The best intro to forensics book out there!

I was fortunate enough to get an advance reviewer copy of David Cowen's new book - Computer Forensics: A Beginner's Guide. After reading it, honestly, I was annoyed and a little bit pissed. I have a Masters in Information Security and it was my Computer Forensics class that got me interested in this field. By comparison the textbook I had for that class was dry, dull, stale and inadequate in its task compared to this book. What I would have given to have this as a reference for that class. Fortunately, now I do!

For those that are unfamiliar with the author; David has co-authored Hacking Exposed: Computer Forensics, writes a popular forensic blog ([...]) and is an experience Computer Forensic Examiner in the state of Texas.

What's to like about this book? To me, the biggest selling point of this book is how it reads. If you like the style of the Hacking Exposed books then you'll enjoy David's writing style as well. It comes mostly as a first person narrative with David's experiences sprinkled liberally throughout the book; and that's a good thing. It becomes very obvious in the reading that not only does the author know what he's talking about, he knows how to communicate it to a wide audience. I finished the entire book in three sittings and I attribute that to how well it is written.
The topics covered flow very well; starting with chapters on getting started, what can be done with computer forensics, how to get training and where to find current information. For the beginner, these chapters are invaluable as they lay the groundwork for the rest of the book as well as providing some great external references for finding more information about forensics. For the experienced forensicator, these chapters are valuable as a way to introduce new people to what you do as well as providing a great reference list of places to keep up-to-date on computer forensics.

From here the book quickly moves into setting up your own lab, what tools (both hardware and software) you'll need, and how to start your first investigation. There's a great chapter here on the importance of testing your tools and how to test them as well as several chapters on different types of forensic cases. The most valuable sections of the book, however, were the final two chapters on the back end of every investigation - documenting and reporting. Why? Because so much of the information in our field focuses on the technical aspects; new tools, new artifacts, new malware, etc., however, all of that is moot if it isn't properly documented and reported. David fortunately doesn't gloss over these topics, instead giving them two skillfully written chapters that will serve experienced and new forensicators well.

Without covering every chapter, I'll instead say that David does an outstanding job of covering a very broad level of topics in computer forensics, including many that you wouldn't expect to be in a book for beginners. And while the focus is on beginners, this book would make an excellent addition to any computer forensicator's library.
That said I did have a few minor quibbles with the book. There were a few minor spelling errors and some grammar issues but I expect all of those will be referenced on the accompanying website ([...]) and fixed in future versions. Another issue I had was that a few chapters' topic introductions did not match up to the chapter summaries. For example, Chapter 8 deals with creating forensic images. The topics listed as being covered do not mention mobile devices, yet it is discussed briefly in the chapter and then listed as a skilled learned in the chapter summary. In reality, the chapter mentions that the topic is rapidly changing and no methods for imaging mobile devices are documented. For a beginner it may be frustrating to see a skill listed as `covered' in the chapter when it was not. This happens a few times in the book but should not seriously detract from what I consider to overall be an outstanding computer forensics book.

In summary, if you have any interest in computer forensics, I highly recommend this book. If you're teaching a course on the topic, please do yourself and your students a favor and use this as your textbook. Your students will thank you!

Notes: My ARC was in .pdf form with no Table of Contents, Introduction or Index so I cannot speak to any issues in those areas of the book. I also cannot speak to any formatting issues that might exist with other e-versions of the book. There were none in my version but they do sometimes occur across different e-formats.

This book delivers!

Like the reviewer before me, I became interested in digital forensics after a course in my masters degree program. IMHO, this book lives up to its name. As an infosec pro trying to go the DFIR route, I found this work to have the perfect balance of technical detail, legal discussion, career tips, and real-world applicability. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am more inspired now than before. My only complaint is that the example images in the Kindle version were terrible. In retrospect, I should've purchased the paperback and will gladly shell out another $25 to get this on my bookshelf. Much respect and thanks to the author!

Excellent resource for anyone in the field of digital forensics!

This book is very well layed out giving new Digital Forensic Examiners a wealth of information all in one easy to read reference. I have only been in the field for a couple of years transitioning from a more traditional Information Security role and have found the information in this book to be the primary catalyst in my own growth and development.

The bottom line is this book allows the new Digital Forensic Examiner to benefit from the Author's years of hard work, knowledge, and experience saving A LOT of time, headaches, and allowing you hit the ground running in the right direction.

This resource is a must have for anyone in DFIR.

Good book on keeping your word

I read this book after picking it up at a garage sale a long time ago. It is an excellent book on the key things that sales people struggle with. How do I sell without lying? How do I keep integrity with what I say I will do when there are other factors out of my control? etc etc.

It has a couple key stories that really make it worthwhile to me....paying back your debts, allowing your integrity to sell your service/product, and in general focusing on how integrity can make things happen.

No question i found the book very insightful and reinforced things, that may be quaint, but are obviously hard to follow when you look around at your peers.

Catchy title, but not much else.

Not quite the interesting story I anticipated. I'm not sure the average person, workng their way up in the business world could prevail time and time again without the "something" behind them. It's m-o-n-e-y! There are "gaps" in the story which are a give away that there is much more than "integrity" that allowed the author to prevail.

This is a good book with great ideas. The author touches on most of the necessary attributes necessary for becoming a success both in business and in your life. I enjoyed the personal feel of the book as the author takes us through his personal life as opposed to preaching what to do and how to do it. Enjoyable read.

A "good" introduction to rudimentary classical Latin; an OK prerequisite

For the price of this product, I certainly cannot complain. It could appear to some to be overly trite or even dry, but it is actually a very good way to ease into the learning of basic Latin.

Perfect little course to learn Latin

I have been learning Latin on and off for a couple of years. I've used Wheelocks and the other most popular courses courses, but this course is the best thus far. It gives straight forward explanations about grammar and each chapter has a manageable list of vocabulary and idioms. The audio cd is helpful as well to help with Latin speech patterns. The stories could be better but they are somewhat amusing. Instead of spending big bucks on other courses, use this to start. Use the audio cd and make flashcards to memorize the new words. It was very helpful.

What about self-study???

I hope that Amazon or Mr. Meyers will edit the description of this book. There are "End of Chapter Quizzes." However, there are no End of Chapter ANSWERS. If you go to [...] looking for the answers you'll be redirected to a McGraw Hill site where you'll need to input your "Sales Rep???" I don't have a sales rep. I bought this book on Amazon.com. If you're a self-directed learner choose SYBEX because questions with no answers is like a car with no brakes.

No studying

Like Paul Lee stated, this book does not come with access to the answers at the end of each chapter, and Amazon has yet to make this known to potential buyers. Don't waste your money on this version unless what you're looking for is a replacement book, since this book is only meant for teachers and is supposed to be bought directly from the publisher, NOT a reseller like Amazon.

NOT that great!

To much unneeded info, I past the 220-701 and only read about 5 chapters and did the labsim test out software! I have had very littly desktop support in the past and I was able to pass the test after a one semester class. So I guess btwn the additional software and some of the book, it was good enough. I did take the Network+ at the same time and both classes over lapped a bit too, for what its worth.

Theory wrapped in reality

This is a very good book for those with some experience in project work. It is not entry level material, mainly because it makes important points with examples and without examples: only those who have some experience will have a "hook" to latch onto in order to relate to the latter. When examples are given they are succinct and easy to relate to.

The end of chapter tests reinforce the topics covered very well. There are times when an experienced project manager who is doing some "brushing up" with this book will not necessarily agree 100% with the required answers as given -- you know the sort of thing, when you have to choose from answer "a", "b", "c", or "d" and you want to choose "e"! Generally, however the authors show clearly that they have the relevant battle scars from actual projects (one seems to have more practical, hands on experience than the other).

I have 30+ years of project management experience behind me, with a few more ahead in my career. I found this book invaluable for brushing up my knowledge and for learning a few new ideas. Thank you Helen and Karen for sharing your comprehensive knowledge.

One peeve (otherwise it would have been 5 stars) - when I tried to do the final examination on line, as suggested, I could not find it anywhere on the web. I have completed the exam and sent off my answers by snail mail to the name and address given in the book. I await the response...

Good little book - but...

In today's modern environment, considering so many custom made and open source tools for managing projects, I could not find a decent scenario for managing a web project. Maybe not a dissertation, but at least overall pointers. It does the job in a more abstract way. It is a bit short on certain aspects and too crammed on others, but it does say : " 36 - Hour Course ". Overall McGraw-Hill is a reputable resource for education material that I personally prefer over others, in many cases.

Highly recommend

I recently transitioned out of the military into a corporate job and had no experience with P&L and no financial background but was expected to pick financial terms and concepts up right off the bat. I took an MBA course in finance and accounting to help me out but the information didn't really land as I had no business context with which to understand the information. This book really dumbed down a lot of the information and gave me exactly what I needed to understand the financial statements and budget issues within my company. I highly recommend!!!

This book is very useful and handy to have about, however it is now out of print and there is no substitution for it, according to the McGraw Hill rep that I spoke to today, so if you don't already have this book and want it, grab it quick, once it's gone, it's gone for good :(

Organized sections, Too Many Subsections

This AP review book for Environmental Science goes over most of the material that is covered on the AP Exam. However, there are a lot of subsections and it felt tiring to read in two sittings. If you read it in small chunks within a month before the AP Exam, hen it will be a great review book. If you're hoping to cram everything in a week or less, then I strongly discourage it.

Took a short cut, still got the five

This book teaches you everything you need to know to get a five. My chemistry teacher also taught AP Envi Sci. One day I told her that her class was a joke and long story short I ended up betting that I could pass the test without taking her class. This book is all that I read about a week before the test (they say to start studying in the month or two leading up to the test... Pffftttt) Anyway, I read through the book the week before and marked everything that I needed to focus on, then restudied those the night before the test. I went into the test and came out feeling like I knew the answer to about 75% of the questions for sure and about 5-6% of the questions I had no idea what they were talking about. For those unfamiliar with AP tests, you only need to get about 50-60% of the questions correct to get a 5. Anyway, come July, I got my score report and sure enough I got a 5.

Although it says not to read it all at once, if you have a good sense of humor, the book is filled with jokes that make it easier to sit down and mow through which is the problem I have run into with other books. Sure they are great, but I can only stand to read them in about 20 minute bursts.

Long story short, this book is all you need to ace this test if you are determined (even if you procrastinate) I can only imagine how easy this test would have been if I had taken the class in addition to studying this book.

Doesn't cover all material and goes way too specific in certain subjects

This book is much worse compared to other AP review books. It has 2 basically Mock AP exams (one diagnostic and one final result after studying all material) and they are nothing like the questions that really appear on the AP test. It is based on stupid specific information that this book mentions. The Barrons or Princeton addition are much more recommended. This book does not cover all the material and the book also gets very specific in certain topics that is not needed at all for the AP test, so basically it wastes your time by giving you information about information that is irrelevant and unneeded for the AP test. If this book was the only book I used to study for the AP test, I definitely would not be prepared. Once again I recommend Barrons or Princeton and then the additional purchase of a crash course for this subject, which doesn't go in detail on the subject but it is a small quick review of all the information.

A must buy for anyone in retail!

I work in retail and I deal with upset and stressed out customers on a nearly daily basis. This book is a lifesaver. It gives to the point advice about how to deal with a wide variety of possible problems that come up in customer interactions and help you take control over the situation. The title really doesn't do it justice. It doesn't speak to the breadth of information the book contains. I highly recommend it and for under $10 it will repay you in a less stressful work environment.

One of the biggest challenges for most employees who are working for someone else is that they do not know what to say when certain situations present themselves. Perfect Phrases for Customer Service

Bought this for my son-in-law when he started his new job. The book was excellent-- it brought up many situations that you hope never to encounter. My daughter who works with the public all the time enjoyed it also. What it does is prime your brain with some ideas on how to handle difficult situations, so that thinking on your feet is easier.

A struggle to get through

This book has been a struggle to read. It's not the material---the actual instruction is basic online marketing information that can be found online for free---it's the writing. For a book with the McGraw-Hill name attached to it, I expected better. I hate picking on authors; I know how much work it is to write a book. But in this case I wish a good editor had helped make the book more readable. As it is, the book is a great lesson in how NOT to write. It's full of cliches (e.g. There is no I in TEAM). Lots of exclamation points! And some downright confusing writing.

The book begins with three Online Marketing Rules. Rule #3 states "You have conquered all three rules by picking up this book. Don't let it go!" Huh? That's rule number three?

The author promises "36 action-packed hours that will lead you to web greatness." The rationalization for this is that the "Web phenomena Facebook started with only a few hours of very simple programming (honestly), and now has a valuation in the billions of dollars." Huh? Maybe I missed the point, but I seriously doubt Facebook is the result of "only a few hours of very simple programming."

In describing Chapter 8 the author says "Search Engine Optimization delves into SEO." Isn't this like saying "Search engine optimization delves into search engine optimization?" The author then says "You will also learn how social media (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc) can boost SEO for total web domination." I'm not sure "total web domination" fits with the authors' other remarks in the book about online marketing being primarily about creating valuable relationships, but it seems out of place. I also don't think it's true.

In describing Chapter 11 the author says "Online Public Relations will show how PR can be done in your pajamas." Really? Perhaps if you are out of work or a single practitioner working from home. But is that really the focus of this chapter? There are dozens of examples like this throughout the book of writing that seems like it was done hastily, with little editing, and by someone who doesn't inspire confidence in their basic marketing credentials.

I wanted to like this book and include it in my own ongoing marketing education (or as the author says, "claim your newfound web wisdom (or shall we say "webdom"?). I do embrace the role of online marketing in an overall integrated marketing strategy. But as a 30-year marketing veteran, I can't say I learned enough to justify the price of the book.

As the author (condescendingly) says, "Everyone under 50, and a lot of people over 50 (who are growing younger while living longer), realizes that the web is the key to immediate information and wish fulfillment. The number of people who use the Internet is staggering!" These are the author's words, not mine. I realize that being over 50 makes me a doddering old relic, but hopefully I am one of the over 50 types who is "growing younger while living longer." The last time I looked in the mirror this wasn't happening, but maybe if I spend more time on the amazing Internet?

Note from doddering old "over 50" person: I have news for you, I was using a computer in 1982---almost certainly when the author of this book was toddling around in diapers. I was one of the first people to use the freakin' Internet for crissakes.

Since the Internet "is the key to immediate information and wish fulfillment," my wish for a new Aston-Martin Vantage should be just be a mouse-click away. Damn! I just tried it and my 1999 Ford Explorer is still out in the driveway. So much for immediate wish fulfillment.

Common Sense

I have trouble understanding how this book got such high reviews. I'm wondering if mindless Marketing people support their own kind, but for the rest of us who have surfed the web and understand simple concepts, this book is just a step above useless. It was actually a long read for the amount of substance it offered, and extremely repetitive (to fill space I'm guessing) but it could have been a 2-part article online...and I've read better as such. I'm a web designer and I was looking for some deeper SEO tricks and/or some tangible marketing advice beyond meta tags, start blogging, and make a facebook fan page...duh, thanks. For real SEO advice I recommend a dedicated SEO book, and for a good book of marketing advice...well, tell me when you find it.

An online marketing book that both educates and inspires

In this comprehensive guide to online marketing, you'll learn everything you need to know in order to create and execute a powerful online marketing plan.

Lorrie covers all the components of online marketing:

* Web Analytics
* Search Engine Optimization
* Online Advertising

For each component, Lorrie shares best practices, real-life examples and resources. I've been doing online marketing for several years and I've learned some new things from this book. This is also the first time I've read a clear explanation of web analytics and search engine optimization.

Why this book is so powerful:

* the online marketing components are presented in a very clear and easy to understand format. There's no technical jargon; Lorrie writes for the business person, not the technology person.

* the emphasis on setting your strategy before jumping into the tactics. Setting up online accounts like Twitter is very easy; it's your strategy that will determine if you're successful.

* the tactical steps help you get started. For example, Lorrie reviews the pros and cons of self-hosting a blog.

* the material is reinforced by the questions at the end of every chapter. There's even an online test to further reinforce your knowledge!

* the hard copy book is great for reference. I'll definitely keep this book on my desk.

* the listing of additional online resources for each marketing component.

* the final chapter on putting it all together. This chapter includes a sample timeline for getting started, examples of goals and measures of success.

The book is titled, "MGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course: Online Marketing." I'm not sure of the significance of the 36 hour reference, is it supposed to take 36 hours to read this book? Or, take 36 hours to implement the plan suggested in the last chapter? In spite of this minor confusion, I really enjoyed this book.

This is a wonderful and valuable resource for anyone wanting to create an effective online marketing plan. The strategy and tactics detailed in this book are effective for large and small companies, as well as for individuals.
