A good book, but lacking some of what I like about the HE series

This is the third Hacking Exposed: Web Applications (HE:WA) book I've reviewed, having reviewed the second edition in 2006 and the first edition in 2002. While I gave the earlier editions each five stars, I don't think HE:WA3E quite meets my expectations of a five star web application security book -- at least not one bearing the Hacking Exposed (HE) series name.

In my opinion, the winning formula for a good HE book was set by the first in the series, back in 1999: 1) explain a technology of interest; 2) show exactly how to exploit it; 3) recommend countermeasures. For me, these three steps MUST be followed, and any book with HE in the title that fails to follow this recipe is likely to fall flat. The reason I like this approach is simple; in many cases, defenders first encounter a new technology only after a researcher or intruder has broken it! In other words, the offensive side is usually far ahead of the defensive side, because offenders often specialize in a promising new area and pursue it relentlessly until they break it. Good HE books help redress this imbalance by getting the defender up to speed on a new technology, showing how to break it, and then suggesting defensive measures.

I believe that while HE:WA3E adopts some of this approach, it seems to not be consistently applied. In fact, I'm wondering if the absence of Mike Shema from the author team could be the reason for this change. Mike's handiwork still appears as a legacy of using older material, but elsewhere I found myself missing the HE formula.

For example, ch 9 seems to diverge from the HE recipe. It also seemed "light" to me compared to the prevalence of client-side exploitation. When HE:WA2E arrived in 2006, client-side attacks had been popular for about three years. I would have expected HE:WA3E (even though it's a "Web apps" book) to spend much more time on exploiting Web clients given the events of the past five years.

If you're wondering how the contents of HE:WA3E compare to HE:WA2E, it appears that concepts from the old ch 7 "Attacking Web Datastores" now appears in ch 6 ("Input Injection Attacks"), and ch 11 "Denial of Service (DoS) Attacks" is gone. I could tell when some material was repeated, but in other areas I could see updates (mention of the SHODAN search engine -- though not the "full details" listed on the back cover! -- for example).

Content-wise, the authors appeared to know a lot about their subject. Since I know all three from their conference appearances, I was confident in their expertise. One small note: I was disappointed by the screen shots in ch 10. The authors should keep in mind that screen captures from high resolution monitors do not translate well in print, especially when the images are fuzzy or very small.

Overall, I like HE:WA3E, but I hope to see a fourth edition return to the winning HE formula. I'd also like to see the authors take a look at some of the competing Web security books to see where they could differentiate to add even more value.

I learned more from this in an hour of sitting and flipping than I have from hours upon hours of searching the web for answers on similar topics. Extremely helpful book for those concerned with web security... covers topics that I've never heard others mention. Also, a lot of people online... specifically with say, PHP programming, will tell you some basic rule or procedure for verifying user input, but they don't explain fully the how and the why---it's like that all over the place---but this book does a very good job of explaining why the procedures and such in PHP or other languages are necessary, and in my case helped me to understand exactly why certain procedures should be employed. (Such as making sure user-submitted data is in the expected encoding, i.e. UTF8, etc.)

Good reference but far from comprehensive

Some of the content is outdated but for the most part it did what I needed it to. I was looking for an intro into Web app vulnerabilities as I begin taking on more responsibility in that at work. I do like the layout as it is easy to understand and it walks me through the use of the various tools well. You can write volumes on each chapter that this book covers so know that this is an overview and you will be happy with the money that you spent on it.

I teach Spanish for the Workplace and Travel so I buy namy Spanish learning books, especially those that "claim" to help those who are at the beginning level of the language. This book is definitely among the best out there for beginning students! (Just skip the three pages of the preface...not sure what the author was trying to do there...using nonsense words to explain how to study Spanish (?)...please revise this! ... other than that, this book is excellent! ) A beginning Spanish student can easily use this book to work on their Spanish language studies especially if they are taking a class or working with a tutor. The chapters are well organized and the exercises are well written. The concepts and lessons are very easy to understand as the beginner is taken from the basics of pronunciation through the various elements of Spanish nouns, verbs and simple grammar and conversation.

Good self-teaching guide, can be Kindle-challenged

First, a disclaimer. I took Spanish in high school and college, but it got rusty since I never spoke it. My New Year's Resolution was to learn it--I still don't envision speaking it, but I want to know enough to be able to read and write it, speak in a pinch and basically eavesdrop on conversations. I've tried online courses and this book is better than any of them. One it's self-paced, but also it just spells out structure and particulars of the language that Spanish 'teachers' skip over or just forget you might not know.

This is a good book if you're wanting to start with the basics and learn Spanish. Some of the stuff - like how to pronounce the letters, and feminine/masculine articles I knew. Other of the guidelines, I'd forgotten or never been taught and they're helpful in knowing how to put together phrasing and sentences and what types of words to use when. Recommended as part of a Spanish learner's library. In my opinion, helpful for the beginner and also intermediate skilled language learner. If you're already conversant and at least halfway to proficiency, you'd probably be well-served to consider a different book.

I bought the Kindle version, but I don't own one--I use the app. A CD comes with the physical book, but you get a link to download all the audio files with the Kindle. It's nice having native speakers to listen to--it helps you train your ear in a way you can't through reading a book, even a good one.

The one forewarning I have about the Kindle version: there are frequent exercises and tables which, even zoomed have really tiny print. This may not be as big a deal on an actual Kindle (or a computer screen), but I view on my phone. I've got a decent sized screen for a phone and still I have to hold it up really close to see accents and details. A minor inconvenience, but for someone who is vision-challenged, consider a physical copy.

FAST REVIEW...FUN VOCAB

Very good for review of beginner spanish. Exercises are real world, and uses current vocab. Wished it went beyond present tense...

I think chapter 12 needs more explanation. The section on pronouns confused me.

I am not a beginner. Consider myself intermediate to advanced...and was not bored by this text. Great review. If I were an outright beginner, not sure. Awful lot. awfully fast...and no past tenses????

Didn't see any value to the cd.

I passed with a 90% with this book!

I took my registry today and passed with a 90% using this book (8th edition plus cd), her online course, and her Prep book (6th edition), in an INTENSE 2 week study period before the test. I also had the Mosby book but I didn't use it (due to lack of time), though I heard it was good to use along with Saia's books. I told myself that if I passed the exam with her material, I would spread the word and write the review this book deserves.

I was a decent student while in radiography holding a 3.5 GPA however, I graduated a year and a half later than my classmates since I got into the program a year and half earlier than expected. I still had anatomy classes, math classes, and PE classes to take. So needless to say I forgot a lot of stuff not being in clinical or school and not even thinking about taking an x-ray for over a year and a half. This book was EXCELLENT to get me back up to speed as well as teach me things I did NOT learn in school or clinical, which was a lot more than I realized. I knew how to do the exams in clinical and I was good at physics, but this book helped me piece the puzzle pieces together. I mainly used the online portion and the Q and A book with the prep book supporting things I needed clarification on.

As much as I love her books, there is a very sloppy aspect to her online portion and her Q&A books. I didn't read enough of the prep book to have an opinion on it. There are between 10-30 questions that were either incorrectly labeled as wrong answers (as in the wrong letter was labeled as the correct answer), or the explanations to do answers were contradictory to another similar question, and even in a few cases explanations to completely different questions all together. These errors MUST BE CORRECTLY and I feel it is UNACCEPTABLE for this to happen in a professional book like this. If can get extremely confusing when you think you know the answer and then you read a contradictory explanation to it and throw a wretch in your understanding of it. This can cost you the exam if you can't straighten it out. But luckily there are a total of 1500 questions within the online course (500 unique to the book) and 1400 in the Q&A book, and a few that I did not recognize on the 2 practice exams included on the disc for a total of 1900 plus questions and explanations. So the 10-30 questions that are horribly wrong get overshadowed by the shear number of other questions available. Once you become more knowledgeable and compare your notes to her explanations, you start to be able to pick these questions out and write them off as non-sense. Either way she MUST fix these in the newer editions.

Make NO mistake, the registry was NOT easy. Even with my 90% and all of these questions. You need to study beyond these books to ace the exam. I knew her material like the back of my hand and there was material I had never seen before. True they could have been the pilot questions, but you never know.

Do not just memorize the answers to the questions. Make sure you know why the other answers are wrong, and why the answer you picked is right thoroughly. Your registry depends on it. I heard the test was easy, Mine was absolutely not and I knew the material.

This book gets 4 stars and not 5 due to her mistakes and that are so obvious once you know them. I have read this book had many errors but no one ever said what they were... Well there you go, I just did. But bottom of the line, you NEED this book! The registry is hard, but very doable if you "KNOW" this book. I HIGHLY recommend signing up for her website "[...]", the extra 500 questions are well worth the money. I really did not enjoy the payments plans the site offered. $40 for two months, with no option for one month seems silly.

This review was lengthy and I don't usually write them at all, but I just passed my exam with a 90% and I am showing my gratitude.

Outstanding review, but cracked CD :/

This is a great review book, i finished my 2 years as an RT student and am now preparing for the registry which is about 2 weeks away. I can't give complete details surrounding the context of this text because i'm currently in the middle of studying it - however the questions are challenging, and while you can review your answers that you may have gotten right or wrong, it also explains each of the wrong answers in full detail. Illustrations are included as well as actual x-ray images to coincide with the questions being asked.

The bad part about this purchase, similar to what other reviewers are saying is that, i was unable to experience the CD-ROM. After opening the pouch that it was in near the back of the book, there was huge crack running down the one side of it! I'm going to attempt to receive a new free copy or contact the author/distributor myself. Using a CD-ROM for mock registry tests is ideal because, well, we'll be taking the registry test on a computer!

Aside from the CD, this is an outstanding source to study from for the registry. it has very challenging questions, with thorough answers for every possible choice in a question, and provides more or less questions in each chapter, depending on the percent of registry questions in each of the 5 registry category's. (so basically you won't be over-studying information that is not likely to show up on the registry exam.) Also, the author constructs the questions based on all of the educational books/material that professors, instructors and students use provided by their educational department while undergoing the RT course. So for example one question could be taken from the bontrager text, another question from callaway text, another question from bushong, addler and carlton or merrils etc.. you get the picture.

AMAZING! Every MS1 &2 should own!

Being an MS2 trying to effectively study for the boards, you'll find sometimes it takes many books to explain what you are not understanding UNTIL now! I literally only need this book for anatomy,embryology,physiology,pathology and pharmacology (relevant biochem,micro etc are found where needed). The book is written wonderfully, with a conversationalist flow. If you are like me and have trouble just reading lists/bullets of information you HAVE to know, it has been easier to read full chapters of this book compared to all the lists found in First Aid then go quickly review first aid. BUT thank goodness it flows WITH first aid as well. I love the nice side notes which feature key facts or "tie ins"to other chapters or clinical correlations. It help keeps the information feeling less overwhelming while making sure you get the big picture. In fact, there is plenty extra that you can easily annotate into first aid yet not rewrite a book or make you wonder if you are filling first aid with "lower yield facts".As far as organization, I find it much clearer than first aid but it tries to mimic first aid as much as possible.I love how every major pathology has an intro, presentation,diagnosis, treatment and prognosis subheading. I have found myself looking at cases and remembering the presentation or the drug just from reading it displayed that way (vs first aid that separates anatomy,physiology,path and pharm for the same syndrome). It made my qbank review be more efficient. In fact,I really wish I had bought this book earlier and studied it as an adjunct to all my classes (once you get to organ systems)so I would recommend this for first years as well. I think the earlier the better.

AMAZING BOOK

This book is a MUST BUY when studying for my Step 1! I do not think that I would have been able to score a 230+ without this book. It's basically First Aid Step 1 but with paragraphs, more vibrant pictures, and tables. If you are having a hard time with First Aid Step 1 then this is the book for you.

Honestly, I could only go through First Aid Step 1 (2013) if I read it along with watching the Doctors In Training (DIT) videos. This book enabled me to cover the material without the videos.

About the Author

Daphne West has taught in schools and further education colleges; she was Head of Modern Languages at Sherborne School for Girls and Sevenoaks School, and Headmistress of the Maynard School in Exeter. In 1993 she was awarded the Pushkin Medal by the Pushkin Institute, Moscow, for contributions to the teaching of Russian. Now a freelance teacher and writer, her former Russian students include teachers of Russian in schools and universities, as well those who have made their careers in Russia working for businesses and charitable organisations. In January 2010 she became the editor of Rusistika, the Russian journal of the Association of Language Learning.

This book contains errors.

I am only a few chapters in, and have found too many misleading errors.

Imagine having spent the last two weeks memorizing and using the neuter forms of "our" and "your" given on page 13, only to realize that they are wrong! Now I have to unlearn them: they are actually the feminine forms. There are 4 errors on page 13 alone.

The conversation, so far, is good. However there is not nearly enough of it. The Russian vowels are NOT pronounced as written. "O" often sounds like "a," and many are simply slurred over. The CD should contain a pronunciation guide for each Russian word that is introduced in a chapter. Otherwise we risk saying them wrong in our minds, and developing bad speech habits.

I will persist with this book, but am disappointed that I don't feel I can totally rely on it, nor is the spoken portion as complete as it should be. I do not know if later editions have corrected the errors. This one (ISBN 978-0-07-173753-1) was apparently published in 2012. Try a later one.

FABULOUS BOOK

When writing reviews, I don't have problems writing them for high achievers and under-performers. The hardest to write for me is for "middle of the road" employees. This book is fabulous because it has suggestions on wording in each section for Outstanding, Exceeds Expectations, Meets Expectations, Needs Improvement, and Unacceptable. This is a must have book and I highly recommend it.

Looks good BUT...

Lately I've bought a lot of Access 2010 and Excel 2010 books. I'm noticing a disturbing trend. In the "good old days" there would be a CD ROM with course examples included so you didn't have to type in the code. Now we have the web.

But each book hides the example code URL or doesn't bother to include it at all.

This is one of those books that makes you search high and low for the URL. I haven't found it yet.

At first flyover, this appears to be a very strong book. But still ... I feel cheated that I don't have the example code to go with it.

This is a followup to my earlier review.

I contacted the author using the email address in the book. No reply.

After a lot of work, I found customer support at McGraw-Hill. It took them two days to tell me that data on exercise files was not in their database. One of their reps asked me why I would want such a thing.

Most of the code in the text should be easy to type in, however the very useful Win32API code is quite tedious to type. I expect code to be available on CD or web site. I don't think there is any excuse to not have it.

If I could edit my star rating, it would be 3 stars because of the missing code files.

Great for getting that extra power out of Access if you know nothing

I have never programmed a stitch in my life before, but I do have some background in having done some SQL administration.

I have been learning MS Access for two weeks now, using what I could find through searches on the web, as well as the MS help files, so my knowledge of Access is somewhat limited.

This book starts exactly where I needed it to start - with the most basic of explanations of things like - where do you actually write your VBA code, what are modules and objects and so on.

It explains it in very simple straight forward English, but it gets the message across of how to use VBA to do the things I need to be able to do, effectively.

This book needs a new title!

This is an excellent book! I've barely started going through it but it has already helped me solve a major problem in a database I've been designing. I'd gone as far as I could with Access wizards and macros and needed help to get deeper into VBA modules. This book gives me exactly what I need in clear, easy-to-understand language and examples.

The only problem is the title! I almost bypassed it because of the title, "Access 2010 VBA Macro Programming." I first thought it was only about Access macros. But on the first page of Chapter 1, `The Basics', it says, "Since this book concentrates on VBA modules, macros will not be discussed further." That is great from my viewpoint but not what is indicated by the title. It was only because I got a clue from another review that I decided to order it.

Advice to the author: Rename your book so you don't lose sales from people like me who misunderstand your terminology when you say "Macro Programming".
