STAY AWAY

Just took the CTS exam for the 2nd time....and failed using this book as a study guide...

I read this book cover to cover to help me prepare for the exam. Got a 80% on the first assesment, 88% on the 2nd try so I was feeling pretty good about going into the exam. Get into the exam and 90% of the material on the exam is not covered in the book, what a joke...

Reading about the elevation flags and section cut flags etc...NOTHING
Read about inverse square law...NOTHING

what a waste of 3 days reading this book and weeks prepping for this exam again...

Also, I spoke to Infocomm about this book and the response from Infocomm was, the people that wrote this book were not allowed to talk to the people at Infocomm, so basically they wrote a book bring blind...

The exam questions were refreshed since the last time I took it back in August as well...

Your better off probably taking the online virtual classroom training on infocomm's website

I just took the CTS exam for the second time. Both times I used this book to study, and both times I failed the exam. I read the book cover to cover THREE TIMES, and after answering all 197 practice questions in the book, I got nine wrong. I figured I was good to go. WRONG. The vast majority of the questions on the final exam aren't even discussed in the book. The CD-ROM that comes with the book is equally worthless, despite it's boasting that it's "as close to the final exam as possible" .. it's not close at all. I called Infocomm to complain, and, like one of the reviewers above me, I was told that the people who write the book aren't allowed to know what's on the final exam. They're told about general subjects, but nothing specific. So, if they don't know what's on the exam, how are they supposed to come up with accurate practice questions and information? Oh wait, they don't.

The book is decent to have around in your home or office as a quick reference, but as far as using it to study for the CTS exam? STAY AWAY.

Essential AV Industry knowledge

There are some typos that concern me (ie. on page 15 it identifies an XLR connector as a Mini-Din), but overall this book is excellent for what it's supposed to do...prepare the reader for the CTS Exam. Some essential knowledge of AV system design is also included. Lots of best practices, etc. This book should be required reading for every AV industry professional.

Dr. Marciano earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology at Yale University and has served on the faculties at Davidson College and Princeton University.

Terrific Resource

At some level, most managers and employers understand that their business success is dependent on their relationship with their employees. Some even acknowledge this concept with slogans such as, "Our employees are our most important asset."

Despite knowing the importance of fully engaged employees, most managers/owners fall short of actually achieving their goal. One of the major reasons is they worked their way up the corporate ladder where the carrot/stick management style is the accepted wisdom. Most have been lead to believe that incentives increase desired behavior and punishment is in order for unacceptable behavior.

Paul Marciano has written a very compelling case for much more effective approach. The title gives you the first premise of the book. Carrots and Sticks Don't Work. To prove his point, he gives 20 reasons why they don't work. These reasons are well thought out and backed up by psychological study of human behavior.

At times it is fairly easy to talk about what doesn't work. But Marciano does not stop at what does not work. Based on his experience in the field, he has developed a system that works. He calls this the RESPECT Principles.

The RESPECT Principles are based on what motivates individual to become fully engaged in their work. The individual components of the RESPECT Model are: Recognition, Empowerment, Supportive Feedback, Partnering, Expectations Consideration and Trust.

He devotes a chapter to each of the components of the model. The basic format of each chapter is an introductory discussion, a self-assessment quiz, stories from the trenches and specific tips on how to implement the concepts discussed.

The book is exceptionally well written. It is easy to read and understand. The writing is conversational style and flows smoothly. The concepts are discussed in sufficient detail with actual examples of what works, why it works and where you might encounter problems.

I have worked with hundreds of small business owners and most are following the carrot and stick management style. And the biggest complaint I hear from these small business owners concern their employees and problems motivating and dealing with them. In my opinion they would all immediately improve their business if they would read and implement the concepts in this book.

If your job involves dealing with employees, I urge you to get a copy of this book. Since the concepts probably represent a total shift in perspective toward your employees, you will need to keep this handy and refer to it often.

It is an excellent resource and it will greatly improve your relationship with your employees. I believe the last sentence of the book says it all, "If you want the most out of your people, treat them with respect and they will respect and do more for you."

Best Business Book of the Year

Dr. Paul Marciano (Carrots and Sticks Don't Work) approaches their level on showing you how to manage people. This book is that good!

If you are a manager (at any level) and have employees that report to you, then you need this book. Whether you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 company or the assistant manager of a Subway franchise, you will benefit greatly by reading this book.

This is much more than a vague "how to" book that speaks in generalities and offers flimsy examples. This is a "what to do, step-by-step" book that gives you dozens and dozens of real world examples of building employee engagement. In this book you will learn the RESPECT model for building cohesive teams of fully engaged employees. The R in RESPECT stands for Recognition. You will discover why it is important to recognize employees for their contributions, the most important and meaningful form of recognition, how to get the behavior you want, how to create the most important and valuable employees a business can have, building enthusiasm, the best ways to use praise and positive feedback, and many other ways to use recognition to build employee engagement.

By the time you finish this book you will be fully versed on each area of the RESPECT model. I have put this book to test in the real world and I have found in lacking in nothing. I have been in mid-level management for 20 years and have been through the best of what the MIT Sloan School of Management MBA program has to offer, and this book has more practical, real-world advice on employee engagement. The MBA program is great for how to run a business, but Dr. Paul knows best on how to manage people.

The Most Importtant Book On Worker Safety of the 21st Century

The most important book on worker safety of the 21st century may well have already been written, and it's not a book about safety. Dr. Paul Marciano's book, Carrots and Sticks Don't Work: Build a Culture4 of Employee Engagement with the Principles of RESPECT is well written, accessible, organized and useful.

Dr. Marciano's chapter that summarizes basic psychology alone is worth the purchase price. Anyone who is responsible for building a functional corporate culture, or repairing a dysfunctional culture; is an HR professional; or plays a role in worker safety should not only read this book, but also keep it on a shelf above there desk where they can reference it easily and often.

Excellent Spanish grammar book

This book introduces students to the world of Spanish pronouns and prepositions. Following the book's introduction which provides an overview of how the book should be used, there are two sections which go into great detail about the different types of Spanish pronouns and prepositions. Students will be exposed to 15 different topics on Spanish pronouns and prepositions. Some topics include subject pronouns, interrogative pronouns, prepositional pronouns, direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, double object pronoun constructions (indirect+direct), reflexive pronouns, para and por and verbs and adjectives with characteristic prepositions. Besides the main subjects of Spanish pronouns and prepositions, the book also presents appendices highlighting verb conjugations, answers to the exercises from both the Spanish pronoun and preposition sections and an English-Spanish vocabulary list.

..this workbook is well constructed and extremely helpful.

After having taken a night class, read a few books, and gone through all 5 levels of Rosetta Stone; Pronouns continued to confound me. I had the idea that if I could just spend some time focusing on them and practice, I could get past them as an obstacle. Working through this book was exactly what I needed at that time. It manages to teach you the subject while challenging you to learn more Spanish while not inundating you with new vocabulary or confusing you with strangely constructed exercises.

I consider this workbook to be an essential part of one's Spanish learning arsenal. Lo compre.

Type font of examples is very, very small

The book is excellent except for the tremendously annoying fact that the examples of what's being taught are in a font that cannot be resized, and the font is VERY, VERY, small.
No matter how many times I try to read the material, and I like her format and style of writing, everytime I come to another example, I stop reading. The font in these areas is actually smaller than the smallest font that Kindle generates. Yes, it's that small. These portions are also about 1/5 the darkness of the rest of the type.
If there are people out there not having this problem, please, please let me know.
I'll be returning the two books that I've purchased.

Excellent Lab Book, the author helped solve the Lab Setup Problems

I reviewed this book a few months ago and gave it 1 star as I was really upset about the lack of instructions for the Metasploitable labs. I have to correct my review to a 4 stars because Mr. Nestler saw the review and wrote explaining that he did not recieved my message and pointed me to a web site that had the document I was looking for. I had previously searched that same site with no luck, but it was updated. So to make things fair I correct my review to reflect the author's actions towards solving my problem. What follows is my original review:

"I bought this lab book a few weeks back because the text book is a great read (5 stars) and thought that the lab book will be a great asset. Unfortunately the book has no instructions on how to set the Metasploitable labs so you have a great deal of labs that can't be done. All Windows labs are ok. Even without instructions if you know Server 2003 administration you can set DNS, ftp and all the other things required, not the same with the Metasploitable machine.

The book has a website for extra material (also an excelent source of aditional material) that was supposed to include setup instructions... it didn't. The instruction are only for instructors. I tried contacting the publisher with no success as I'm no instructor. I contacted both Mr Conklin and Mr Nestler. Mr Conklin claimed he didn't have any material regarding the lab setup (something extremely strange... you were the co-author, so I wonder why you don't have a copy of the work you created) and Mr Nestler didn't even reply to my message."

Good but not 100%

While the labs are informative and well written, there are several problems:
Lab machine set up instructions are inaccurate and hard to obtain.
Many lab exercises contain references to software that the lab set up instructions do not correctly reference. The links are either inaccurate, the software you are told to install may actually not be correct or you may not be given any indication of what you need at all.
The labs occasionally contain instructions that simply do not work without unspecified intermediate steps that the student is left to figure out. For example, uploading a file via ftp to the Windows 2003 server without ever enabling Write permissions in IIS.
There is NO ERRATA for the lab manual. There is a site for it, but absolutely no entries in it at all and the book has quite a few errors.
The operating systems used are dated. Sorry, but XP and 2003? And do you have any idea how hard it is to get SP1?

Needs a lot of improvement to get 5 stars.

Great lab manual! It provides step by step directions for each lab. You need to have some basic knowledge in networking in order to understand this manual. It covers Windows and Linux based systems. It helped me to study for my Security + Exam and it goes well with CompTIA Security+ book.

About the Author

Qihao Weng, Ph.D., is a professor of geography and the director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Change at Indiana State University. From 2008 to 2009, he visited NASA as a senior research fellow. Dr. Weng is also a guest/adjunct professor at Wuhan University and Beijing Normal University, and a guest research scientist at Beijing Meteorological Bureau. He currently serves as national director for the American Society for Photogrammetric and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) and is an associate editor of ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetric and Remote Sensing.

Complex Subject, Well-Written

I bought this book as an alternative to the usual book that had been selected for the graduate-level remote sensing class. My understanding is that this book was written more for undergraduate level. Since I am new to my graduate program -- and therefore not yet used to reading for graduate classes -- I figured this book would explain the same concepts I need to know more succinctly than normal textbook assigned for my class. I have found this book to achieve this aim I just explained. It very well-written, the tables/charts are adequate. The only criticism I have of it is that it could explain just briefly more about some concepts that are more complex -- without it turning into a graduate-level textbook, of course. However, coupled with other class materials, it pairs very well in order to achieve an adequate level of understanding of most of the concepts involved with remote sensing.

Great Resource for Remote Sensing

I also have "Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation 2d ed" by Thomas Lillesand and I am reading both for a Remote Sensing course. This book is smaller, which means it is easier to take with me on trips. For example, during my first week of online courses I took a trip to Hawaii and this book fit better in my travel luggage. Aside from that, I feel like the author presents concepts in a more straight forward manner than the author of the other book. Weng's writing style makes more sense to me and he is able to still get the core information across using less words because he writes in a more direct, easy to understand manner. I feel like I am getting more from him and understand remote sensing better than I do with the other book. Also, this book is about half the cost of other Remote Sensing books on Amazon, which is a total plus!

Anyway, if you are given the choice (as I was) between this book and "Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation 2d ed" by Thomas Lillesand for the same Remote Sensing class, I think you'll find that this book get's the job done better, is easier to take with you when you travel and it is significantly cheaper.

This book, combined with "Environmental Sensing" by James K. Lein, can be a deadly combination for helping students receive the best information about the class in a different context. However, while campbell's or any other remote sensing may replace this book because of a more in-depth look into the hows, whys, and whats of remote sensing, this book goes into general concepts of it and pairing it with any book where those ones are either (A) missing critical concepts, (B) Are a big book and finding information becomes time consuming, and (C) the concepts are written very poorly, unclear, or the books include review questions that are near impossible to solve. Some books, like "Environmental Sensing", don't include a glossary of terms or review questions. That is where this text comes in and I'm glad to have that and "Environmental Sensing".

The BEST obstetrical book EVER!

I used this book in the 1990's during nurse midwifery school and it was my favorite text. As an author and professor, I could no longer use the book as it had not been republished for some time. I was beyond thrilled when I saw it was updated. I was not disappointed! This is what I personally consider the "Bible of Obstetrics". It is concise, extremely readable, and includes crucial content without erroneous information and fluff. The new colored drawings are beautiful and the content is well laid out. They include statistical information and precise headings that make looking up content fast and easy. I have an extensive library of obstetrical textbooks and need to purchase the most current versions for textbook writing purposes; however, this is really the ONLY book you need. I often give students a short list of books I would take if I was on a deserted island and needed references to look up information. This is #1 on my list! Great revision!!

Packed full of easy to read information

This book is a great supplement to Varney's. Oxorn-Foote has great, easily legible, full-color illustrations (though I do question proportions in them sometimes) of many obstetric variations and complications. The layout of the book, with bold heading graphics and colored margin tabs, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I also enjoy the writing style. To wit, this on shoulder dystocia:

"Usually equanimity forsakes the attendants. They push, they pull. Alarm increases. Eventually by greater strength of muscle or by some infernal juggle the difficulty appears to be overcome, and the shoulders and trunk of a goodly child are delivered."

My only beef with the book is that it is very much old-school OB about presenting all graphics as if the woman is in lithotomy. If you want to visualize side-lying or hands and knees though, just flip the book around. Oh, and it doesn't mention the Gaskin maneuver by name, merely calling it "all fours."

I'm a doula and pre-nursing student, and as I attend births I often leave with questions. I got an inexpensive used copy of this book as a way to become more familiar with the medical side of labor and birth, and it more than does the job. It's overkill for someone in my position, and yet absolutely fascinating and informative. In depth anatomy, physiology and practical medical information about labor and birth is presented in a concise, understandable, and thoroughly illustrated format.

I don't expect to ever read it straight through (unless it is required reading in school somewhere down the line) and the practical advice isn't anything I am in the position to use, but it's an interesting addition to my reference bookshelf as I try to sort out and understand for myself the medical side of what I see/hear at births.

Finally, a JavaScript book I can actually use

I'm not sure how good the older versions of the JavaScript Complete Reference with their orange and black covers were, but this new Third Edition with its blue cover has so far proven to be the most usable and helpful JavaScript book I've found. And I've tried several.

What enables this Third Edition to work so well for me is that it contains links to downloadable examples that (a) actually work, and (b) do things one might actually want to do.

More specifically, the book's examples of working with HTML pages' DOMs (Chapter 10, especially) were the first such examples I encountered that I could actually make sense of and make use of. Stated another way, I've had all I want to have of books that use wholly theoretical, non-working "examples" to illustrate key concepts, DOM or otherwise.

One important contributor to this book's usefulness and helpfulness was its technical editor. The book's technical narrative stays on track, doesn't cloud the discussion with useless hypothetical digressions, and always ties theory to real, working JavaScript examples that enable the reader to learn something both useful and interesting.

Long story short, using Firefox's Firebug and Web Developer add-ons, I was able to learn more about actually using JavaScript from this book than from several other JavaScript books combined. The book's working examples provided me with baseline bodies of useful (key word, that) JavaScript code that I could then expand to develop my JavaScript skills and accomplish something I actually wanted to use JavaScript to do.

EDIT / ADDENDUM:
In the time since I wrote my original review, I've worked on and off with various aspects JavaScript. As I did, JavaScript: The Complete Reference, 3rd edition continued to be a great learning and reference resource.

Never has it been more useful than when I recently expanded my JavaScript knowledge by learning AJAX. As was the case with my initial review, the book provides clearly written and useful examples. The book's only omission is that it falls upon the reader to figure out how to set up some sort of test Web server necessary to process HTTP requests. (I suggest taking a look at apachefriend.org's XAMPP or Node.js.)

My point is that the book has proven to be better at explaining AJAX than were a couple of books that had the word AJAX, and even the phrase "beginning AJAX" in the title. So my initial satisfaction with this book continues unabated...

This is great

I have not finished the book; but am well enough along (2/3) to have a valid opinion. My opinion is that Powell and Schneider take a difficult subject and make it understandable. The writing style flows smoothly and difficult points become palatable. Specifically, I believe I now have a working understanding of closures.

Good overview and lots of examples to try.

I received this book via the MN SQL Server user group ([...]). Being an advanced SQL Server developer, I read this book with the mindset that I can always learn something new with the features of SQL Server. I thought this book had some refreshing queries/tips and functions that I don't use every day. I particular liked the approach the author took in explaining the concepts clearly. The way he divided every function/feature with the following sections: definition, syntax, result and analysis really helped in cutting the chase. I am one of those who learn "by doing" and this book was all that. This was also a good reference for me to go back and see what will be the result if I rewrite one of my queries the way Art suggests. I liked the simple approach he took and how practical he made the book with so many examples to get your hands wet.

Overall a good read, I definitely recommend this for both new and some advanced readers.

Not for experienced SQL programmers

The description says "400+ ready-to-use, powerful SQL queries". More than 400? Yes. Powerful? No, unless you've never used any SQL at all. If you're already using SQL queries and have any SQL reference, I recommend you save your money. As a moderately experienced, but only occasional SQL developer, I was hoping for a good reference of queries that address issues that are common in the real world and require more than a basic knowledge of T-SQL. The queries in this book are just too simplistic to be called powerful and that "deliver actionable business intelligence." It takes 200 pages before the topic of "Subqueries" is addressed (in Chapter 10!) and there are only 8 pages on the topic. There are some useful examples in this book, but just not what I was looking for.
