Great book for kids

My kids (10 and 8) like to read words from this book. It has 15 sessions (chapters) such as foods, clothing, animals, transportation and so on. In each session you will find 10-25 words in English and in Spanish with a picture. It's a good book to learn nouns that are commonly used.

Very nice!

Love it! Love the light shading in some of the outlines. Coloring comes out nicer that way.
Pages are not overcrowded with pictures or text which makes for a nicer design altogether compared to other human anatomy coloring books. No, this is not my first A&P coloring book. But, it's the first one I enjoy both visually as well as educationally.

Embalming Textbook review

I went to a professional embalmers conference this year and met the author and some of the contributors to chapters in the book. I was able to preview the book prior to purchase. I came away very impressed with the thought process that went into its compilation. This is probably the most complete treatise on the topic of embalming.

This book arrived very promptly and packaged well. The 5th Edition has more in depth information while clearly set out. My daughter looks forward to using her new text book for her chosen career. In NZ this text book is required for Diloma in Embalming classes. Good value and very happy with the content.

Great comprehensive reference for new sea kayaker

Prior to getting this book I had one lesson and had paddled five or six times mostly in ocean harbors and estuaries. I have paddled several times since. I have done a fair amount of small boat sailing and canoeing before taking up kayaking.

The Complete Sea Kayaker's Handbook did a great job helping to fill in my knowledge of kayaking in general and to help "remind" me of some of what I learned in my lesson. It is well put together and has a nice mix of anecdote and information, with more of the latter. The book is specific to sea kayaking which I also appreciated. I am not terribly interested in white water kayaking and didnt want a book that wasted my time with more then casual information on the subject.

Hightlights for me:
- Detailed and well presented information on kayak design and construction.
- Nice explanations of paddle technique I was actually able to apply after I read the book (as a supplement to my lesson).
- Informative chapters on navigation and logistics without belaboring the subjects.
- Interesting side-bars going into more detail on one point or another throughout the book.

I think the best thing about the book is Shelley's easy going yet informative writing style. The illustrations and photos were clear and useful. The tone of the book was that of a very well informed friend rather then some kind of uber-kayaker. This book worked for me. Good luck in your paddles!

Read this book before purchasing a kayak

I like to browse the boating sections of outdoor stores and listen to the staff recommend equipment to people just getting started in kayaking. It can be a terrific learning experience and the best stores will always recommend good instructional manuals and the importance of taking lessons. The one book they always seem to suggest is Shelley Johnson's Sea Kayaker's Handbook. It covers all the basics but goes one step further. For instance; it is commonly explained that "the longer a boat is the faster it will go and the better it will track". There is a sidebar entitled "It isn't so simple" which carries the explanation a little further. Another section covers how to handle wind. Reading this section would be very helpful to a new paddler purchasing their first boat because one of the basic decisions is whether to have a rudder or skeg. A little knowledge here could save a lot of money and make the sport much more enjoyable. Read this book, ask questions of a knowledgeable salesman, buy a boat, take a lesson or two, have fun, see you on the water!!!

Excellent Comprehensive Kayak Handbook

After previewing several kayak books in the "handbook" category (those that cover the activity broadly and without specializing in any specific topic), I ultimately decided on Shelley Johnson's Complete Sea Kayaker's Handbook. I was hesitant to go with the title due to its corporate publisher (McGraw Hill imprint) figuring the smaller publishers with more specialization in outdoor activity publishing would offer better books or the more well known authors might have better selections. But the reviews kept leading me back to Johnson's rather inexpensive but very comprehensive Handbook.

The most important aspect of this title is Shelley Johnson's writing style. I found most kayak books to read like the author was an outdoors' person trying to be a writer rather than an excellent writer laying out all the key concepts of the activity. That being said, Johnson has impressive credentials and a solid understanding and mastery of kayaking and covered all aspects in respectable detail compared to many of the other "handbooks" that were rather short.

Three negatives come to mind and are minor flaws only. Pictures in the book (very good photography, I might add) almost all displayed Current Designs kayaks which seemed odd considering how many different kayakers were photographed. Made me thing there was some underwriting or sponsorship and annoyed me slightly for some odd reason. Number two is Johnson's use of "she" which is a personal pet peeve of mine rather than using a gender neutral "their" to describe an unknown third person. Finally, 10 pages on cooking with 7 of those pages being recipies was just weird. I understand the book should have a small section on cooking and camping while touring. But 10 pages for cooking seemed excessive.

Trip planning, navigation, and weather were all sensational additions to my developing knowledge. While I have become well versed though hardly fully proficient in most strokes, the chapter on strokes was very well done with good pictures and illustrations. The sidebars bring up a lot of controversies and issues associated with the activity, gear, etc. This book was even better than I had expected it would be and is an incredible value for the price considering the comprehensive nature and better writing style than other similar titles.

CorelDraw the Official Guide

excellent resource book. Good to have at hand later. I am using to learn program by referring to book's visuals of the tutorials that are on the DVD that comes with program or accessible online. I finally just jumped into the tutorials and book and found my learning curve quickly closing. My interest is to learn to draw vector art by tracing and filling over photos. Book has been referred to many times. I recommend it highly.

This book will lose you in a hurry if you're really new to design

From what I've read of the other reviews, everyone seems to be at least somewhat experienced with graphic design with Corel or some other program, and they all seem to love it. As for me, I won a copy of X5 in a raffle and I'm pretty computer savvy, I figured "I can do this!" so I got on Amazon and bought a copy of what was generally reviewed as the best guide to CorelDraw X5. I'm no idiot, but I'm not a designer either.

My complaint isn't about the quality of the book, I have no doubt that it is very thorough and complete, but from what I can tell so far, it is not very newbie friendly.

Let me give you an example. The first few pages are introduction type stuff (how to create a new document, etc). At page 6, the first example of how to do anything, you will find the following, "...B-splines are unlike paths produced with the Bezier and other drawing tools; they don't always have nodes directly on a path to steer a curve segment after or during drawing..." WTF is a B-Spline, a path, a bezier, a node, or a curve segment? The book assumes that you already know all this stuff.

Maybe I am an idiot, I dunno, but I will be putting this book back on the shelf until I buy an idiots guide X5 and practice a bit with that.

Good reference book.

Honestly it was the only book I could find at the time, but it is fine! It covers anything I will ever do, which is fairly complex at times. It covers everything from making a brochure to making a bowling shirt! Covers basics to complex, even has a few color photos which are kind of "basic" but still unusual in a thick computer book.

Jack Z. Sissors was a professor of media planning and strategy at Northwestern University. He created and edited The Journal of Media Planning and spent many years at Leo Burnett and other top advertising agencies.

Roger B. Baron is senior vice president and director of media research at DRAFTFCB, whose clients include SC Johnson, MillerCoors Brewing Company, Boeing Aircraft, State Farm Auto Insurance, Taco Bell, and Merck Pharmaceuticals. A great primer and information resource!

I've worked in the media departments of two major advertisers and a major advertising agency--and I use this book all the time when I need help on any training sessions I am conducting. It is very thorough with all information you need, but also concise enough not to get bogged down.
For my own use, I find the section on Media Planning Resources on the Internet and invaluable tool to find more information.
A must for any media planner's or buyer's bookshelf!

Sound Media Basics

One of the mysteries of the UK ad scene is that there is no good, up-to-date, practitioner-written textbook on media planning, so the arrival of an updated version of an established US text is doubly welcome.
Jack Sissors and (mostly, as a result of Mr Sissor's ill-health) Roger Baron have done a very thorough and comprehensive job of explaining and illustrating the basics, from how to get information about any given medium to how to put together a strategy and a detailed plan.
Unsurprisingly, the material is purely US-based, and therefore includes, for example, considerable discussion of the problems of reconciling different area definitions; but analyses such as how to weight a plan by region or medium can apply, suitably modified, anywhere.
There is a wide range of suggestions for (mostly) websites from which to seek detailed information, some of which may be both unfamiliar and useful to non-US readers - the MPA's analysis of the effects of position and ad size in magazines is a good example....
Many of the references may seem old, but, as the authors make clear, they have gone back to the classic originals of basic thinking - and much of this still holds good today.
The new edition is up-to-date, with quite extensive discussion of the internet as a medium, and slightly more limited coverage of cross-media and multi-media planning. Conversely, data fusion barely gets a mention - and is not in the index. Nor are optimisers, which are not discussed in any detail - merely treated as a tool of the trade - or modelling, which gets a brief half page on p374.
If the book has a weakness, it is in the area of evaluation, which gets several mentions, but little detailed discussion. In an era where effectiveness has marched up advertisers' list of priorities, this may need addressing next time.
Nonetheless, any would-be media person should read it, and learn.

Unless you want to refresh your memory on what GRPs, impressions, and reach and frequency are, or unless you want to know the definitions of these terms, this book isn't for you.
An earlier edition of this book was one of my first books when I have just entered the ad media planning field and I found it really interesting.
However, now that I have more than 8 years of working in the field, it seems to be a bit superficial. There's limited information on the debates between effective frequency, recency, and the proposed 'mid-point' of effective recency. There's also limited discussions on the role of ad media research as the media world explodes (e.g., R&F for the Net?), or the role of different channels/media beyond TV, radio, press, direct mails, and magazines.

About the Author
Victoria Johnson, CFRE, is a successful grant writer, fundraising professional, and author who is one of only a few hundred in the country to hold the designation Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), practice-based credentials that demonstrate a proven mastery of the standards set for core knowledge and skills required of fundraising executives after at least five years of experience.

In addition to her current role as Development Director for a major metropolitan city, Johnson has twenty years of professional experience in grant writing and research, grant management, public relations, donor cultivation, fundraising, capital campaign readiness, corporate sponsorships, special event planning and implementation, press releases, collateral material design, budget monitoring, and contract administration. She is also on the Board of Directors for Friends of the Library, Los Gatos, CA.

She is an acting member for her local Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) chapter, has been a featured speaker at the Silicon Valley chapter of AFP, and served on an "Ask the Experts" panel in June 2009. Her article on fundraising, "What's Working," was published in the July/August issue of Philanthropy magazine.

She holds a BS from San Jose State University with a major in Business Administration, and served in the US Air Force Reserve and the California Air National Guard.

Save your $500 bucks -- cancel that one-day grantwriting workshop and instead, buy this book for $20 !

Like myself, the typical reader of this book has probably already written quite a few letter and/or full grant proposals to foundations, corporations and -- as in my case, coauthored a successful NEH proposal -- and probably has attended one or more grant writing workshops. So, to see yet book like this, they're probably thinking, "Oh no, not ANOTHER grant writing book..."

Why? Because after writing a lot of proposals and skimming more than a few really boring books saying basically the same thing one-after-the-other, one begins to think that they've mastered the process and maybe there's not a whole lot else to learn.

Well, I'm happy to say that -- whether you're a beginner willing to spend $20 for this book instead of $500 for a one-day grantwriting workshop, or an "old dog" like me, hoping to learn a few new tricks -- this book has some excellent suggestions that are sure to increase your chances of success for your next grant proposal. And, after all, with money so tight, we all need to cover every angle to make sure that it's OUR proposal that rises to the top of the pile and gets funded.

Sure, it's a lot of common sense, but pulled together, the reader will find some good advice that's sure to be helpful:

Take your facts -- present them logically and accurately -- and add heart.

Relate everything you write in the proposal to the project you're seeking support for.

Keep the mission of both organizations in mind as you write, both yours' and theirs'.

Add to the proposal content your organizations' personality.

Don't sound like you're begging; instead remember that you're giving the grantor an opportunity to carry out its mission!

Don't let the time and effort overwhelm you, break it into small steps and repeat to yourself, "Grant proposals are fun and easy to write," and you'll do fine.

Make sure your proposal is easy to read, with a warm style and an active voice.

Give the grantor everything they want, add letters of support from your community, but remember that an irresistible proposal is free of extraneous information.

Keep your budget realistic; clearly state the need, the urgency and how your organization is the solution to the problem.

Present the grantor with an opportunity and pull out all the stops to refer to experts and add compelling quotes to "add that zing" to your request.

Attend funding conferences or workshops, introduce yourself, sit on the front row, and be noticed.

Use your content for another proposal, take photographs of projects funded and be newsworthy, use the content for newsletters.

And so forth... great tips !

Save your $500 bucks; cancel that one-day grant writing workshop and instead, buy this book for $20 and ask the boss for a day off to go home and read it over a few cups of coffee with no distractions and a yellow legal pad. Not only will you be glad you did, but your boss will too!

Best fund raising book for small nonprofits

As a person who worked in fund raising for seven years and who read the book thoroughly, I have to say this is THE book I'd buy if I were working for a small nonprofit.
So many how-to books these days are broad and general, offering no real substance. Others are boring. This one has a wonderful voice which makes it fun and easy to read, it's well-organized, and the chapters are packed with specific resources.
Not least, for the person who's starting with his/her first proposal, there are whole sample grant proposals in the back from a variety of institutions. It's really a fantastic book, and so inexpensive!
Finally, you get all the benefits of Victoria Johnson's website, the grantwhisperer.com and her blogradio broadcasts and call-ins.

Outdated book with old information

I've written many grants and read several books on grant writing as a consultant. This book is unfortunately riddled with old information and poorly written. It seems like the author retired ten years ago and did not stay current on changing regs, processes, on online resources. There are plenty of other good books on the topic that are more current and better organized. There are also free guides that are shorter and to the point on some non profit web sites.

Some good points, but not my favorite...

I found that reading "The New Articulate Executive" was a little difficult. It was written fairly dry, and I had a hard time keeping an interest - I pretty much had to make myself read it. There were a few good ideas and lessons though, mostly in the first half of the book.
One of the key takeaways was the POWER (Punch, One theme, Windows, Ear, Retention) formula: to have a strong start, have one theme in the presentation, support your theme with good examples, use conversational language in your presentation, and have a strong ending. Some ideas Toogood gave for having a strong start include beginning with the ending by giving an overview of the "big picture" in 45 seconds, telling a personal story that is related, and using humor, which is obviously very risky. When defining the outline of your presentation and theme, Toogood proposes two methods: the rocket and the necklace. The rocket uses sub-themes and examples to connect to your overall theme, while the necklace uses one theme (no sub-themes) with examples. Some ideas the author gave for having a strong ending include summarizing the key points, loop back to the beginning, and calling for action of your audience.
Toogood also mentioned some time-based tips that I felt were useful. The first of these tips was that an audience typically has an attention span of 18 minutes - he calls it the "18 minute wall." He recommends that the presenter switches gears every 18 minutes to keep the audience engaged by holding a Q&A session, showing a video clip, telling a story, etc. The second time-based tip he introduces is the "8 second rule," which states that the presenter has 8 seconds to grab the audience's attention. The last tip is the "8 second drill," which is more of an exercise in being able to bottom line your point in 8 seconds. He recommends starting at getting your bottom line down to 3 minutes, then working your way down to 8 seconds.
There are some other miscellaneous tips that Toogood gives that I thought were of interest. He suggests making graphics to scale when trying to show changes in growth or size, and simplifying charts and graphs as much as possible. I believe the latter suggestion is hard to do in my particular field because the business needs to be able to see the numbers rather than visualizing them.

A Great Book Now Even Greater

Until this book came out, it was really hard to imagine how Granville Toogood, or Granny, as he is known to his friends, colleagues and clients, could have improved on his original version of The Articulate Executive. But, now comes the NEW Articulate Executive, which IS new, interesting, sensible, insightful, and even more practical than its predecessor. It is also vintage Granville Toogood.

Here's a special tip. Skip right to page 215 and take The Articulate Executive Quiz. It's a very interesting self analysis. The quiz is your systematic roadmap to help maximize Granny's wisdom. It will also help you bring into focus your vision of yourself, how to articulate it and achieve it. Great leaders are articulate leaders. Visionary leaders can articulate their vision. Look, Act and Sound Like a Leader

The Author Granville N Toogood started with a very good point that "when you marry brains and talent with outstanding communications skills, the sky's the limit". I have to agree with the author that business people should borrow experience from politicians. Author clearly explains "Getting the message across" chapter with rocket and necklace theme and adding them to "POWER formula". The "8 second rule" and the five ways to get around the 18 minute audience attention span are valuable information. The "Powerpoint paradox" chapter got lot of valuable important information for readers who rely on PowerPoint too much. The 10 things never do, three rules; (1.)The Oreo, (2.) Get rid of those word slides, and (3.) Tell and shows are useful information.

This book is extremely helpful to everyone who wants to Look, Act, and Sound Like a Leader.
