Written by a Fusion Guru pitched at just the right level

I now have a copy of this book having seen it promoted at Oracle Open World in San Francisco this year and it has become a foundation for my undertstanding of Fusion. The author has pitched this just right, logical divisions, easy starts and then deeper dives to all the mysterious areas of a Fusion installation and use.
I originate from the JD Edwards stable and despite much retraining into the Fusion Middleware, I needed this book to fully understand the transition and feel happy with the operational aspects of Fusion Applications. The Software is now General Availability and I would endorse this book for anyone converting from other products as well as those coming from EBS, as everyone needs to understand the 'delta' involved.

A MUST READ! for Fusion Implementers

Fusion Applications are here already and I was trying to find some text to go along with the limited training out there for Implementers and technology Managers - I am impressed by how the author has lifted the veil surrounding the much awaited Fusion applications and the technology platform it is built on. Would serve as a great reference for any Implementation or before you get to the product training or documentation. Excellent and easy read!!

Fusion Applications is a bigger change than you realize. It's a bigger change than I realized.
If I had seen this book on the shelf I would have flipped through it and dismissed it. It looks
like a lot of descriptions of acronyms made up of other acronyms -- recursive acronyms. But
I did read it, and I'm glad I did. The move to Fusion Applications requires moving to open
standards and that requires learning about all those acronyms.
I need to be prepared to support Fusion Applications. I found many resources and among
them were three books from Oracle Press. This is one of them, along with WebLogic Server
11g Administration Handbook and Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Architecture and
Management. Since I have reviewed other Oracle Press books, they sent me copies of each
to read and review.
Reading this book really helped me understand just how big a change the move to Fusion
Apps will be. The description of the history of Oracle Applications, both those developed
by Oracle and those acquired by Oracle, is the best I've ever seen. It provides the context
I've been looking for to really understand why this change is happening and why it has to
be such a big change.
I understand that many Oracle professionals that currently support Oracle Enterprise Suite
and other products in what is now called Oracle Applications Unlimited will be looking for
resources that show them the technical details of implementing and supporting Fusion
Applications. This book will not appear to be relevant since it doesn't attempt to address
those issues. However, Fusion Applications is not just Applications Unlimited with some
new stuff bolted on the side. It is a complete overhaul and integration of all the various
applications products with some new stuff mixed in. Wrapping your head around all this
requires a high-level review and that is what this book provides.
Unlike most books I've reviewed, this one has some of the best information in the introduction.
Don't skip it. In the first few pages we find - "The structure of this book is intended to help you
first build a basic understanding of Fusion Applications..." Indeed, and you need this high-level
overview to get that basic understanding. From "A Brief History" onward, this `introduction'
helped me the most. It gave me the context I was looking for, explaining how the evolution of
applications, access and user experience all led to Fusion Applications.
Fusion Applications is a big change. This means that persons with experience in the current
Oracle applications offerings will need to embrace change. Most people will be new to Fusion
Applications so this is also a great time to get started. This book is a good way to get exposed
to just how much is new and different. You won't learn how to install Fusion Applications,
but, whether you accept it or not, you really do need to become comfortable with all the new
ideas, acronyms and processes that make up Fusion Applications. This book is a very high-level
view of what will be involved in managing Fusion Applications. I think everyone involved would
benefit from reading this book.

One of the best management resources

"The Little Black Book of Management", is a very much needed resource. Simply put, it précis 94 of the better known management tools, techniques and concepts that have proven effective across many industries, organisations and indeed, cultures.

In some respects I found this an unusual book to review, as I did not have to read it. In fact, the author states in the introduction "No one should read this book; you probably haven't got the time". So, I took her at her word! Seriously, the whole intent of this book is to act as a reference source - a quick and easy way to access a well-used and workable management tool, concept or technique, quickly, as and when it's needed.

Turner does a great job of setting the book out in a way that makes access easy. There are two matrices (project and day-to-day) plus a detailed index that makes finding the right tool for the particular management situation, challenge or problem, easy. I can only wonder at the amount of time taken by the author to put this resource together, let alone the creativity in developing the matrices and page set-outs. Each topic is generally described in one page (including examples) with the second page given over to diagrams, activities or exercises for photocopying.

All of the great management concepts are here - cause and effect, brainstorming, six-sigma, SWOT, learning styles, just-in-time; the list goes on ... for 94 topics!

The title, "The Little Black Book of Management" sums up this book very well. For me, unfortunately I felt the title may have influenced the final production of the book too much. The font size is small. In some cases (e.g. diagrams), it's tiny. The book measures 125mm by 200mm. This means that getting everything onto two pages in an easily read font is virtually impossible. Increasing the size to 150 by 230 would have made a difference - the book could still have its title "The Little Black Book of Management".

Although the font-size was a slight detractor for me, the book is still a great book. I believe every manager should have one close by for those times when some structure, strategy or perhaps creativity is needed to solve a problem or provide some motivation. The book would also be useful for students and an excellent resource for management trainers. As a management development consultant and writer, I'll certainly refer to it often.

Simply the best conjugation book out there.

This is simply the best book to buy for French verb conjugations. Unlike the bulky "501 French verbs" book, this book instead takes a much more useful and smarter approach. Basically, it gives you a list of about 200 of the most common French verbs, fully conjugated, with several different example sentences for each verb. These 200 verbs are then used as the basis for the conjugations of the further 3,000 or so verbs they list at the back of the book, each with their most common meanings. What you do is, when looking up the conjugation for a verb that isn't in the list of the fully-conjugated list of 200 verbs, you refer to the back of the book to find your verb and the book then gives you a number of one of the 200 verbs which is conjugated like the verb you wish to conjugate. This is extremely helpful for not only space reasons, (the book is probably 1/3 of the size of the 501 French verbs book) but also in that you start to notice patterns in the way certain verbs are conjugated. When I first saw the way this book was laid out, I couldn't help but buying it! I simply have never seen such a more well thought-out conjugation book. You could probably just take a few weeks to work through memorizing the meanings of all the regular verbs they have listed and increase your vocabulary by tenfold since they're all conjugated the same and it lays them out in such an accessible manner. If you're serious about learning French, this is going to be the book for you.

Great Book for specialized interest

This is a great book for non-French speakers who are highly motivated to learn. I've never seen anything quite it; it is a method for learning types of verbs quickly.

First there are 200 frequently used verbs conjugated in their entirety with one verb to a page. Each verb is numbered. This is followed by a list of 3000 verbs and each one refers to one of the 200 numbered and conjugated verbs.

So if you learn the 200 conjugated verbs by heart you can refer to the 3000 in the back and know instantly (or pretty quickly) how each one of them is conjugated. This is an extremely helpful accomplishment. It is a real-life, fast-track method for learning a language. But do notice I said fast-track; I never said easy. I do want to be clear; it is daunting and only for the highly-motivated.

I have loved studying and learning languages for almost my entire life. And I don't believe there really is an "easy" way to do it without going through all the effort and work.

This remains a helpful book for those who want to learn the language and maximize their study time. I hope you find this review helpful.

Disappointed

I thought because I had bought the Read and Speak Beginner's book earlier and this author was one of them that the audio cd would be set up the same, that the English word would be given and then the Korean word, but that is not how it is. The Audio CD is good, but only if you are looking at the book at the same time. It is a straight list of the words from the book spoken only in Korean. Good for pronunciation, but not much else. Since I like to listen on my itouch while I am working this was a disappointment to me. The book set up is nice, and I am sure it will be helpful, but the CD was disappointing.

Excellent beginning

A well organized primer to get you started in basic vocabulary recognition. Each section focuses on a theme: greetings, family, food & drink, body parts, etc. There are short exercises within each chapter, and cut-out flashcards in the back of the book. The CD portion is wonderfully recorded. The best part is that the audio, which corresponds to the text, is in Korean. (Topic titles are introduced in English.) Yes! No distracting English translations for those who prefer to really dive in and get your ears trained to the sounds of the Korean language.

Excellent book for Korean vocabulary

I have used this book for a month and find it has helped me with my desire to learn Korean. The audio files are excellent. I wish they would have a little more time between words so I could repeat easier. Sometimes the next word is spoken before I spit out the last word. This is my only criticism.

Disappointing!

After all the great reviews, I thought this would be a fantastic book. Wrong!

She starts out with ordering you to spend incredible amounts of money to gather together a tax attorney, and accountant, and other advisors in a room to discuss the business. If I had the money to pay all of them to sit around and share their ideas with each other, I still wouldn't.

She makes unilateral statements of what you MUST do, but doesn't tell you why. It also has no logical flow and is hard to follow (I am a smart person with advanced degrees, used to reading complicated texts, so that's saying something!).

I am starting a small business, not a major corporation. This book is NOT helpful and has left me frustrated and discouraged.

Find something else!

Small Business Taxes Made Easy, Second Edition

Tax Mama tells you how it is in her books, and this one is no exception. If you want to make sure that you really "pay all you owe, and no more" then follow her tips and directions to the letter. You might not like everything she says in the book, but you will like it less if you don't follow what she says and you get audited. By doing it her way, you're doing it the right way, and you will be very prepared and have no reason to fear an audit. I highly recommend you read this book, and also visit her website she has so much good information that you can't go wrong making Tax Mama your first stop for all your tax questions.

Didn't expect to Laugh & have Aha! Moments

In her book, Eva introduced me to yet more ways taxpayers can qualify for deductions. The partial garage deduction is an example. That put me in a favorable mood. I enjoyed this book despite the fact that it's about TAXES. Her approach is to inject street smarts regarding income taxes.

There's nothing like getting tax advice from a veteran of marathon tax seasons, when tax research is always an urgency motivated by real people's problems. This book is no regurgitation of the tax code. I easily recommend it over J.K. Lasser's, for example. With access to the Internet, you can get all the IRS Forms you need along with instructions for filling them out. This book gives the real world advice. This is not to say the book is the only printed word you'll need - far from it. It's natural to have areas that require a little tax research, which can generally be done on the Internet.

On page 144, Eva (TaxMama) gave an example where net operating losses (NOLs) can be extra helpful. She had prepared a return where the taxpayer had office-in-home carryforwards that reduced the self-employment tax burden. This is one of the few deductions that reduce the self-employment tax.

One thing TaxMama convinced me to do is abandon in most cases trying to deduct home Internet use. Record keeping for this deduction tends to defeat the benefit.

Whereas I once was a tax preparer, I recognize value from savvy people that do real tax work full-time like TaxMama.com Eva Rosenberg. In fact, I've worked with many tax attorneys, even excellent ones. Further, I'm a CPA and perform tax research from time to time. I defer to those with tax combat experience and don't care a whit about anything else because the subject is dissimilar to other things.

I enjoyed the book, learned useful things about deductions and record keeping, and am keeping it for reference. I recommend it for street smarts with the caveat that perfection doesn't exist in tax planning or preparation.

About the Author

William R. (Bill) Rhodes is the retired senior vice chairman and senior international officer of Citigroup and Citibank. He is President and CEO, William R. Rhodes Global Advisors, LLC; senior advisor, Citi; and professor-at-large, Brown University. Bill gained a reputation for international financial diplomacy in the 1980s and 1990s as a result of his leadership in helping manage the external debt crises that involved developing nations and their creditors worldwide. He has since served as a trusted advisor to governments, financial officials, and corporations worldwide. He is a director of many for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and has received numerous decorations and honors from governments and institutions.

Mandatory reading, especially today.

The book is an accurate description of facts as they happened in the world of international finance over the past decades, the tensions involved and the lessons learned. Many of these lessons are extremely applicable today, especially within the European context. It is easy to read and for those who are interested in global financial issues and the key leaders behind the crucial decisions, it is a must read. Bill was at the center of these events and his common sense proved fundamental in many of these situations, as recognized by numerous global leaders.

A must read as we live through the current eurozone crisis!

Two and a half years ago, Bill Rhodes warned the Europeans of an impending euro sovereign debt crisis. The Europeans scoffed and said that could only happen in the emerging markets - not in Europe! Fast-forward, here we are in a disastrous and far-reaching eurozone debt crisis. Bill Rhodes' "Banker to the World" is a fascinating account by a seasoned "Mr. Fix-It" - and we all can learn from his vast experience of re-structuring sovereigns. The anecdotes and behind-the-scenes accounts from a formidable expert are fascinating. Rhodes' fans include Paul Volcker (who wrote the Foreward), Henry Kissinger ("A Must Read at All Levels of Finance") and Martin Feldstein - and me, as well. A great read - with both history, and lessons, to be learned - all applicable now - in Europe!

Want to get PMP certified?

*As of July 1st, 2013 the PMP exam with be in a new format with an all new question base. This book is for the old test.

This is a good lab manual although the question format is not exactly like the ones found in the test. I did find it helpful in helping reinforce key concepts. It was worth it as an ancillary teaching tool but not a stand alone resource as a "read this and you will pass the test" book.

Noob Instruction Book

It is very nicely done. It has MANY diagrams, pictures and instructive notes throughout. I recently received it so I haven't been able to assess its COMPLETE usefulness. It does have color coded chapter marks on the page edge so once you get an idea of what color you need for particular info, you'll find it quickly. The wide page format makes the book stay open where you need it, but it might be problematic if space is at a premium. All in all I am glad I got because a program as complex and useful as Quicken has LOTS of useful features and they are not all immediately apparent so you'll need a reference source to find them and learn how best to use them.

I have used Quicken for years. Every update is a better version of the previous. We have three bank accounts so it pays to keep track of the checking accounts and Quicken does a great job. I love the "memory", in other words once you enter the data Quicken remembers and auto enters for you. But be careful to change the amounts. As time goes by data entry is faster and faster because of this feature. Charts, budgets, taxes are many other benefits and it all flows into Turbo Tax quite easily. I do recommend you buy the Quicken instruction book if you are a first time user.

Bogle uses a slide rule! How cool is that?

This book is about Bogle, about Vanguard, and about investing. It succeeds at all levels. "Almost everyone who knows Bogle thinks he works too hard," Braham says. When asked how he handled his work-life balance, Bogle replied "Badly." When a man is so intertwined with his work, you want a biography that intertwines them as well. This biography does. And it reads well.

I mean, this is a REALLY GOOD BOOK. As a long-time Vanguard investor I knew it would interest me, but I really wasn't expecting anything this good. I don't see how you could have more satisfying book about Vanguard, or about Bogle.

It's not a puff piece. Braham does not even pretend to be objective, you hear the author's voice throughout. Bogle and Vanguard are seen through the eyes of a thoughtful, informed, and definitely opinionated observer. Braham lets us know what he thinks, and he has interesting things to say about Bogle, about Vanguard, and about the "efficient market hypothesis."

If I had to pick one passage to convey the flavor of the book, it would be this (p. 187): "Bogle says he believes in market fundamentals, that ultimately the stock market's total returns will equal its dividend payouts plus earnings growth.... Unlike so many others, he actually does believe what he says.... Underlying all his bromides, such as 'Stay the course,' is a basic faith in capitalism's inexorable progress, that in the long run stocks will go up, and that if investors just squirrel away enough in their 401ks week after week, they will be rewarded, provided they don't let the croupiers of Wall Street rip them off. Such a philosophy is immensely comforting to middle-class investors who often see the value of their entire life savings bounce around like a yo-yo during one of the market's tougher weeks."

I learned some things about Bogle, the man. He uses a slide rule, which to nerdy seniors like me speaks volumes about his approach to finance--no false accuracy, and keep the big picture in your head. I was curious to know Bogle's religious affiliation--I thought he might be a Quaker, but, no, he is an Episcopalian who attends Presbyterian services (p. 198). A self-described "religious person," he is a regular churchgoer but, Braham says, "takes religion with a grain of salt." He quotes Bogle as saying "No, I don't believe the Bible is the word of God. If it is, how did He learn to write in Hebrew and then Greek?"

"Saint Jack," author of "The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism," urges a return to business ethics and integrity. Braham accepts Bogles sincerity, but wonders about a "lost golden age of idealistic capitalism that never truly existed, or perhaps existed only for a brief time during his youth." He points out that Bogle's formative years occurred when the financial industry had temporarily reformed, "still smarting from all the financial scandals that had occurred in the wake of the Great Depression, scandals that inspired the government to pass the Securities Acts of 1933 and 1934 and the Investment Company Act of 1940." The industry was, perhaps, briefly, behaving itself.

I read Bogle's "Common Sense on Mutual Funds" but somehow missed what Braham pointed out: the title alludes to Thomas Paine's inflammatory call for revolution. And I had not appreciated the extent and seriousness of Bogle's campaign to convince mutual fund companies to vote their proxies for better corporate governance.

I learned a lot about Vanguard. I hadn't grasped the importance of bond funds in Vanguard's early history. Or understood the competitive importance of Vanguard's accurately named, precisely defined, easy-to-understnad funds:

"Traditionally, bond fund managers practiced a 'go anywhere' style.... Bogle believed in pursing a strategy that targeted rigidly defined slivers of the market so that investors knew exactly what they were getting when they purchased each fund. Typical for the period were the Vanguard Short-Term Federal and Vanguard Pennsylvania Long-Term Tax-Exempt funds. The strategy was pleasing to shareholders for its simplicity, but it also gave Vanguard a competitive edge. By sticking to narrow sectors of the bond market, it made it impossible for competitors to make any great claims of beating Vanguard in Short-Term Federal if they were investing in, say, long-term junk bonds. So the strategy forced them to compare their funds on an apples-to-apples basis, and inevitable, after deducting fees, they would lose in the competition.... Specialization [became] the name of the game... the question is how do we get people to buy more soap when to pay more for it when soap is soap and everyone on earth has a bar? In such commoditized markets, the low-cost provider always wins and vanguard was it."

In 2001, Vanguard was having a legal spat with S&P over licensing fees, "So Vanguard developed its own benchmarks with index designer's MSCI's help." So, it seems, many of Vanguard's index funds are indexed to Vanguard's own "house brand" indexes, a curious thing and I'm not sure what to make of it.

Is Vanguard losing its way? Is it reverting to the mean? Braham offers insights on how Vanguard operates as a company. He has a trenchant analysis of Vanguard's claims that clients invest "at cost," that it is "client-owned," and that Vanguard does not take a profit. These are not false, but they are partial truths. Vanguard's "mutualized" system of governance is arguably Bogle's biggest achievement. It has succeeded meaningfully at aligning Vanguard's corporate interests with client interests, and creating corporate values that have persisted after the founder's retirement. But it is not perfect, and Braham explains how Vanguard's "Partnership Plan" works and how it creates an incentive to grow assets under management in ways not always precisely aligned with clients' interests. Braham snipes accurately at Vanguard's decisions to offer ETFs in the first place, to eliminate ETF purchase fees, and to offer new narrow sector ETFs resembling the older sector funds Bogle counted among his greatest regrets.

Braham offers a delightfully scathing critique of Vanguard's new advertising campaign about "Vanguarding."

The book answered a few specific questions I'd wondered about, such as just how big the "Bogle FInancial Markets Research Center" actually is (answered on p. 154); and what Bogle really thinks of Vanguard's "Managed Payout" funds (p. 281).

Disclosures: I'm a member of the Bogleheads' online investment forum, and author of a chapter of "The Bogleheads' Guide to Retirement Planning," so I do have a built-in interest in Vanguard and in Bogle. And the publisher sent me a complimentary copy. Originally I had planned on donating it to the public library, but I'm keeping it, and I'm going to reread it.

Well written and researched book

First, this book provides a thorough and fascinating biography of Jack Bogle, one of the most influential innovators in the American financial services industry. His difficult family circumstances during his childhood are reviewed, as are his increasing health problems over the years which led to a heart transplant in 1995. To battle and accomplish all that he had up to that time is remarkable and that story alone would be worth the price of the book. His activities since 1995 are even more impressive.
In addition, the book also describes the creation of the Vanguard Group and its early struggles to establish and promote the concepts and advantages of index investing. While many now understand the rationale for index funds and index investing, these concepts were dismissed by "financial advisors" just a few decades ago. Vanguard has grown dramatically over the past four decades and it has not been without its own internal conflicts. Jack Brennan, the CEO successor to Jack Bogle, declined to participate in the book so this chapter of Vanguard's corporate existence is not as thorough as one might like.
Overall, Lewis Braham has written an excellent book and I highly recommend it. The last few chapters also explore the causes of the recent "financial meltdown" and explain some very complex financial issues and concepts in readily understandable terms.

The Best Book I've Read In a Long Time

`The House that Bogle Built' is a must read for anyone with even the slightest interest in Vanguard, the world's largest mutual fund company with 1.4 Trillion dollars under management, and the man who built it from scratch.

I've read several of John (Jack) Bogle's books and I have a pretty clear understanding of his investment philosophy. I've also had the pleasure of meeting him on two occasions, however until I read this book I had very little insight into the personal life of the man behind the iconic reputation.

Lewis Braham has done a wonderful job of getting through normally closed doors and filling the void between Jack Bogle's investment philosophy, and Jack Bogle the man. It's a fascinating story and there is more than enough material in the 291 pages of this book for HBO to create a multi season mini series if they felt so inclined.

Jack Bogle captained Vanguard (named after HMS Vanguard) on a course which gave both the small and large investor a fair shake in a world where making money almost always trumps fiscal responsibility. Jack built the only true "mutual," mutual fund company in existence, mutually owned by it's shareholders (its investors). In his own words: "Strategy follows structure" - meaning that Vanguard's mutualization leads to its behaving as a true fiduciary for its shareholders and seeking to manage funds at the lowest possible cost.

Bogle is a renaissance man. He shook up the mutual fund business by building Vanguard, and since leaving the corporate offices he continues to shake up the investment world by championing `fiduciary standards' in an industry where those words receive lip service at best. Corporate greed trumping fiduciary duty is the new normal in 2011. Vanguard is one of the very few mutual fund companies that can hold its head high when the word 'fiduciary' is spoken. We owe a lot to the visionary who founded it. Thank you Jack Bogle!
