Perfect book for a work task

I've been tasked at work to write a white paper discussing various Mac support scenarios for our Windows-centric environment. It will form the basis for negotiations between the IT folks and their customers who are clamoring to use their beloved Macs. My boss volunteered me despite my almost zero knowledge of Macs, and as a result spent thousands sending me to a couple of off-site Snow Leopard classes. Despite the time and expense, I came back from them not really feeling like I had a firm grasp of the whole picture. That was months ago and now the paper is due in a few weeks (there was an existing agreement in place that doesn't expire until later this year, so thankfully there wasn't much rush.) Not feeling very optimistic, I stumbled upon this book and it's turned out to be the answer to my prayers.

Will it solve ALL of your implementation challenges? No, but it covers every topic I could think of and is written with Windows admins (like me) in mind. It's perfect for what I need, is well written, and will be the main resource for what I need to write. Once again I'll trick my boss into thinking I'm smarter than I really am. Although I won't actually be doing the implementation work (well, until my boss volunteers me for that too), I'd feel perfectly comfortable using this book to get me started on that adventure too.

- Security and management;
- Connecting Macs to corporate VPNs;
- Getting Macs working with Exchange for mail and calendaring;

Good for a quick review

This is a good book to use during rotations/clinicals. There are a lot of mistakes (i.e. pruritis vs. pruritus) which can make you question the accuracy of the information but overall it is a good reference and easy to use.

Not quite as concise as most of the Deja Review series

I have lots of the Deja Review titles because they are great for getting a good foundation before diving into detailed lectures or textbooks. This one, however, proved a little more challenging to trudge through because it often had too much detail. Overall a good book, but I'm still looking for something that focuses on the high points a little more.

WONDERFUL!!!!

I ordered this book along with the GED book, and this book is just as efficient and purposeful as the GED book itself. My sister loves it. When we first got started, she was asking me to explain things, not realizing that at the end of the section/chapter they have the same explainations. From there, my sister had a wonderful studying and understanding things that teachers were making her feel stupid about before. My sister struggled with the math sections, so I did invest in a math aid book by McGraw-Hill's and my sister sparkled. She loved the way she felt from doing well on her exam and passing!

General Education Diploma study book..

This is a very large book of material covering what you should expect to know
to pass a GED. Includes CD for PC. We will begin working with this soon.
Looking forward to the end result. Will follow-up later.

Lucid, Subtle, Eloquent, and ... Subversive

Stephan Bodian, author of the popular Meditation for Dummies and co-author of Buddhism for Dummies offers his most lucid, subtle and eloquent writing to date in Wake Up Now. This is the best guide to the "pathless path" of genuine nondual spiritual awakening that I know of - written by someone who clearly knows the terrain first-hand. It is a particularly valuable pointer for the growing numbers of serious seekers and finders in the west who have had significant spiritual glimpses or awakenings yet have been puzzled by the complexity of the process and the persistence of residual psychological conditioning. Bodian deftly lays out five stages of awakening: seeking, awakening, deepening and clarifying awakening, embodiment and living the awakened life. He devotes several chapters to the nuances and challenges of the post-awakening process, breaking new ground in the process. I don't know of any other book that does this with such clarity. In addition to being a spiritual teacher in his own right who has been mentored by several of the best - Jean Klein and Adyashanti - Bodian is a licensed psychotherapist. This unusual and highly useful blend of direct spiritual illumination and keen psychological insight and experience has led to something entirely new in the spiritual literature. So often awakening is portrayed as the highest spiritual realization. Awakening, not preaching

As I read this wonderful book, I reflected that there just hasn't been such a book up to now. Books on awakening generally fall into one of two categories: they aren't really about awakening, but some kind of New Age fantasy like "awakening the chakras," or they are the words of someone who is supposedly awakened and is mildly frustrated that you, the reader, haven't yet realized what they have realized. How helpful is it, really, for someone to keep asking you "who is thinking that thought?" It may work in person, as you receive the teacher's transmission, but in a book... Can any other readers relate?

Stephan Bodian, on the other hand, quite brilliantly demystifies the whole process of awakening. After reading the book you will feel that your own personal awakening is accessible, and you may even be inspired to move your attention in that direction. And if you're not, Stephan will at least clarify for you why you find yourself resisting your own dissolution, in ways that are non-shaming. He has obviously "walked the walk," and is describing a territory he knows well, AND he is an ordinary, humble human being dealing with the same messy challenges we all face.

Clear, deep, and useful; lives up to the title

I found this book extremely useful. The language is clear and easily accessible which is remarkable because that clear language identified my deepest experiences and then pointed me towards deeper water. The book comes with a warning and I think that is apt as this text is dynamite for blowing away everything you might think of yourself as and leaving you with a clear experience of who (or what) you are. If you want to wake up now, I definitely recommend it.

Michael Thambynayagam has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester, England. He is Director of Technology and Senior Adviser at the Schlumberger headquarters in Sugar Land, Texas. Dr. Thambynayagam has been granted a number of patents in technologies related to petroleum engineering and has published generously in the scientific literature. The Diffusion Handbook

This hardcover book of R. K. Michael Thambynayagam spanning more than two thousand pages provides a self-contained and exhaustive compilation of more than a thousand detailed solutions to diffusion problems dealing with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. The approach that the author has emphasized and very eloquently presented in his book is based on the use of integral transform techniques for reducing linear diffusion differential operators with or without sources to simple algebraic equations or ordinary differential equation(s).

Due to the author's strong association with the oil & gas industry, the book addresses pressure diffusion, which apply to non-deformable porous media filled with slightly compressible fluids. However, the book will be an important reference handbook for practitioners and graduate students in many other disciplines such as conductive heat transfer, mass transfer in dilute systems, and diffusive electromagnetic phenomena, including processes in need of constructing Green functions for solving problems with arbitrary sources.

The four well-known textbooks on the subject by Carslaw & Jaeger, Raghavan, Crank, and Ozisk, while of great value to the field of diffusion, may not be readily useful for practitioners in the industry who seek ready-made solutions to practical and industrial problems. In separable geometries, this book encompasses a large variety of problems, many of which are not to be found in the well-known texts. In that sense, the book fills a gap in the published literature in this area. I am not aware of any other book in the literature that deals with the subject matter of this book in the way it is dealt. The book is exceedingly well-organized--a tour de force! The book is a true magnum opus. Congratulations to the author on this impressive undertaking that will undoubtedly culminate into a seminal reference in the near future.

On the Diffusion Handbook

In the petroleum field the analytical tradition has been struggling for past few decades, due to the enormous development and success of numerical methods. Various authors have attempted to create a renaissance of analytical techniques in the petroleum reservoir engineering domain, and this work is perhaps the epitome of such movement and resurgence (notwithstanding its applicability to other Eng. disciplines). As a veteran of this industry I can only relate how enlightening I found the analytical works of Morris Muskat to be, insights that have served me quite well over couple of decades of technical work; though this work has less narrative and far more mathematics, I still believe it is a refreshing and necessary addition to the eclectic knowledge base of reservoir engineering, the foundation of the vast and complex earth resources industries, and hence it will greatly serve future generation of practitioners of this field. The author deserves our recognition for his perseverance to put together a work of such scale, and for breeding new life into this vital yet endangered genre of scholarly inquiry.

OK for a lurker, but you'd need something more advanced if you're really interested in the topic

First half of the book is the author's attempt to repeat Roger Dawson's classic book on Negotiations (Roger Dawson's Secrets of Power Negotiating). Read the above mentioned book and get all you need to learn the subject.
Second half of the book is basically explaining the clauses in a standard real estate contract. This part will be beneficial for you if you have no knowledge about it. Otherwise, you aren't going to learn anything new.

Win by not losing.

William Bernstein, market historian, scholar, and strategist, writes this new book with the confidence of his experience and the courage of his convictions, just as he did in his earlier "The Intelligent Asset Allocator." The work is an expansion on the theme that you cannot beat the market by timing or hiring active professional fund managers, so allocate, sit back, and enjoy the long-term ride. His advice is equally applicable to the novice as well as the veteran investor. You get a short course on what market returns you should expect, why you cannot beat the market, why the professionals can't help you, and how to set up your own portfolio using index funds. In other words, he has no use for the investment business other than the index funds it produces.
Chapter 5 on Manias is an excellent history of economic progress, and obviously the groundwork that led to his soon-to-be-published "The Birth of Plenty" (mid-2004) on the origins of the West's affluence. I particularly appreciated his credit to Hyman Minsky on the pattern of bubbles. Although Kindleberger has covered much of the same ground and with greater visibility in the press, Minsky's contributions are more insightful to understanding the distinct nature of economic manias.
Another interesting tidbit is his portrayal of technology as being, in general, a bad business endeavor. Bill Fleckenstein has made this point frequently that technology, unlike Buffett's desired "consumer monopoly," is easily outmoded and supplanted with the new, new thing. Let's just be thankful that earlier entrepreneurs took the time and the risk to create progress.
The true worth of the book comes under the heading of "Why investors lose money." This is the cornerstone of Bernstein's philosophy stating that if you can keep from losing, you will win:
(1) Instead of joining the herd mentality, get out when "everybody" knows that something is a good thing. It only means that everyone who wanted to buy already has; there are no buyers left. Prices can only fall.
(2) Overcome overconfidence by checking the performance figures. Few professionals ever "beat the market." Why do you think you can?
(3) Understand that all investments return to the mean, thus past performance is no indication of future performance.
(4) Don't trade for excitement. Look elsewhere for entertainment.
(5) Keep your eye on the long term and don't be panicked out by emotional short term swings.
(6) Realize that there are no "great companies." The 1000+% returns are few and far between.
(7) Accept that the market is random. Therefore don't get fooled into believing patterns repeat. Index funds are the only way to go.
(8) Check your accounting carefully. Don't overstate your successes while forgetting your losses. Keep track of the portfolio's total return.
(9) Don't get taken for a ride by the investment industry. Trust no one.
It gets a little trickier when he begins building portfolios. Using representative stereotypes, he sets up hypothetical investments using US stock index funds made up of large caps, small caps, large value, small value, REITs, plus Foreign securities. The remaining assets should be split up between cash and bonds (long and short). Your results will be dependent on how well you can approximate this theories. Another catch comes with "rebalancing." Bernstein's advice here is also well taken. Sell out a portion of the superior performers to bring your percentages back in line to their desired weigh in the portfolio and re-allocate those funds into the underperformers to bring their numbers up to desired percentages. Regardless of his distain for decision making, this does require skill and action on your part, but Bernstein has given you enough help to get the job done correctly.

The most important investment book you'll ever read

Right up front, I read Bernstein's first book and thought it was a classic. However, it wasn't a huge market success which the author admits for many reasons but it was/is still a fine book (The Intelligent Asset Allocator).
Now Bernstein comes back with an even better book from the standpoint of being readable for just about any kind or type of investor, experienced or inexperienced. The math and the charts are still there but with less rigorous emphasis. ...
The Four Pillars of Investing is both a historical review of investment success and failure with a very honest discussion of risk and reward. The pillars are the theory of investing, the history of investing, the psychology of investing (which is now recognized as a critical component in understanding why we invest the way we do) and finally, the business of investing. BTW, the humor in many of these chapters has not been lost either. I don't think your favorite stock broker or investment pro is necessarily going to enthusiastically recommend that you read this book.
Much of what is in the new book should be almost automatic wisdom/rules for investors but as we all know, we usually stray far and wide from good advice and common sense. In this post high-tech bubble collapse period, some solid review of investment principles is necessary. Call it back to basics if you will. It's just that Bernstein backs it up with the data to prove his points.
What really makes this book different from the first book (for me personally) is that Bernstein has finally put the portfolio construction recipe on paper in Chapter 13 called Defining Your Mix.
And now a special message to parents of high school and college graduates: buy them a copy of this book. Don't worry if they don't read it now. Or if they look at you strangely. For those that do read it, they'll be ten to twenty years ahead of their peers in investment wisdom and hopefully, financial security. And that's really what this book is all about; not how to trade or gamble on market timing but rather on how to use sound principles of investing to manage/understand risk while builiding a solid foundation of assets for the longer term.

Best Investment Book I ever Read

I'm a hedge fund manager, treasurer of the board of a small college, and head of the school's investment committee. I also manage my own personal portfolio. I have a fair amount of experience in the investment arena across many areas.

This is the best single book I have ever read regarding investments for tax paying individuals of any economic level. I buy them by the case and give them away to anyone who asks me for advice. All of my family has one! If you take the time to read this book throughly and implement an investment plan based upon Bernstein's recommendations there is a high probability you will do far far better than if you try to do things yourself or use any sort of financial professional as an advisor.

I am always amazed how people will take years if not decades to amass some personal wealth and then not be willing to put 40 hours or so into understanding how to invest it. The "financial industry" will be happy to do that for you usually at a cost of 2% to 2.5% per year. If you have a 40 year investment period, you could DOUBLE the amount you'll have at retirement simply by avoiding the annual 2.5% fees!

Most of the reviewers who criticized this book miss the following key points:

- Taxes matter. Alot. Almost all of the data presented by the financial industry is on a pre-tax basis. Private individuals exist primarily in a after-tax world.

- Sure institutions may do things differently. They don't pay taxes. If you move things around frequently, taxes will end up being your biggest single expense. Expenses are death to the success of any long-term investment program.

- Warren Buffet, David Swensen (Head of Yale's endowment) and Jack Meyer (Former head of Harvard's endowment, just left this summer) are regarded as 3 of the top investment professionals of our time. They ALL recommend that individuals use index funds. Without their resources (highly educated staffs, access to data and research individuals can only dream of, the ability to negotiate special deals due to the size of their investments, and access to opportunities which are limited to a select few) you simply have no realistic chance of picking top tier investments across many sectors where you need to pcik teh top 15% to beat the index fund approach. It is naive to think that by sitting with your PC at home several hours a week you can be in the top 15% of investors on an after-tax basis in many sectors over a long time period.

- If you use index funds, over time, you'll beat 85% to 90% of the professionals in any investment sector. That means you'll be in the top 10% to 15% of all investors. If you factor in the effects of having a diversified portfolio (all with top 15% investments), your overall portfolio will likely put you in the top 5% of investors.

Buy this book. Read it. Understand it. If you follow it basic tenets (low cost investing, long-term horizon, rebalance regularly, avoid fees and taxes) it will be the single most important financial decision you will make it your life. Best of all, after the initial learning period, it's simple to do and only takes a few hours per year.

Great Reference, but don't buy the Kindle Edition

The Tintinalli texts are a wonderful resource for anyone who is studying or working in Emergency Medicine, but the full sized Comprehensive Study Guide is is not easily portable and sometimes provides far more detail than is necessary to answer a question. That is where Just The Facts excels. It is an easy to reference, more easily transportable, condensed version of the original that provides all the required information for recognition, diagnosis and treatment in an Emergency Medicine setting.

That said, the Kindle version of this book is impossible to use. The text formatting makes reading difficult, even when using an iPad or the computer App, the tables are formatted in either a much larger font than the rest of the text, or a font so small that they cannot be read. There are a large number of incorrectly spelled words, inappropriately inserted hyphens and transposed letters. The overall quality of the text is something that I would be hard pressed to live with in a free copy, and charging over $60 for a product with quality that is this low is absurd. Happily for me, Amazon offers a 7 day return period on Kindle purchases.
