He retired from the Xerox Corporation after 30 years of service creating and pioneering numerous organization effectiveness interventions from the executive v.p. level down to first-level managers. He is an expert in organizational behavior and change, group facilitation, team-building design & facilitation, and executive coaching.

Besides authoring the books Building Team Power and Mining Group Gold, he coauthored Changing Organizational Behavior.  Tom is a speaker and the author of articles that have appeared in The California Management Review, Michigan Business Review, Community Banker, LeadershipExcellence, and Leader to Leader.

Get the Most from Your Team - Get the Most from Your Meetings

Repetitive, non-productive meetings. Preaching meetings. Time wasting meetings. I know you've been there, just as I'd been there over many years. This book changed all that forever, for me as well as for my organization.

Mr. Kayser lays out an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand and, best of all, easy to implement format for the reader to put into practice and turn her or his meetings into fruitful sessions of information sharing, of discussion whenever appropriate, of meaningful idea sharing and of satisfying accomplishment. Best of all, it works - in any "meeting", no matter the size, and no matter if it's business, if it's communuity, or if it's personal.

Some time ago, I read "Mining Group Gold". Skeptical at first, I was nonetheless intrigued by Mr. Kayser's processes that claim to turn meetings that are so often sessions of "reading the mail" or "preaching" into sessions of valuable insight instead. I, along with another individual, had a meeting with 60 people scheduled within a week after I completed the book. With this other individual, I dicussed a new approach - the MGG approach - to our meeting. It was a whiole new world for us, and we weren't entirely confident, but Mr. Kayser encourages the reader to just try the processes explained in the book. He advises that the 1st time may not be smooth & perfect, but it will be better than he would have otherwise had. So we literally ripped up the "agenda" we had, and started new, using templates and principles from "Mining Group Gold". The impact was powerful. During wrap up, meeting participants over & over exclaimed that they'd never been in such a productive meeting, or they never thought we would accomplish what we stated as our "desred outcome" at the start of the meeting, or that "it was the best meeting ever attended".

Read the book and benefit from Mr. Kayser's wealth of experience. Learn how to decide if you even need a meeting. Learn how to get the most "gold nuggets" out of the meeting participants - the willing as well as the not-so-willing. Learn how to assure "buy-in" to your group's ideas and plans of action.

Timeless and always relevant information

I have been in several leadership roles throughout the years, and never have I come across something as simple and effective as Mining Group Gold. So many organizations struggle and even fail because they are made up of a group of people acting as individuals - not as a team.

One of the biggest frustrations I have come across in my career is ineffective meetings. We have meetings to plan meetings, meetings to re-cap meetings, and meetings just for the sake of meeting. It can be very easy to overlook the amount of time and money that is wasted on meetings that either never needed to happen or should have been conducted in an entirely different manner. Kayser lays out six critical questions to ask yourself when planning for a group meeting, and I have found that by going through this exercise I have saved significant time and money, as well as learned how to more effectively communicate with my team.

I feel that by reading this book, I am now a much better leader and have a better relationship with my staff. Everyone on my team knows that their opinion counts, and I am better able to assess the strengths of my team members and assign them tasks appropriately. No matter what stage you are in your career, Mining Group Gold will make you a better teammate, leader, and organization as a whole.

What an outstanding update to one of the most effective books I have ever read and used in my 35 years in the business world. I found this book about five years ago. I work in a large corporate environment, and for many years I attended meetings that were not very effective and therefore, without much meaning. It was very seldom that we ever had a meeting that did much more than set a date for the next meeting. Since I started using the Mining Group Gold format, we have accomplished so much more, in much less time than I thought was possible. Not only have I made this format part of two very successful divisions I have been blessed to champion, but it has now been rolled out through-out the organization. For anyone who has struggled having an effective meeting at any company level, I strongly recommend Mining Group Gold. It has been extremely effective in helping align our entire company.

About the Author

John Wooden (1910-2010), guided the UCLA Bruins to ten NCAA basketball championships over a 12-year period, including four perfect seasons and an 88-game winning streak. He was named ESPN’s “Greatest Coach of the 20th Century” and voted “#1 Coach of All Time” by The Sporting News. Sports Illustrated said it best when they said: “There’s never been a finer man in American sports than John Wooden, or a finer coach.” In 2003 John Wooden was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Steve Jamison is America's foremost author and authority on the life and philosophy of John Wooden. Mr. Jamison is a consultant to the UCLA Anderson Scool of Business’ John Wooden Global Leadership Program. He has collaborated with Coach Wooden on an award-winning PBS presentation as well as several books, including the classic book on teaching and mentoring, Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections.

"Make each day your masterpiece."

John Wooden and Steve Jamison have produced a final gift of excellence from one of America's greatest teachers. The mythical basketball coach whose name was synonymous with excellence lived his life by a simple yet profound mantra from his father, Joshua: "Make each day your masterpiece." This book is a testament to the core values handed down from Coach Wooden's father and shared with his own children and hundreds of student-athletes.

Unique Look and Feel

The book is constructed in the shape of an old-fashioned family photo album. The distinctive rectangular dimensions were a good choice for an equally unique man. I liked the compelling contrast between the cover image of Coach Wooden with a basketball and quotes from two of his prized pupils, Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on the back. There are no page numbers to further reinforce the photo album ambiance, and the predominant font size is larger than usual. Key quotes were shown in a maroon hue. Perhaps as a reminder that Mr. Wooden was a former English teacher.

Vivid Pictures Paint a Life Story

I grew up watching the fabled UCLA Bruins from afar on television. Flipping through the pages brought back wonderful childhood memories of the impeccably-dressed coach with his precise teams that performed like a Swiss watch. Coach Wooden and Mr. Jamison provide the reader with a wide variety of images. From his early days of coaching, to pictures of his extended family, to handwritten diagrams of plays, to the many highs and extremely rare lows, the life of John Wooden is documented in significant detail. My favorite image was Coach Wooden and Kareem-Abdul Jabbar holding hands as the former student assists his teacher walk on the court.

A how-to guide for living an extraordinary life

This charming book celebrates the extraordinary life of coach John Wooden and shares the principles that guided him throughout his career. Contents include the 7 point creed and the two sets of threes from Wooden's father, Wooden's own Pyramid of Success, the Pyramid of Success modified for children, and his Sportsmanship pledge for youngsters. You don't have to be a sports fan to benefit from the collected wisdom and quotes in here. His words are simple, powerful, and sane. Buy this book and read it together with your children, your parents, or your grandparents.

Many Quotes to Record and Remember

Like everything I have read about or by John Wooden, this book left me with a feeling of great respect for him, not only as a coach, but as a human. I collect quotes, and I recorded several new ones from this book. The Wisdom of Wooden does a particularly good job of drawing in the reader through beautiful photos and a conversational tone, so that it feels she/he is having a personal dialogue with Coach Wooden. It is a quick and easy read and would make a great conversation starter as a coffee table book. The Wisdom of Wooden would be an excellent gift for a graduate or someone starting a new job, as well as for sports fans and quote collectors.

So-so

I've never found a grammar book that I like to teach with in over 20 plus years of homeschooling. Easy Grammar started with prepositions. This starts with sentences. I'm not sure how a child can tell what the complete subject or complete predicate is with no mention of nouns or verbs. At first I assumed the child was supposed to already have this knowledge, but on further inspection I found that identifying nouns and verbs is in the next section. Still, this book is working for us. I just wouldn't tell anyone, "this is the book to use for grammar" like I would say "Saxon is the best math program".

Great Resource

I am an 8th grade English teacher who has always struggled to adequately infuse the parts of speech and usage into my instruction. This book is organized in a way that one can create mini units on the parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization. Also, each exercise has a "trivia" question that motivates kids to answer all of the questions to find the answer. I would have given the book 5 stars if the reading passages were longer. I was hoping to use this to help with reading and grammar. However, since the book is called Mastering Grammar, my expectations may have been unrealistic. Overall, a great resource that is clearly organized in a way that a teacher could use it on arrival.

which is a disappointment as it was prefaced on being unbiased

2 stars for the information provided. The newer version has a bit more info due to being 3 years after the first release. However, it is very biased, despite the author claiming to have no bias. This is very troubling as to why it was prefaced on the context as to being non-biased. It somehow excuses armed terrorism by the Palesinian people, while condemning Israel for defending itself. This is a repeated theme over the course of the book, which only seeks to distance the 2 sides rather than try to come to any peaceful understanding. So obviously, there is bias shown, which is a disappointment as it was prefaced on being unbiased. 2 stars for at least providing a thorough history on the region.

The most practical Objective C book

The most applicable and practical Objective C book out there for the beginner who just wants to develope .It comes with very good examples , particularly the chapters of design patterns,UML ,delegation ,wrapping etc..Author's site is very helpful and there is an i pad app with all the examples in the book on video .Good work .Kindle version sucks all code shows flat on the screen .The 5 stars go to the printed version and the good work Brannan has done with the videos on his site.

Mangled code formatting renders this useless

I can't give a true review of this book, because I can't read it. At least on the iPad Kindle reader, the code listing has lost all formatting - all example code is mushed into one block of text.
This makes it completely pointless.

okay but not fantastic

Despite the flaws in this book I haven't seen a better book for home buyers and owners. (Although it might not be obvious that is who this book is targetted at, not professional inspectors.) So if you are in the market for a house I would recommend you at least browse through this book.
The good parts are that the author lays out a methodical approach to inspecting a house and usually includes good descriptions of how to investigate and evaluate the various components and systems of the house. The end of most chapters contains a checkpoint summary of that chapter.
The downsides are that the information in the book is almost a decade old now; this second version was published in 1993. Sometimes the author assumes knowledge that I didn't have. The book is targetted at a lay audience but doesn't really have enough illustrations and definitions and examples to really deliver on this promise. For instance, when inspecting a hot-water heating system he says, "A forced system will have a circulating pump in the return line near the boiler." It would be nice a picture was shown to illustrate the difference between having a circulating pump and not having one.
Also, the author gets something wrong in at least one place. When talking about tankless water heaters he says, "From an energy-conservation point of view, a tankless water heater is not desirable. It is inefficient and wasteful of energy." This is untrue today and I doubt whether it was true when the book was written. The US Department of Energy in their reference brief on tankless heaters acknowledges that tankless heaters are more efficient and less wasteful of energy; that is part of the reason they are used in Europe and Japan where energy prices are higher than here in America. They also tend to have longer life expectancies than conventional tank heaters.
I find the author's statements strange because they make little sense. It also makes me a little worried because now I wonder what else he got wrong that I don't know about. Despite this, I still think the book is very useful to potential home buyers.

Superbly written and an informative companion.

This book covers all the major components of home inspection. It is not so obvious by its content that it is intended primarily for the home buyer. I definitely recommend it to home inspectors as it is as good a reference as any of the books written for home inspectors. There are a lot of first-hand cases experienced by the author in lower New York that will give helpful inspection clues to buyers/inspectors. Unfortunately I do not consider the book the "bible" of home inspection. I have not yet come across such a book.. when I do I'll be sure to let you know (in its own review).

S. Levy's PM In Construction (6th Edition)

As a consulting architect, I found this book a terrific addition to my technical library.
You would have a long search to find a book on this subject with better elements of sequencing, logical arrangement and text. The author presents his material in the same manner in which a structure is designed and constructed. This avoids the need to refer to crossinformation among several sections as you read, and guides the reader easily through the concerns applicable to each heading and the standards that apply. Although seemingly aimed as a comprehensive reference instrument at the hands-on project manager the book, therefore, is excellent as a teaching tool for anyone in the industry, from owners to superintendents. The summations at the end of certain chapters are particularly useful, as are the sample documents shown or cited for each section.
Also of particular interest for this edition is the material in Chapter 4, presenting the Consensus Docs and Lean Construction. Here again the author's direct, conversational style puts the reasons for, and the preparation of, this new family of documents in a way that goes beyond merely listing regulations to follow.
To reflect the present economy and realities of vacancies I would have liked to find a section dedicated to restoration and upgrading of existing structures. I retired as an architect after 54 years in construction, and found that these always presented special challenges requiring adaptation of what applies more readily to new construction.
Years ago I read Sid Levy's book on Japanese construction, and kept a copy of his Superintendent's Handbook in our field office. I hope he dedicates his next book to expanding his chapters 16 and 17, dealing with the cutting-edge culture and technology of green buildings and BIM.

Get it cuz you have to not cuz you want to.

There are many typos, and the author likes to throw out abbreviations and then explain what those abbreviations stand for in paragraphs to come leaving you flipping through previous pages to see if you missed something. They did a pretty bad job putting this book together. I'm half way through and while sure there's useful information it's not set up in a way that makes sense and is digestible.

Too big for a "pocket guide"

This is a good book. I love Dutton as he is detailed. I just think it's a little too big for a survival guide. Personally, I bring Michael Wong's pocket book and a FULL sized orthopedic book by Brotzman. Those two make a great 1-2 punch. When I brought this survival book to clinic, I always had to revert to Brotzman, or when I needed something real quick, I always used Wong's pocket book. Then eventually I realized I just needed the other two but not this one.

Great, concise, easy to navigate resource for the clinic

This book is a great, quick resource for the clinic. The kindle edition is easy to navigate with a comprehensive table of contents and search function. This makes it so easy to have with you on your tablet for patient education or to search for a topic while on the go. It is surprisingly comprehensive for a " survival guide". I could not be more pleased with this purchase!

Great for Students

This book is a great reference book for students. Small enough to carry around to clinical affiliations when you need info fast. It offers brief info on various ortho conditions with ther ex suggestions. It also has a differential diagnosis section for the ortho conditions, just in case any red flags appear. I highly recommend this to all PT students.
