About the Author

Mark Lester is an experienced grammarian, ESL expert, and professor emeritus of Eastern Washington University. He was the founding chairperson of the ESL department at the University of Hawaii, considered one of the best ESL programs in the US. A very good book!

I am a non-native speaker and I am enjoying this book. I believe it can be a good help for all ESL students - and teachers. The explanations are really clear and the exercises are very efficient (it comes with a very helpful answer key!). It's good to be able to practice with the different English verb tenses. Thanks.

barely use it, but when we need it, we love it

This is a book I bought for home reference. We BARELY use it, but when we need it, it is an excellent resource.

We mostly refer to it when comparing English grammar to how other languages work - the kids are learning Latin, German, and Spanish.

Great book to have on hand. Written for English-manguage-learners who need to write. Perfect for quick explanations and giving excellent examples.

Well worth it!

Being a native Hindi speaker and aware of the similarities between the two languages, I was keen to find a book that taught the Nasta'likh script used to write Urdu minus other information on grammar, conversation, etc. This book is truly well worth it (and very reasonably priced too!). After an enthusiastic start, I wondered if it would have been better had the different series of the Urdu alphabet been clubbed together as I'd seen in other books. However, in retrospect, the approach taken by this author was quite clever. Some alphabets were/are naturally difficult to master but this layout doesn't give you the feeling you're going no where. And that is because almost every subsequent chapter contains letters that a previous chapter has already done the ground work for. This made it easier to progress without feeling like putting down the book for "later." I do agree, however, that a larger font might be useful for future editions. But regardless of that tiny (constructive) criticism, I'd definitely recommend buying a copy of this book if you fancy learning the Urdu script! It truly gives you enough grounding to begin to read newspapers, signboards, etc. (at a snail's place at first!) before heading on to more challenging projects.

Good quality book

I like that the author does not assume that you already know Urdu as some books do. The author knows that the language is complex along with the writing of it, so he takes it step by step. I like that he breaks down the letters and the book teaches you to identify letters within words. It was just what I needed, since I'm just starting to learn Urdu.

Very good for beginners

I'm a hindi and urdu speaking person and found this to be an ideal start to learn the script.
The examples are relevant and practices at the end of the chapter are fun. Found it hard to keep it down, as the results were almost immediate.
Highly recommend for any beginner of the urdu script. Good value for money too.

I love how it's set up, but assumes knowledge in several spots.

I got a 700 on the math portion of my SATs, but that was 10 years ago. Now that I am going back to finish my degree, I find myself horribly rusty in math and was looking for a good book to refresh my understanding. I love how this book is set up. It has simple step by step solutions to problems and made it very easy, but then when you get to the practice portion, there are certain problems there that were not explained in the solution. For example, in the subtraction area I was flummoxed when I got to subtracting 81,406 from 8,000,000. So I borrow 1 from the next number like the book says, but what does a 0 become? How do I borrow 1 from a 0? I know this is a simple problem I could do in my head, but I was trying to remember the basic problem solving principles of math and I was at a loss since it's been 17 years since I took this in middle school. The same problems occurred in other areas of the book as well and I'm not looking forward to the really difficult parts.

I figured it out (I think), but I wish I had been given some more examples. Instead of just the one basic example, maybe a couple more of different scenarios and this book would have been perfect. As is, I wish I could return it, but I already wrote in the darn thing.

VERY HELPFUL FOR THE MATH CHALLENGED

I am presently in college and boy oh boy do I ever need help with my Algebra math class. I graduated 30 years ago and back then we never even heard of algebra in my school. Here I am at age 64 trying to figure out why it is important to even know algebra and trying to find some number to make sense out of the alpha letters they use. I was feeling so lost in my class because it goes at the speed of sound and just when I thought I was getting one concept we are off to another topic. I knew I needed help so I went to my company of choice online, Amazon and I looked at a lot of books but I decided to purchase Pre-Algebra Demystified because you can preview quite a few pages and it spoke to me in layman's terms.

There are step by step guides on every page and you will see how each problem is done to get the answer. This book is also available for Kindle and I downloaded it on that so when I am waiting around I can practice. I am okay that I will never be an A student of math, I just want to pass so I can get my Criminal Justice degree. This was a great purchase and I also found out they have a series for any kind of math you may need.

Once again Thanks Amazon for having what I need. Good Luck to all of my Senior friends, we just need some plain English assistance and this one works for me.

Still a challenge

I enjoy these books. The content is fed to me a step at a time with exercises to solidify my understanding and explanations for the times I got it sideways. I get to work at my own rate, go over things several times or pass through with a glance depending on my recall of the concepts. The authors and editors seem to have had me in mind when these books were published. I am a 50+ college grad who has had a long separation from academic circles and yet has a fondness for the workbooks of my elementary years. These fill my weird personal gap. I have heard they are handy as an adjunct to those still in school also.

Today, the U.S. faces the challenge of sustaining prosperity in the face of rapid technological change. Though fairly Eurocentric in focus, Bernstein's narrative tracks the development of these essential ingredients to prosperity over a global landscape-the great dynasties of China get plenty of attention here, as do the Japanese. Bernstein, a noted financial expert, reminds us that the invention of the locomotive and the telegraph prior to 1850 had a much greater impact on the lives and well-being of the people of that era. Explaining everything, or at least trying to

There really is quite a bit good about this book. For one thing, it is very readable. Economic history is not usually regarded as a subject for a real page-turner, but Bernstein manages to come close. For another thing, his economics is solid. He is, as one would expect of a working investment advisor, a free market economist, but he isn't an ideologue. He recognizes that there is more to life than the free market. So he can point out, p. 270, that under Meiji Japan the landlord-tenant system was economically efficient yet a social disaster. And he writes, p. 339, that "History teaches that significant wealth inequality is not as benign as a moderately uncomfortable tax burden is." One of those three stars is for that sentence alone.

So why only three stars? Because economic history needs both good economics and good history: Bernstein's history is very bad indeed.

The first thing that jumps out is how Bernstein relies on popular histories. When he discusses the Middle Ages, for example, he repeatedly cites Barbara Tuchman's _A Distant Mirror_. That is a very good popular history of 14th century northern France. She used scholarly sources, which in turn used original period sources. But this is another way of saying that what we get from Bernstein is three steps removed from concrete facts to ever vaguer generalization, rather like repeatedly photocopying a document. Statements about one place and time get turned into statements about Europe in the Middle Ages. When you deal in vague generalizations you can make the history fit any desired mold. Anyone claiming to have a brilliant historical insight should at least read actual historians.

On a more concrete level, there are countless howlers: We have the Catholic Inquisition in Edinburgh over a century after the Scottish Reformation. We have a credulous retelling of the story of Galileo dropping weights off the leaning tower of Pisa. We are told that the "conventional military wisdom" is that an American defeat at the Battle of Midway might have forced the U.S. to sue for peace. Who holds this conventional wisdom? Not any military historian who doesn't want to get laughed out of the room. One is left with the feeling that he learned this from watching bad documentaries on the History Channel. And so on, and so on, and so on. The book is full of these.

Playing a game of 'gotcha!' is beside the point if the book holds together despite the occasional error. Unfortunately, it does not. The thesis breathlessly reported in the promotional material is that the economic revolution of England circa 1820 was the result of four factors coming together: property rights, scientific rationalism, capital markets, and modern transportation and communication. This actually is only the subject of less than half the book. Much of the rest is devoted to the proposition that these same four factors are necessary and sufficient for other nations to reproduce the revolutionary growth. It really isn't obvious or clear that the basic factors needed to invent a phenomenon are the same as those needed to duplicate it. The assumption, apparently unexamined, results in an unhappy combination, with yet more tucking and folding and stretching needed.

Consider the fourth factor, modern transportation and communications. In 1820 this meant railroads and telegraphs. Bernstein correctly shows how their invention resulted from modern science and their exploitation was made possible through property rights and capitalization. In other words, railroads and telegraphs resulted from the other three factors. But this means that transportation and communications aren't a fundamental factor at all, but derive from other, more basic factors: combine the three fundamental factors, stir, let the pot simmer for a couple of centuries, and you have your fourth factor. It doesn't make sense to treat it as fundamental when considering 1820 England. On the other hand, other nations have no need to re-invent the railroad. So if you look at how other nations can reproduce the effect, it makes sense to treat transportation and communications as a basic necessity.

That's a pretty abstract complaint. Even it does involve a bit of folding and tucking, who cares so long as the model works? But it doesn't. Bernstein completely fails to explain how Germany underwent similar growth in the 1890s. On page 157 he notes the tiny German capital market in 1873, and on page 370 he mentions that 1870 to 1913 Germany had the second-fastest growth in the world. How can this be? This is not merely nitpicking. If Germany lacked any of the purportedly necessary factors, yet achieved rapid growth without them, the thesis is disproved. I honestly don't know if Bernstein didn't notice the problem, ducked the issue, or has an explanation but left it out to keep his page count down.

The whole thing smacks of a pet idea which attempts to neatly tie everything together, but fails. Were this the first draft of a doctoral thesis it would, one trusts, be followed by extensive revision. But in the hands of an established writer it gets published, and he being a capable writer, he writes convincingly.

So why do I give it as many as three stars? For the reasons I gave in my first paragraph, I think this is a suitable book for some readers. Someone who wants a painless introduction to both history and economics will come out knowing more than when he went in, and reading this book might lead to reading better books. But for my money I think that even after fifteen years Paul Kennedy's _The Rise and the Decline of the Great Powers_ holds up well and covers a lot of the same ground better.

So much info, so easy to read, a rare combination!

William Bernstein is an excellent economics and business writer. Bernstein has the ability to teach and write about technical concepts in the most accessible way. "The Birth of Plenty" is no exception. This book covers such a breadth of subjects regarding economics, political science, history from the antiquity to nowadays.

His theory is not unique. The countries who prosper are the ones who give their citizen the right to own their property, to communicate freely with each other, to practice the scientific method to replace outdated traditional knowledge, and to take business risk with other people's money. In summary, the countries who prosper are the ones who allow individuals to reap the fruits of their risk-taking efforts. These are not new and original ideas.

After all, there is a long list of economics writers who pretty much said the same thing starting with Adam Smith back in 1776 in the "Wealth of Nations." More recently, Hernando de Soto wrote about the exact same subject in "The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism triumphs in the West and fails everywhere else." Also, David Landes' book "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations: Why Some are So Rich and Some So Poor" adopts the exact same theory as Bernstein's. My list could go on an on. This is because it is a subject that fascinates and never gets exhausted.

Even though all the above books are excellent and some are true classics in comparative international economics, Bernstein's book shines because it is so much more readable, accessible, and entertaining to read. While the others come across as dull economics professors, Bernstein comes across as an incredibly lively journalist. He turns his treaty on economics history into a real page turner giving David Browne's "Da Vinci Code" a run for his money [in the page turning department]. Thus, by reading this book you will learn just as much if not more than the other books I have mentioned, and you will have so much more fun.

Great Historical Read

Normally, I read histories, but not economic books. This one first caught my attention with its title and then its cover. From the very beginning I was seduced by the clarity of the prose and the unique perspective this book offers on our past development and future prospects. Bernstein explains his theories and illustrates them with case studies of Holland, England, Spain, France, and Japan, followed by the Ottoman Empire and an overview of Latin America. Essentially this book explains why we, the United States and other English speaking countries, have wealth and so many other countries do not. Not content to rest there, Bernstein discusses if this wealth makes us happy and its relationship to democracy. While this is much to absorb, the writing style flows smoothly and the historical sweep is dazzling.

Former IRS attorney offers general advice on paying less and getting more

It's hard to judge these many books on taxes and tax-related issues because a reviewer doesn't necessarily know what a specific reader needs to know.

In my case, I'm interested in tax advice to the self-employed. I want to get all the deductions to which I'm entitled. In reading a number of books of late, I've discovered I've been lax in that area.

We can't expect our tax preparer to dig out deductions for us. Nor our software or anything else. We have to understand the current tax law as it relates to us and find our own deductions. That's why these books exist. Of course, some exist to help you prepare your taxes. But I'm not interested in that type of book.

All that said, I was somewhat disappointed in this book written by an ex-IRS attorney. Certainly he's qualified to write the book and I did learn some useful information. But the book was rather general and not specific to the self-employed.

But he does offer some interesting advice.

You learn about business gifts and how to get the most bang for your buck. For example, "So how do you decide whether to treat gifts of tickets as entertainment or as business gifts? The answer is very simple. If the face value of the ticket is less than $50, you should treat it as a business gift and deduct 100 percent of the cost up to $25. This would result in a greater deduction than if you classified this as a gift of entertainment, which allows only a 50 percent deduction."

He continues, ". . . if the cost is $50 or greater, you would want to classify this as entertainment and deduct 50 percent of the ticket cost without limit."

"Use entertainment tickets as business gifts to avoid the $25 ceiling, he adds."

There is also an interesting section about how to determine the difference between making repairs to your home or making actrual home improvements. Even the IRS has issues with that one, he says. He also tells the reader where one is better than the other and why.

"When should you try to make an improvement and when should you try to make repairs? At first, they seem similar, but learning to classify and structure them correctly can result in thousands of dollars of extra benefits to you."

"Improvements make the property better in some way. You make improvements when you do one or more of the following:

You increase the value of the property.
You make the property last much longer.
You adapt the property to a new or different use."

The author also discusses fringe benefits when you own your own business. He says, "The myth that 'my accountant takes care of my taxes' has kept people ignorant about all the amazing fringe benefits that are available."

Trouble is, most of these benefits, while handsome indeed, only work for those with employees. Many people looking for tax advice are one-person shops. I was hoping I could deduct my home gym. No such luck.

There's a lot of information in this book but I felt that the first half was written a decade ago. It talked about how to mail in your return and how to fill it out and pay. It didn't mention sending it in via the Internet as many of us do today and making electronic payments. It even discussed installing telephones. How quaint in a time when we're all disconnecting the things.

Only in the second half do we sense we're getting new, updated information. And it's critical that what we read is current because the tax code is radically changing.

In general, I don't recommend this book unless you feel you might benefit from something in it that you can't find elsewhere.

I have read and highly recommend J.K. Lasser's 1001 Deductions and Tax Breaks 2011: Your Complete Guide to Everything Deductible -- an excellent book full of valuable information.

This book should be a handy reference for you and your accountant

Lower Your Taxes - Big Time 2011-2012 4/E is a big, meaty book with helpful tips like how to deduct your fun, how to turn your vacation into a tax deductible write off, and fringe benefits available to small businesses like yours (plus tons more great tips!). Written by a former IRS attorney, this book is packed full of good tips you should know. For small business owners it offers some ideas for reducing your tax burden that you might not have thought about. This would be a good book for you and your accountant to use to start the discussion to make sure you are taking advantage of the tax savings available for your small business.

I pay very little taxes legally.

I read these books every year. I would recommend to anyone as a foundation to understand taxes. As a real estate investor and business owner I lowered my taxes by $15,000-$25,000 a year. Actually one piece of the advice from the book saved my Mom $20,000 in taxes in one year. I still recommend getting a great CPA, Enrolled Agent, or a prepaid legal plan that offers the credible advice.

The problem with America is lack of education in certain areas. So buy the book and stop over paying the IRS

Lost chances!

First of all, my comment specifically addresses the kindle edition and the technical side of it. As for the content, the book is amazing - no complaints there.
Amazon seems not to understand or just ignore the difference between fiction books that you read from page one onwards, possibly in one sitting, and academic handbooks.
I bought the book for my new iPad mini and as it is - it's nearly useless.
By buying this, you end up with a bunch of over 4000 numbered pages of text in digital format, just like you would scan the paper version.

1. There is no clickable or expandable table of contents.
2. You can't do full-text search, actually there is no text search at all.
3. There are no hyperlinks, the Index section is also plain text - no clickable reference to the actual pages.

Someone missed the possibilities that digital format gives and just took the path of the least ressistance.
I will be asking for a refund. If you are considering buying the kindle edition for your iPad, consider Inkling edition, which is a bit more expensive but a lot more useful.

I just downloaded the kindle version and all off the advertised videos are disabled! I feel a bit ripped off. Otherwise good graphics and an overall great book.
