, the author's argument that complex formulas for return on investment (ROI) are really not needed made sense after reading chapter 8, which begins by discussing the viewpoint that "the phrase return on investment in consulting is occasionally misused - sometimes intentionally. In these situations, a very broad definition for ROI is offered to include any benefit of the consulting intervention. ROI is thus defined as a vague concept in which even subjective data linked to a program are included. In this book, return on investment is used more precisely and is meant to represent an actual value arrived at by comparing consulting costs to benefits. The two most common measures are the benefit-cost ratio and the ROI formula. Both of these are presented, along with other approaches to calculate the return or payback. For many years, consultants sought to calculate return on investment for consulting interventions. If a consulting intervention is considered an investment and not an expense, then it is appropriate to place consulting in the same funding category as other investments, such as those in equipment and facilities. Although the other investments are quite different, they are often viewed by management in the same way. Thus, it is critical to the success of the consulting intervention to develop specific values that reflect the return on the investment". The lack of complexity is a strength of the process presented, and offered a reminder of a comment made recently by Warren Buffet on Squawk Box (CNBC) that the investor needs to be wary of stock picks based on complicated formulas (i.e. developed by quants). However, there is much more to "The Consultant's Scorecard" than ROI calculation, the subject of which consumes a small portion of the content. Presented are 6 different measures collected in a consulting intervention that present a balanced viewpoint of the success of the consulting project and involve both qualitative and quantitative data collected at different time intervals: (1) reaction and satisfaction, (2) skill and knowledge changes, (3) implementation, application, and utilization, (4) business impact data, (5) financial payoff, and (6) non-financial intangible measures. As Phillips states, "the ROI process [presented here] is not for every organization or individual consultant. The use of the ROI process represents a tremendous paradigm shift as an organization attempts to bring more accountability and results to the consulting process. It is client focused, requiring much contact, communication, dialog, and agreement with the client". However, the opinion of this reviewer as a software engineering consultant is that portions of this process might be utilized as needed, as long as these are taken in context, just as any other modern methodology. Although this reviewer has been known to state to colleagues that everyone uses a process, regardless of formality, since process is really just a way of doing things, because showing the bottom line impact of consulting does involve considerable client involvement, core aspects of this process are expected to be needed to remain in place. This book is well recommended to both consultants and clients, and if the potential reader exists in either of these audiences and does not value ROI, the 14 myths of ROI presented in the introduction to this work are recommended minimum reading.

As any consultant - and author Jack Phillips - will tell you, the days when a consultant could make a living by sharing the latest trendy approaches to business are long, long gone. Today's executives expect consultants to adhere to the same standards of accountability that consultants themselves have advocated for years. Therefore, the ability to determine a consulting project's return on investment is an important skill for both executives and the consultants they hire. Phillips offers a practical approach to ROI that somehow avoids consulting jargon and complex formulas. Although it lacks case studies that show how to overcome specific obstacles to data collection and interpretation, this is a valuable book that fills in an important piece of the consulting puzzle. Excellent Stuff

If there is a valve book out there I don't already own or have not read, it is probably written on parchment and lost with the balance of the Dead Sea scrolls. The author of this book, Phil Skousen, takes an approach that I have not seen in other books of this type and it struck me as the most correct and appropriate approach ever. After all, what do valves do? They control liquids (gases, water, chemicals, slurries, etc.). So why not start the book there, with the fundamental behavior of fluids? Most valve experts assume the reader has as much background knowledge of the subject as the author does and that simply is not the case where the majority of readers are concerned. If the reader did have all that knowledge already, why would they buy a book about it? Anyway, I'm thinking of selling my collection of other valve books and keeping just this one. So if you are interested...wait; why would you buy my old books when I just told you this is the only one you need? Oh well, marketing was never my strength I guess.
