About the Author

Barry Tillman: As a human factors engineer, Barry has worked directly with designers, engineering drawings, and software developers for nearly 50 years to achieve safer and more cost-effective human-system interfaces. Barry has been involved with a broad range of systems including coal mining equipment, military vehicles, ships, manufacturing equipment, and space habitats. He has developed human factors analytical tools and written design standards for the military, NASA, and shipping industry. He has also developed and taught numerous human factors engineering and ergonomic courses. 

David J. Fitts: David worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 27 years before retiring in 2015. In his career with NASA he was deeply engaged in the three major human spaceflight programs of his era: the Space Shuttle Program, the International Space Station (ISS) Program, and the next-generation Constellation Program for deep space exploration. During ISS and Constellation development phases, Mr. Fitts served the Agency as the Chief of the Habitability and Human Factors Branch, which focuses on ensuring human capabilities and limitations are strongly integrated into human spaceflight programs’ systems engineering and management processes. 

Wesley E. Woodson (deceased) was president of Man Factors Associates, a human factors consulting firm in El Cajon, CA.  Experienced in both military and domestic systems and product design in a broad range of applications, he was the author of the first edition of Human Factor Design Handbook: Human Engineering Guide for Equipment Designers (University of California Press, 1964).

Rhonda Rose-Sundholm:  Rhonda has over 26 years of communications experience in the aerospace industry.  She has worked directly with scientists, engineers and physicians to organize and communicate their information to diverse audiences. She has a background in business administration, configuration management, and information systems, including website design and management.

Peggy Tillman: Peggy was president of a human factors/ergonomics company for over 20 years.  She written, illustrated and designed numerous books, presentations, and reports. Ms.  Tillman has a degree in behavioral psychology and a teaching credential.  She is listed in Marquis Who's Who in the West and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.

About the Author

Steve Springer is a fulltime classroom teacher with a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University, with a special focus on the arts throughout the subject areas and the incorporation of technology into the curriculum. Steve has spent time in South Africa training teachers through a program he started called "Reach and Teach". He also presents at bilingual conferences, new teacher conferences and regularly attends children’s literature conferences. He has also illustrated six McGraw-Hill titles.

Brandy Alexander has his Master's in Fine Arts from CSU, Los Angeles which lends itself to creative classroom instruction and pedagogy. Brandy is a full time classroom teacher in Los Angeles and a part-time faculty member at CSULA where he teaches courses on classroom design, student teaching portfolio preparation, and serves as a master teacher for student teachers, while also presenting at new teacher conferences from year-to-year.

Kimberly Persiani-Becker, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor at California State University, Los Angeles in the area of Curriculum and Instruction. She presents at local and international conferences for bilingual education, children's literature, gender equity and moral and character education.

These authors have sold more than 70,000 copies of their books The Organized Teacher, The Creative Teacher, The Festive Teacher and The Master Teacher. Their next project, The Organized Teacher's Guide to Building Character, will also publish in Summer 2010.

Excellent book and well written/easy to understand

This is the best book I've found so far on IT auditing. It is thorough, yet easy to understand. If you need detailed basics as well as experienced tip and want a book that's easy/interesting to read (as much as an IT auditing book can be), this is the one!

I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this one.

If you want your CISA credential...startoff with this

I purchased this book while taking an IT Audit Course. The content in this book is great. You are essentially taking the role of an IS auditor and this book provides "best practices" and explains to you detailed steps of auditing an information systems. I am currently studying for my CISA exam and the content in my CISA EXAM preparation book seems to be much easier since this "IT Auditing" book essentially has laid down a foundation for me.

I 3 incorrect screen shot references. If you are going to use this Guide, I suggest you have QuickBooks open concurrently to insure you catch the author's mistakes, There are better guides available.

Very thorough in medical terminology

however, for practical day to day use in patient care, it is not the best resource.

The first section is a very extensive section for English to Spanish medical vocabulary (random sampling of terms: rhabdomyosarcoma, dyscephaly, narcotic, sanitize, lenticulopapular).

In the middle there is a small section on Spanish grammar including some pronounciation and verb usage.

The next section is the Spanish to English mirror of the first.

At the very end is a smattering of common questions and phrases (but not a corresponding list of common answers...)

Overall, I think this book will get some usage with reading material and more academic situations, however with patient care it is a little too unwieldy and insufficient.

Also, perhaps instead of just alphabetical listings, another attempt at grouping by specialty would be helpful.

I'm glad to have purchased it, but I will be looking elsewhere for a quick, on-the-fly reference for actual patient care situations.

Recommended for those needing help in the more academic/reading type situation.

Worthless on a Kindle

Don't buy this product for a Kindle, I-pad or computer. This is the one book that is worthless on a kindle because you can't thumb through the pages like you would a normal dictionary. I'm sure it works great in normal book or paperback but on a kindle it is useless.

Serves Its Purpose Well

This book is not exciting or fancy--no pictures, dialogs, humor, etc.. But if what you want is step-by-step practice with German verbs, then you will find it here. Useful for any student with about half a year of German or more, it provides explanations for most kinds of German verb patterns and conjugations and gives lots of practice. As the first reviewer said, it would go will other courses or programs to provide extra reinforcement in learning the semi-complicated German verb system. It's boring, but hey, it works.

Great for learning and practicing

This is similar in format to a high school workbook- which is a great thing. Each chapter focuses on a different type of verb conjugation, providing an explanation and examples before progressing to a series of exercises allowing the reader to put their new knowledge to work (answers can be found in the back of the book). The book is aimed at someone who posseses some basic knowledge of the language; a modest vocabulary and a basic understanding of the simpler facets of the language would be a prerequisite for getting the most from this guide. I am engaging in a course of self study, and after working with some basic online classes and memorizing a few hundred words, I have found this book to be a great asset. When studying from it, I take notes and use my German-English dictionary in addition to '500 German' verbs to better comprehend the lessons and fill in in areas I am unsure of. If you are learning or reviewing German, this is definitely a must-have.

This is a good refresher, starting easy and progressing to the most difficult. It's short, but gives a good number of common verbs, explaining everything as it goes. Would be good for someone brushing up their German, or a student, to use along with a textbook.

It is pocket..meaning limited entries

I purchased this book for my son; he's in third grade. This book was requested by the Spanish teacher. The book does not fully satisfy our needs. There aren't enough entries to complete assignments. I will be purchasing the larger book that has more entries. Also, the print is too small for our needs. The entries are easy to locate.

Good book!

I was almost forced to get this book because I am taking AP Psych! If you are taking AP Psychology then this book is a must! It will help you throughout the year and you will definitely pass if you read this and do all the activities contained within the book. The book is quite long, but very informative. I'd recommend this to anyone taking this class.

My AP Psychology teacher made it a requirement to get this review book a few months before the AP exam and it was really worth it. I wasn't fond of the teacher from that class because we didn't really learn a lot of what we were supposed to before the AP exam and my classmates and I were failing most practice exams. I used this to study, however, and ended up getting a four, which was a lot higher than what I expected to get. The review questions were extremely similiar to those found on the exam and the information was organized very well.
If you want to pick any brand of AP review book, I would recommended going with this one because their books are really good for the price.

5 stars for the book and a 5 for me!

Checked my AP scores a while back! 5! This was my first AP test, and I had to travel an hour to get to a HS that would test me. I was so nervous and I ran out of time on my second essay. I spent my 2013 HS year going in and out of the hospital. My first school didn't offer Psychology, and I had to switch to online schooling so I could have a flexible schedule for treatment. I switched in late February and decided on AP Psych. I knew the test was in May, but I thought I could handle it. I only got through a third or so of my textbook, but I progressed much further along in this book. If it wasn't for this book, I would have never earned a 5! Does a fantastic job at being concise yet thorough, which is ideal for a test prep book. Will be buying many, many more for all my other AP classes. I have a full course load of AP for my junior and senior year - everything from English Lit and Lang to Calculus to Physics- and I am so much more confident knowing this line of test prep books is out there!

Too preachy about nutrition while misusing statistics

This book has a bunch of practical advice that is worth trying out. However, it flaunts statistics and nutritional studies in a misleading way.

It keeps presenting snippets of studies under the heading "The Shocker!!!". *But* it does it in a misleading manner. It reports that "more than 40% of children do not always eat breakfast". First of all, you need to define "not always". Second, other studies have shown that the probability of skipping breakfast increases with age. This statistic probably over-represents teenagers, and is not relevant to the age group at hand.

The book also repeatedly implies causation when all that is shown is correlation. Teenagers who have family dinners have less sex. I highly doubt that family dinners are the primary cause. More likely there are other factors, e.g. socioeconomic status, family composition, cultural values etc.

Then, the book encourages parents to aspire to feed their children a diet that is not attainable by most adults. Low-fat cheese?! Give me a break. Just today the New York Times had an article on how difficult it is to produce good-tasting low-fat cheese. Also, the book is down on salt, but actually, the jury is still out on salt. A meta-study of many other studies showed that salt does not have much effect on health. So why make food less tasty for already picky eaters by pushing nutritional dogma that is slowly being debunked? Isn't it more important for children to learn to eat a variety of foods rather than stressing at this stage (when high-fat is OK for most healthy, growing kids) about eating out of the health-food section?

The book also seems down on eating out, but the unspoken assumption is that this means going to a fast-food restaurant or an American sit-down chain restaurant. However, if you live in an area with ethnically diverse dining options, and dining out is financially feasible for you, this is a great way for your kid to try lots of new dishes (in one sitting, if everyone orders something different) without your having to sweat over cooking something from scratch only to have it be rejected by your kid.

Finally, it would be nice if the book justified itself when it offered conflicting advice (it's ok to have many different approaches, but can they be referenced to each other?). First it's, 'don't put food on your child's plate, let them put it there themselves', and then 'don't waste time, have the food already on your child's plate before they are seated'. The book also spends some time acknowledging how many kids like their food separated, and then the very first recipe is fried rice with everything mixed together. I'm looking forward to trying these recipes, but it would help if there was more of a selection for 'segregators' (you know, the kids who reject a dish if it has even a speck of green in it).

Excellent Resource for Frustrated Parents

Another wonderful resource for parents from Elizabeth Pantley. True to her style, she is encouraging and supporting of parents who are struggling, frustrated, and exhausted with the food battles of our little one.

The No Cry Picky Eater Solution covers two "major" areas - the first, how to ensure your child is getting the nutrition they need (with excellent charts on what this is for various age groups - realistic charts that can actually be implemented), the second area, how to increase your child's repertoire of foods they will actually eat.

For the first point, Eliabeth provides ways to increase the nutritional value in what your child will currently eat by hiding healthy items in currently "acceptable" foods, by slowly transitioning into healthier choices (adding 1/3 whole wheat pasta to the standard box of macaroni and cheese), as well as a whole section of recipes (supplied by various authors) on how to add more nutrition to what you are baking or cooking... including wonderful catchy names for these foods - Lord of the Apple Rings & Pink Potatoes.

To the second point... how to increase what your child will actually eat. Elizabeth provides very helpful information on how children develop their sense of taste, how this is developmental and not established at birth - this leads to a different way to conceptualize what the "battle" is actually about and how to approach it. This area was our biggest challenge in our home... we had done the "sneaky" approach of getting nutrition in our son (now 4) but wanted him to "want" the asparagus and other "healthy choices".

Over the last three weeks, we have implemented and used some of the techniques - in the very large section on Tips, Tricks, & Tactics (nearly 70 pages) and have honestly been surprised at the positive results - tasting foods of different texture, shape, colour as well as using this while on vacation which Elizabeth addresses how eating out with children is another separate challenge. An example she uses in the book is how the grilled cheese sandwich at home looks very different at a restuarant... armed with her suggestions, we tested this theory with our son, ordering the always rejected grilled cheese sandwich from the restuarant and used some of her suggestions and amazingly, he not only tried it, but "chose" that he liked it and ate it.

I highly recommend this book to parents who are exhausted, feel they have given up or are about to, and who just want mealtime to not be approached with anxiety, stress, and fights.

Thank you Elizabeth for another wonderful book that is already producing results in areas we had nearly given up on!!

Do you have a picky eater? Me too, but thanks to this book, maybe not forever.

When I discovered this book, I snapped it up and read it through. It is easy to read, trim with only the most pertinent information that is highly usable. This book shines by giving the reader an understanding and empathy for what our children are going through and comfort that their behavior is normal, (our children aren't trying to drive us nuts). I no longer feel guilty about my daughter's food preferences and can focus that misspent energy on tactics that are guiding her towards making healthy choices.

How This Book Works
This book is divided into four sections:

What You Really Need To Know About Picky Eaters
This section defines what a picky eater is and gives you some reassurance that picky eating is not only normal behavior for kids is part of our biological wiring. For example, kids crave energy dense foods that are easy to break down, (i.e. carbs) to power their rapidly growing brains and bodies as well as their constant motion. Also, bitter flavors can be an indicator of a toxic substance and kids' natural aversion to bitter is a evolutionary protector against ingesting toxic plants. Perhaps this could be used to our advantage, I'm thinking kale flavored crayons and Play-Doh...

This section also contains Food Facts that delineates some of the common problems in our modern diets and offers gentle solutions for rectifying those issues.

The Fundamental Four: Attitude, Environment, Amounts and Rules
Attitude reminds us to keep our eye on long term goals by not waging war on our children each mealtime. Environment reminds us that if we want our children to eat healthy, then our pantries and refrigerators need to be filled with healthy foods and they need to see us enjoying those foods too. Amounts has easy-to-read charts that show daily calorie and nutrition requirements and how to meet them through your child's meals and snacks. The Rules section covers many of the contemporary food rules and whether or not following each is a good idea. Some of them are surprising, such as "Rule: Make your child's diet nutritionally balanced at each meal." (Something I've always strived to do.) Verdict: Break it! Upon reading the logic and research as to why, I think to myself... OhHHhhh...

Tips, Tricks and Tactics: Solving Picky Eater Problems
Now that we the parents are properly educated on the topic of feeding our brood, it's time for the fun stuff! The next 70 pages are filled with fun, gentle ideas for improving your child's overall diet while saving us some grey hair. I've been battling this issue for quite some time so I was doubtful that I'd find anything new. There were perhaps a dozen ideas that had never occurred to me and the ones I had already tried, I found I gave up too soon or could have tried it in a slightly different way. One surprise was learning that a child may need to be exposed to a new food 10 to 15 times before they'll even want to taste it. My daughter was lucky if I'd let her get away without trying a new food on the first day! No wonder she's worried whenever I set down an unfamiliar meal, she's sure I'm going to be pressuring her into eating some. That anxiety and pressure from me is going to ensure she rejects it out of hand. Another ah-ha moment for me. Play it cool... and hamm up the mmmMMMmmm--soo good.

The Experts' Favorites: Recipes Even Your Picky Eater Will Love
This section provides recipes from the authors of seven different kid friendly cookbooks! I plan to try them all except the two by the author whose book I already own. I have picked up the Sneaky Chef cookbook by Missy LaPine no less than a dozen times, during trips to the bookstore, only to put it back on the shelf. Now I can try out a sampling of her recipes before I invest in another would-be doorstop. Thanks Elizabeth!

Prior to reading this book I was frustrated and unwittingly making mealtimes a time for my daughter to feel bad about the choices her biological composition is driving her to towards, by laying on pressure and guilt. I don't think pressure and guilt ever wrought positive changes in anyone, but what else could I do? Lots apparently.

After reading this book I'm easier going about her food choices. I don't make food choices a power struggle anymore, so she's not losing because she's not giving in to me. I'm more conscientious about modeling good eating habits, I'm eating like a grown-up again, instead of eating what I know they'll eat. When she sees us enjoying these foods, she wants to like them and I've noticed that she keeps trying it (yay!) knowing she's missing out on something good. I'm trying to make mealtimes more fun and playful. I make the most out of snacks nutritionally, by giving my girls choices based on what they've been missing that day. For example if they're light on fruits and veggies I say, "You can have raisins, apple slices, carrot slices or applesauce." Or if they're light on protein, "You can have a hard boiled egg or mixed nuts." These changes plus a dozen or so others have us back on the right road. It's a long road, but in the interim I'm much more relaxed, my older daughter is much happier and my two-year-old benefits from these techniques at a much earlier age. Just as my venerated pediatrician reminds me, "We have 18 years to help her become a good eater." Thanks to this book, I'm confident we'll get there in a positive, gentle way.
