About the Author
Jowel C. Laguerre, Ph.D. is Superintendent and President of the Solano Community College District. He has taught French, Haitian Creole, and ESL for more than thirty years. He founded Teachers of Tomorrow, a program that recruits young people into the teaching profession. He has a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, a M.S.Ed. in School Administration, and a M.A. in French Literature from the University of Kansas. Dr. Laguerre is a native of Haiti.

Cécile Accilien, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Literatures at Columbus State University. She has taught French and Haitian Creole at Portland State University and Tulane University. She has a Ph.D. in French with a concentration in francophone studies from Tulane University. Dr. Accilien is a native of Haiti.

Bought it... gave it away

I bought this book in preparation for a 3 week missions trip to Haiti I participated in during June of 2011. It is not very helpful unless you are planning on rescuing people that are stuck under a building from an Earthquake. Since the earthquake that initiated the book's writing happened a year and a half before I bought the book, it was not very useful. I gave the book away when I left Haiti. The "phrases" that it contains are almost completely involved with asking where something hurts, have you had a bowel movement recently, where can I get a bulldozer, did someone live in that collapsed house, etc. Mostly reconstruction and medical emergency related. I spent 3 weeks at a small Christian church and school 100 miles away from any earthquake damage and the book was mostly useless. Even the included dictionary had few of the words I actually tried to look up. Instead, I would recommend "Creole Made Easy" by Wally Turnbull also available here on Amazon. That book actually explains how to say things you might actually want to say. (No, I don't get a kickback by that plug. I just want people that go to Haiti to be able to talk to the wonderful people that live there.)

Phrases, but not much more

I recently went on a medical mission trip to Haiti and this book would be useful for someone doing relief and knew little or no Creole. If you are learning for a bigger list of Creole-English conversion, then you would be better off getting a dictionary.

Must Read for Innovative Performance Support!

There has been a dearth of books about performance support since the early 90's. Gery and Rossett aptly told the world about the importance of performance support but until recently there has been a lack of discussion about performance support solutions in today's "highly dynamic New Normal." Gottfredson's and Mosher's book offers a clear, comprehensive blueprint, principles and guidelines for understanding performance support. The book makes the case for an intentional and efficient performance support infrastructure or architecture, including strategies for retention and transfer, structuring and expanding knowledge capacity, and use of technology. These strategies are especially important in a world with rapidly changing requirements, needs and individual challenges.

This book delineates a very proactive process to identify and analyze needs to build, integrate, implement and track performance support solutions aligned with the company's business goals, strategies and practices. It also highlights and discusses shortcomings of many performance support systems. This is an outstanding book, and one sure to be of great value to Learning and Development professionals. Performance Support has always been of critical importance as part of professional development -- whether you are talking about general business skills, IT or other technical areas, process improvement, or any other area of human performance in the workplace. But unfortunately it has often taken a backseat -- in terms of attention, budget, etc. -- to formal training, whether classroom training or e-Learning. The good news is that formal learning can be optimized and can provide more value when you take a performance support-centric approach to your learning and development initiatives. This is because training time can be shortened, and costs reduced, by making sure you are only training the core skills, knowledge, etc. that are absolutely required, while relying on a strong performance support infrastructure for the rest.

With this book, Bob Mosher and Conrad Gottfredson have shared their decades of experience in focusing on performance support in organizations, explained its role in Conrad's Five Moments of Learning Need, and given numerous real-world, and innovative, examples. I became involved with Performance Support about 4 years ago, and was waiting for a guide book that would help me implement PS in organizations with whom I work. Innovative Performance Support is that guide book! From describing how to talk to leadership about PS, to giving the details of how to connect with employee learning moments of need (that is really where the penny dropped!), Innovative Performance Support helps me walk through my learning something new and something more about PS. The way the book is written helps me at each new stage I reach in the process of implementing PS, and gives a vision for what to strive for - content management, social learning and brokering learning assets. I especially like the break down of each chapter into what I need to know, and then how I can apply it. Can't make it any easier than that!!

About the Author

James K Edzwald is Professor Emeritus, Civil and Environmental Engineering, the University of Massachusetts and former Director of the Institute in Drinking Water Treatment. He is the Editor of Water Treatment Plant Design, Fifth Edition. Mr. Edzwald was the Program Chair of the International Conference on Flotation in Water and Wastewater – September 2007, Seoul, South Korea.

Johannes Haarhoff is Professor of Civil Engineering Science at the University of Johannesburg. He developed the Water Research Group, a center of excellence at the University for applied research in water treatment.

This is an excellent reference guide on dimensional modeling. The book is chock full of examples (very comprehensive examples), and it is written in a very clear to the point writing style. I found myself highlighting passages, and enjoyed reading the advanced techniques such as on multi-valued dimensions and the various ways of managing history. This book assumes you know the basics of data modeling. (If you need the basics, I would make a completely unbiased recommendation for my book, Data Modeling Made Simple).

What I also like about this book is that it is architecture-independent and Chris Adamson's techniques work for various data warehouse architectures and he explains how it fits in with the more common architectures of the Hub and Bus.

I also very much appreciated the "Further Reading" sections at the end of each chapter.

You won't find a more detailed book on dimensional modeling even if you look really hard!
Professional modelers who have already read Kimball's books (like the essential "The Data Warehouse Toolkit") will appreciate the fact that Chris Adamson takes the concepts expressed in those books a step further and goes into considerable more detail, which happens to be very useful, particularly with more advanced techniques.
In fact, even the most complex design situations, which used to require a lot of thinking and experience to be implemented correctly, become clear and can be mastered by anyone who has read this book, because they are explained with lots of examples and from different perspectives.
Also, the organization of the book around technical topics (Dimension design, Fact table design, Performance...) makes it easier to use it as a reference as compared to the Kimball's book, which is organized around examples taken from various different industries.
In conclusion, this is the kind of book that leaves no gaps between theory and practice, I highly recommend it.

Great for both Star and Snowflake Schemas

This book really deserves its 5 stars. It is, by far, the best book on data warehousing I have ever read.

Not only is the content very precise and comprehensive, but it is also very well written.

Data Warehousing concepts are notoriously difficult to explain. That's why so many well-meaning DW books comes short. If you can only read one book on DW design, then make it this one.

Contrary to the title, the book covers Snowflake Schema quite adeptly, and the author is careful to list all the pros and cons of going from Star to Snowflake. That leap from star to snowflake should always be taken with considerable thought.

The book is light both on data analytics and ETL. This book is almost all about Star and Snowflake schemas.

Pros:
1)The best book on data warehousing design I have ever read.
2)Comprehensive AND in-depth coverage of both Star and Snowflake schemas.
3)Very well written.

Cons:
1)Doesn't cover much outside of data warehousing. It has light coverage of data analytics and ETL.

I find this book helpful, in conjunction with "Practical English Usage" by Swan that has a section on article usage. Not sure why the first reviewer of this book was so irate with it :)

Wikipedia is Just as Useful!

Practice definitely does make perfect for Mark Lester, but not quite. For example:

"There is a similar odd use of the with the names of places of recreation:

Let's go to the beach.
the movies.
the mountains.
the park.

Even though the listener has no way of knowing which movie or park the speaker has in mind (if, in fact, the speaker has any particular one in mind), it is still conventional to use the definite article with these nounss"

Presumably Mark Lester has practiced English all his life, yet he admits in his book that this usage is odd to him and that the listener has no way of knowing which movie or theatre the speaker has in mind!

Even at his best, Mr. Lester is merely regurgitating information readily available in Wikipedia. As a teacher, I look for explantions that can bring home the essential idea of a subject. Therefore, when Mr. Lester explains the indefinite
articles without saying why the four uses of the indefinite article are as follows:

"I think I have a broken bone in my left hand
(a) introduce a specific topic

Everone needs to have a dream.
(b) introduce nonspecific new topic

My dog is a golden retriever.
(c) introduce non-specific new topic

A small town is a great place to bring up a family.
(d) make generalizations

I get a little angry. Why are there four uses of the indefinite article, Mr. Lester? What links them all together? This is why I am happy with Douglas Porter's Mastering A, An, The - English Articles Solved + 78 REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES (This is NOT Grammar)While many of the examples are quite
difficult, I am confident that Mr. Porter has properly defined English articles.

Where is the source code?

I bought this book because it was the only one on the market that contained a detailed example on how to develop a service application. That topic could actually use its own book. However, the source code doesn't seem to be available anywhere, including the publisher's site, so it was a pain to type in all the code to reproduce the example.

Great Addition to Your SharePoint Library

I must admit I was misled by the title of this book, but it was my own fault. I was in the middle of developing an ASP.NET application that was using a lot of the SharePoint web services and the SharePoint Server Object Model. Although it used all SharePoint data, my application was completely separate from the main SharePoint site and completely built with ASP.NET outside of SharePoint and the SharePoint Designer. In my mind I wanted this book to be all about that and I allowed the title to make me believe it would be.

Although the book was not what I expected it is still a great book to read and keep handy on your shelf. This book does cover using the SharePoint Server Object Model, but it also covers much more. It includes building SharePoint solutions with all the tools available, not just ASP.NET like I was hoping it would.

My favorite part of this book was the coverage of LINQ to SharePoint and SPMetal. That is rarely covered in most of the SharePoint books out there. The rest of the topics in the book are very well covered also. Every chapter is packed with samples.

That leads me to the part of the book I was not found of and that was the code download. There are samples for chapters 2, 3, 4, and 9. Like I said above there are tons of samples, but they aren't included in the download.

The book covers a ton of topics and but only covers them in depth enough to give you a clear understanding of the topic without going overboard with details. That keeps you moving and the book a bit lighter than most of the SharePoint books with this much coverage.

All in all I highly recommend adding this to your SharePoint 2010 library.

Nice introduction but examples has many errors

As an amateur sharepoint developer, this book is kinda of headache. I had to spend countless hours in internet for some example to work.
Some of the examples even has errors and you need to figure it out yourself the problem.

Author should at least provide errata list for this book or publish a revised edition.
