Great, but could be better

This books is perfect if you want to review the material or have a hefty amount of practice multiple choice questions. It worked great for that part of the test. However, if you are like me and it is the free response questions you are worried about, prepare to not receive much help from this test book. While all the practice tests come with well written free response questions, the scoring guidelines are horrible. They basically say "1 point if you got it right" and don't explain what exactly what was needed to receive that one point or give you a sample response and you are left to grade yourself. Simply reviewing the released FRQ topics on the College Board website might be a enough though.

I got a 5 on the exam

Last year I had a pretty terrible teacher for AP US Government, so I bought this book about a week before the exam. I went through all of the review chapters and highlighted them, did all of the practice exams, and made some flash cards for the vocabulary I didn't know (there was a sad amount that I didn't know), all in the week before the test. When I went in to take it, I found that I knew the vast majority of the material. This book is not the best for practice FRQ's, but it does provide you with the information you need to do well on the FRQ's. I received a 5 on the exam. I definitely recommend this book.

This book is really helpful, and really easy to understand. It is a really fast read and speaks in words that are easy to understand. With it, my AP Government class is alot easier and more understandable. It gives you all the things you need to know to pass the test.

You proably don't need to but this book

I am new to the PICAXE so I was looking for all the information I could find. The [...] website has quite a bit but I felt like I needed more. I saw the book advertised with glowing reviews and ordered a copy at once. When the book came, I had gotten pretty familiar with the information on the web site and was looking for something more in depth. After looking at the book for quite some time, I still haven't found anything of use that can't be gotten from the web site. Actually, whenever I need information, I go to the web site instead of loking at the book. The picaxe user forum is also helpful. There may soon be other books on the PICAXE and I hope the authors do a better job than was done here.

Hmmmm...not sure about this book!

I got worried when the FIRST thing I looked up in the index of this book was BASIC - no mention of the language! The SECOND thing I looked for was a BASIC command reference - not there!!! (So I guess this means I'm going to have to print out the 178 pages of the PDF file on my printer and try to get them bound.)

I'm really not joking when I say that the next thing I looked up was the pinouts for the PICAXE-18X. I wanted to know where the SCL and SCA pins were on an 18X chip. No mention of either in the index so I decided to look up the pinouts for the chip. I found the chip listed on page 335 but unfortunately it was wrong - the chip shown in Figure A-16 was actually a 24-pin chip and bore no relation to the one I was looking for.

These comments are made after just about 10 minutes of owning the book so I'm worried about what I'm going to find next!

My advice is buy with caution. Try to get to see the book before you pay for it and then decide. I'm sure there's lots of things people will find useful contained within this volume but in my own case it as failed me so far.

EXTRA NOTES
Now that I have had a chance to get to grips with the book I can see that it does have its uses. I think the problem is that it is not for the beginner but it's useful if you can get over the initial step of learning the BASIC commands. Having said that a lot of time is dedicated to some very basic circuits - space which would have been better used for that command reference I wanted at the beginning. In the end I did print it out from the PDF file!

There are quite a few mistakes in the book so be prepared for that but if you're into PICAXE then this is a book you should get.

Picaxe

As a fan of David's earlier Picaxe booklets, I see his new book as being a great aid when wrestling with applications for these dirt cheap microcontroller darlings. The book works at many levels, since with beginner, intermediate, & experienced sections it should appeal to schools as well as being a good reference for old hands, hobbyists and -gasp- even engineers.

Wearing my photo journalist's hat & given the A1 technology now available, at least a few PICTURES would have been appreciated, since layout circuits are just simple line drawings akin to those in his earlier "Mechatronics" booklets. Perhaps things more in the style of the Rev.Ed .pdfs would have better caught the eye? This is naturally both an initial marketing AND educational end user issue- kids steaming in classrooms during Australian heatwaves need stimulating.

I'd personally have whipped up a bit of early can do enthusiasm as well (photos of pre teens robots, "girls can do anything" smart traffic lights,old codgers with balloon wireless weather telemetry etc -all with "it works" smiles), but then that's -ahem- my own style!

Since many texts now come with a back cover CD, or are perhaps web linked for copy & paste downloads, users will be faced with -argh!- raw code entry as neither are included. Although of course this will be educational,longer programs (such as David's great phone exchange) really need more productive linking, as typos will surely otherwise arise. I well recall pages of games code listings in early 1980s computer mags (VIC-20, Spectrum etc)that lead to keyboard angst & weary eyes...

All up I'd say every electronics class, school and library should have a copy. Perhaps the biggest compliment I can make is that this book is one I should have perhaps rustled up myself!

About the Author

Michael Jay Geier has been an electronics technician, designer and inventor since age 6. He took apart everything he could get his hands on, and soon discovered that learning to put it back together was even more fun. By age 8, he operated a neighborhood electronics repair service that was profiled in The Miami News. He went on to work in numerous service centers in Miami, Boston and Seattle, frequently serving as the “tough dog” tech who solved the cases other techs couldn’t. At the same time, Michael was a pioneer in the field of augmentative communications systems, helping a noted Boston clinic develop computer speech systems for children with cerebral palsy. He also invented and sold an amateur radio device while writing and marketing software in the early years of personal computing.

Michael holds an FCC Extra-class amateur radio license. His involvement in ham radio led to his writing career, first with articles for ham radio magazines, and then with general technology features in Electronic Engineering Times, Desktop Engineering, IEEE Spectrum, and The Envisioneering Newsletter. His work on digital rights management has been cited in several patents. Michael earned a Boston Conservatory of Music degree in composition, was trained as a conductor, and is an accomplished classical, jazz and pop pianist, and a published songwriter. Along with building and repairing electronic circuitry, he enjoys table tennis, restoring antique mopeds, ice skating, bicycling, and banging out a jazz tune on his harpsichord.

I finally get it...

This is, hands down, the best book I have ever read on understanding electronics. I've had college and post-graduate courses that taught me how to analyze circuits and figure out what voltages, currents, resistances, etc. were at certain points. That was all well and good, but totally useless for anything that I wanted to do on my work bench.

In reality, what I needed was a holistic approach that narrated the circuit and the signals that are manipulated. I NEVER thought of circuits this way and the author was able to explain that the active elements are the players in the story and everything else is a supporting cast.

I could read a schematic, but I couldn't understand why the components were there. I know that a capacitor doesn't pass DC, but now I see that when placed in the circuit, it acts as a DC filter to remove noise before passing a signal to the next stage.

On top of all that, I realized that every circuit has a voltage that is used as a signal. Signal analysis, analog and digital, seemed like a very advanced topic that I only understood through major concepts (linearity, aliasing, etc). Now I realize that a battery and a light bulb has a signal just as a digital video camera does. One is just more complex.

Bottom line, this is the book that I couldn't put down...and it is about some of the driest material you can find. It is written in a fun and enjoyable fashion. Every page had an "AH HA!" moment and I am much more confident in my electronics hobby and profession.

I cannot recommend this book enough and I would pay triple just for the section where the author walks through a couple sample circuits, describes each component's function, and what would happen if that component failed.

Don't judge a book by its title

It won't tell you how to diagnose and fix everything electronic

I'm an engineer by training, and I tend to take words literally. So when I read the title of this book, then observed that rather than an encyclopedia volume 1, these 316 pages were the entire book, I was dubious, and doubly so when I read the back cover where it promises "Master the Art of Electronics Repair," and how to repair and extend the life of "all kinds" of solid-state devices. I have read electronics books for a few decades. When I noted the publisher, Tab, I said to myself, "uh-huh". Because if there are a few things I have learned about Tab Books in particular in my years of reading them, it is these:

1. They tend to over-sell their books in the title and abstract for the book
2. If the book features projects, the circuits are often not tested and sometimes can't work as presented
3. Except for the cover, the production quality is often substandard compared to other publishers

If I was the author of the book, I would not be comfortable writing a book that promised to teach you how to fix everything electronic and to make you a master in 316 pages, because it CAN'T BE DONE.

I wondered when I saw a picture on the cover of a computer hard drive with a magnification of the electronics, because when a hard drive fails, I think it's best to do your best to recover data from it, then you move to a new one that is less likely to fail again. But the author does have a technique he says may be able to save a failing drive. Hey, if it works, I'd still use it as a rescue for data from the failed drive... then I'd wipe it and throw it away.

But I'm NOT here to tell you the book is worthless, or that the author does not know what he is talking about. Neither is true.

The author clearly knows what he is talking about and speaks from experience. He does tell you about the essential tools of the trade - and other tools which you have heard of but may not be necessary except for specialized jobs. He goes into some detail on using them. I came to this book to learn more about oscilloscopes, and he does a reasonable job with them - 28 pages, almost 10% of the book!

Around 50 pages in, he gets into some basic trouble-shooting techniques, followed by diving into a couple of case studies that expose the reader to the process he follows, which is very much like a detective's work. There are no short-cuts: you have to understand the circuit so that you can trace it for clues, and from the clues you have to be able to think to figure it out. It's challenging work.

Obviously, it is useful to have a background in electronics. If you don't have that, he has a couple of chapters on components and circuits. It's brief; fortunately, there are lots of books dedicated to these subjects to learn a lot more, especially on subjects that apply to the kind of equipment you want to fix.

Chapter 14, at just over 50 pages, is tips and tricks for fixing specific products and technologies: switching power supplies (used in many products, and frequently a source of failure), audio amps and receivers, disc players and recorders, flat panel displays, hard drives, laptop computers, mp3 players, vcrs and camcorders, and video projectors. The problem is, that's just a few pages for each topic, and you could devote an entire book to each topic and not cover everything. This should be the meat of the book, but it's like the author ran out of time when he got here.

The topics in Chapter 14 should have been at least a 50 page chapter each to earn the book's ambitious title. Better still would be to omit Chapter 14 from this volume, then use this volume as the introduction to a series, and write a separate book on each of the topics of Chapter 14 and beyond. Do that, Tab, and I'll consider buying the set.

This book would have come closer to succeeding just by having a title like "using test equipment to diagnose common problems in consumer electronics," which is closer to what it covers: there are about as many pages discussing test equipment as there are on general diagnosis techniques and tips and techniques that apply to specific types of equipment. The author probably had a different title in mind, but Tab had an outdated book they wanted to update that had a similar title, so maybe they talked the author into a more ambitious title so it would sell better. Or at least, that's my theory.

BOTTOM LINE

Three stars ("It's OK") is not a bad review, but there is room for improvement. There are definitely parts that are useful to me. As it is, it will not tell you everything you know to fix everything electronic, or even close, but it may start you down that path. It is a good beginner's book.

I really can learn to use an oscilloscope!

This book is extremely well written, easy to follow and makes sense. The author actually "takes you by the hand" and leads you through simple test procedures, step by step and explains why things are being done.

If you are a beginner to electronics or even past the beginner stage and want to go beyond just opening up something that doesn't work, looking for loose connections and burned components, this will be just what the doctor ordered.

The writing is top notch and done in such a manner that it's truly enjoyable.

It's been a long time since I've picked up a book written to actually be read and used.

A big thanks to Michael Geier for getting me back into troubleshooting and setting up a small repair area.

Best of several not great books for Step 3

Lots of people suggest using Crush Step 3, but I looked at it, felt it was a) too thick and b) the questions and topics were not that relevant to the actual exam (especially in retrospect).

First Aid step 3 continues the long tradition of First Aid books for the USMLE's. But let's face it, you need the books less and less, and they put less and less into them for each one. The best one is/was for Step 1. Step 2 book was useful. Step 3 book is somewhat useful. (Having said that, it was the only book I studied from, to the extent that I studied, and I got over 240...).

The book has an above average number of typos and appears to have been rushed out.

The highlight is the 100 mini cases that have differentials and lab tests that are useful for the CCS cases.

But overall, I think it is the best review book for step 3. Not too much extraneous information, no fake questions that are either too easy or too hard. Just a lot of good info. Some of it is, however, utterly and completely irrelevant to the exam. And they could have spent more time reviewing outpatient material such as derm, emergency room, and less about inpatient medicine, almost everybody who takes step 3 does not need a review of inpatient anything after internship :)

Just finished taking step 3...I highly recommend First Aid, it is concise and, most importantly, the information in the text is relevant to the actual exam. It is easy to get through and I actually learned quite a bit reading it. Lastly, the description and tips it provides for the new interactive section of step 3 was invaluable, trust me.

Needs more organization and material

The problem I had with this book was that there were MAJOR missing topics such as:

1. appendicitis (???!!)
2. small/large bowel obstruction
3. rheumatic fever
4. pediatric rashes - NO mention of measles, mumps, rubella except how they affect the neonate. I'm looking more for what the different rashes in a kid look like and their accompanying sxs
5. spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
6. aortic aneurysm (!!!)
7. contraindications for vaccines
8. skimped on a lot of cardiac medication side effects - no mention of dig or amiodarone or lidocaine toxicity
9. delayed puberty
10. botulinism
11. diaper rash (seriously, this is def. asked in step 3)
12. discusses gastroschisis but not omphalocele??

you get the idea.

Their biostatistic section was a nightmare - poorly organised and lacking basic information - such as defining different types of experimental study biases and including poorly worded explanations instead of just giving us an example like they did in step 2 First Aid. The cardiology section LUMPED stable, unstable angina and MI into one single-paged mess.....I don't know about you, but more clarification about who goes and gets cathed and what the indications for angioplasty, PCI are would have been nice.

And WAY too much emphasis on: ortho (2-3 pages of chart/table devoted to ortho injuries???)

CSS section probably fine if you use it - I didn't use it at all. I just used USMLE world's CSS cases and those were more than sufficient and inclusive.

Unfortunately, this is probably still the best review book out there for step 3, if nothing else than for the familiar format.

Richard C. Freed is a professor in Iowa State University's Program in Rhetoric and Professional Communication. His Variables of Composition was named by the National Council of Teachers of English as the best scholarly book on professional communication. A consultant to major international consultancies, he has taught his proposal-writing program, based on the methodology in Writing Winning Business Proposals, in 27 countries on five continents.

Shervin Freed and Joe Romano are both former Vice Presidents at A.T. Kearney, where Romano was in charge of worldwide professional development. He now teaches math and science to middle-school children in Cleveland.

Since my book is mentioned in a couple of these reviews, I thought I would respond.
I used Rich Freed's book for years in my consulting practice and MBA classes. It's a great book, and I *highly* recommend it. It's clearly one of the best treatments on writing business proposals available.
But comparing my book on proposals to Freed's is like comparing apples and oranges. My book is aimed at people who work in scientific and technical disciplines. Freed's book is written toward business applications. These two books are designed to work in two completely different arenas.
Buy this book. As an experienced proposal writer and consultant, I believe it's the best book on writing business proposals. It's truly innovative, and it offers wonderful strategies for winning contracts in highly competitive business environments.

Decent & Recommended Book

The book takes you through a step-by-step methodology for creating a business proposal. It focuses on meeting the clients needs to create a winning proposal. It lacks a convincing example that could go with the current market requirements.The templates for creating the proposal are a good help and I would recommend this book to new and seasoned proposal writers.

Best Business Book I've Read

This is an outstanding instructional on how to create effective communications, particularly with clients/customers. It is aimed at consultants, but really applies to communications broadly--whether you're presenting a proposal to a prospective client, or trying to convince your boss to give you a raise.
It takes the essence of Barbara Minto's "pyramid principle" of organization and adds to it audience evaluations, audience perspectives, and general guidance on how to make your communication well-received. It highlights common assumptions and errors on the part of any author, and truly makes a writer put him/herself in the shoes of the audience.
It's an easy read at a bargain price, and I've recommended it to everyone with whom I work. Well worth the price!

False information!!

False information given for this book. This book does NOT contain ALABAMA!!!! Do not order if you expect to use this to study for Alabama. Also, the book falls apart after opening several times. Good luck trying to return the book and trying to explain to Amazon ALABAMA is NOT in the review book!!! The book and Amazon are both disappointments!

Federal review ok. But too expensive.

The federal part seemed ok but was short. I would not pay the money they were asking for the other states I wool find a cheaper guide for your specific state. They will usually have the federal included.

Dr. Kent Van De Graaff is a well-known and highly respected author. For McGraw-Hill, he has written the best selling human anatomy text and a top human A&P text. He received his Ph.D. from Northern Arizona University.
R. Ward Rhees is a Professor of Zoology at Brigham Young University. He received his B.S. (1967) in Pharmacy at the University of Utah and his Ph.D. (1971) in Physiology at Colorado State University. He taught at Weber State College and has been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Anatomy and the Brian Research Institute at the UCLA School of Medicine. His research on sexual differentiation of the brain has been published in numerous leading scholarly journals and presented at national and international conferences.

Dhananjay V. Gadre is an assistant professor with the Electronics and Communication Engineering Division at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He is associated with the global Fablab network and is a faculty member at the Fab Academy. Gadre is the author of several professional articles and three books.

Nehul Malhotra is a final-year undergraduate student in the Division of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He is also the CEO of the startup LearnMicros.

Kindle Version Unusable

Very disappointed in this book on the Kindle, primarily because the content is quite good for a beginner if you already have a bit of background, but the formatting issues with the kindle version are really inexcusable.

All the code examples have no line breaks, which alone is enough to make it unusable but the worst problem is that some key code symbols don't render at all so its not just hard to read, it's completely wrong, and in significant ways. Here's an example:
