About the Author
James J. Valentine, CFA, has been an equity research analyst for Morgan Stanley, Salomon Brothers, Smith Barney, and PaineWebber. During his career, he also served as Morgan Stanley's associate director of North American research and its director of global training and development, where he was responsible for implementing new programs for more than 1,000 employees located in financial centers around the globe. For 10 consecutive years, Institutional Investor ranked him as one of the top three analysts within his sector.  In 2006, Forbes named him one of the top three analysts among all 2,000 U.S. sell-side analysts that year.  He has been recognized for his stock picking, earnings forecasts and client service from the Wall Street Journal, Thomson Reuters, Institutional Investor, and Greenwich Associates.  He holds a Masters degree in finance and the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.  He lives in a Connecticut suburb of New York City with his wife and three children.

Another Book Review from The Aleph Blog

My friend Tom Brakke, liked this book and said I would too. He was right, and soon afterward, I heard the author speak at the Baltimore CFA Society. Hearing James Valentine speak is an advantage here. He summarized what is most important, which if you are reading the book, it would be chapter 20 (out of 27). It is his FaVeS framework: Forecast, Valuation, and Sentiment, in that order of importance. Remember that as a key to the book if you read it; it tells you what to focus on as an analyst.

Another key, since the book is long, is to look at the shaded summaries which are usually at the back of each chapter. If stretched for time, read those first, and then read the chapter if you didn't get it.

This book aims to focus analysts on information that matters. Aim for information that makes a difference, and that few others have. Create an information web that maximizes the value of your time, and creates value for your research.

This book covers both the buy-side and the sell-side, telling each how to best use the other side. As a former buy-side analyst, to me it means fewer analyses, and better analyses. Aside from that, it is a game: buy-side: identify the better sell-side analysts and listen to them. Sell-side: identify clients that will generate commissions and market their best insights to them.

Regardless, analysts must identify the few factors that account for 80% of the performance in a given industry, and focus on those intensely. It helps to get into the industry organizations, which can help drive insight into the industry as a whole, and provide a backdrop for questions to ask when talking with executives in the industry.

Learning this will give an analyst a leg up on other analysts. Analysts should also understand the basic accounting structures of their industry so that they can identify companies that are not playing fair -- over-reporting income. I would add don't get negative too quickly. Frauds can develop a momentum of their own. Wait until the fraud gets large relative to the size of the industry before issuing a sell call -- wait for price momentum to go to zero. (Note: for investigative journalists, this does not apply. Jump on early, so that you can say that you warned everyone.)

Basic forensic accounting skills help, as do modeling skills, and basic statistical skills. I was surprised to learn a bunch of Excel shortcuts that I haven't seen elsewhere, and I have used Excel for nineteen years at a high level. The summary of accounting deviations is cogent, as well as pointing readers to Mulford and Schilit.

One idea that I heartily agree with: set up your spreadsheets to differentiate data and formulas. Cells with data series should only contain data. Formulas should have no numbers in them, unless they are trivial. This makes analysis a lot easier and cleaner in the long run.

The book also brings out the need to consider multiple scenarios, which help an analyst to flesh out his analysis. Being willing to consider what can go wrong, or right, richens an analysis. Also, the book warns against common pathologies that overcome analysts, notably -- Confirmation bias, overconfidence, Self-Attribution-bias, Optimism, Recency, Momentum, Heuristics, Familiarity, Snakebite (won't go back to one that hurt you), Falling in love, anxiety, over-reaction, loss-aversion, etc. I have experienced a few of those myself, and would have benefited from thinking these through before becoming an analyst.

Quibbles

I would warn any analyst trying to use simple or multiple regression that they are playing with fire, unless they understand the weaknesses of the data, and the limitations of the general linear model. In twelve-plus years working on Wall Street, I never saw regression used right once.

The author seems to favor DCF over multiples. Truth, neither works well, and one must live with the weaknesses of any approach. DCF embeds a lot of assumptions that are known, though some may be wrong -- multiples embed unknown assumptions.

The author does not like price-to-sales. For industrials and utilities I would say look at a chart of price versus price-to-sales. In most cases, they track, because sales don't vary that much in the short run. If you know the high and low P/S ratios for companies in an industry (P/B for financials) you have valuable information. It gives you boundaries to look at in buy and sell decisions.

I would also warn analysts against using Damodaran and those like him. I don't think his models are wrong so much as impractical. I would rather use a simple model that catches 80-90% of the action, versus one that catches 100% of the action, bet cannot practically be calculated.

Who would benefit from this book:

All equity analysts would benefit from this book. It is detailed, and yet practical. Some of our competitors will benefit from it, and if you don't read it, you will wonder why.

A guide for the sell side analyst

This is as far as I know a unique book. It's in essence a number of check lists covering most aspects of the work description of a sell side equity analyst. The book aims to cater to both the buy side analyst and the sell side analyst. In reality it is the later who is in focus. This is no surprise as the author has been a top ranked sector analyst at a number of US investment banks including Morgan Stanley. According to the author the craft of equity research lacks quality control processes. The profession is mostly learnt through on the job training in a kind of mentor-apprentice-system. You might get lucky and have a good mentor, but on the other hand you might not. Valentine's aim with this book is to develop a best practice for the profession.

The book covers a number of topics such as influencing your research coverage, handling relations within you own organisation and with clients, finding insights to include in research, stock valuation and how to best communicate the research done. Valentine is writing a number of lists of things that often is quite intuitive and basic. The list form is hardly the recipe for a colourful writing and as the same advice is repeated in both the check lists and the text surrounding those lists there is a fair amount of repetition.

There is much in this book that irritates me. However the coverage of topics is comprehensive and I would agree that they probably are close to a best practice for the profession. The advice in this book will both be a good guide for a less experienced analyst and it will remind the more seasoned analyst that he perhaps has neglected one or two aspects of what he could do. There is some good advice regarding psychological pitfalls, too few analysts utilize statistical analysis in the way the author suggests which is a shame and there is also a useful discussion around the best way to build financial models for the companies covered by the analyst.

For an investor, outperformance in the stock market is accomplished by either doing something different from others or by acting like most others but being cleverer than they are. This is a best practice for those who have accepted the professional role as it is, i.e. for those who will run with the crowd. The time horizon for the work of a mainstream US sell side equity analyst is one to six months. With a horizon like that, relative stock performance within a sector is driven by changes in company specifics that are not appreciated by consensus and there is a need for near time triggers. The intrinsic value of the stock is less interesting as valuation is slow-acting.

Here instead, value is something relative within the sector covered. First choice for valuation is to assign a pro cyclical single period multiple to the near term estimate. Growth is seen as the primary reason for differences in multiples, notwithstanding that the spread between return of capital and cost of capital is equally important. Many analysts have a deep knowledge of the companies covered but they are simply momentum analysts.

The author's way to try to create alpha, while at the same time doing the same thing as everybody else, is through focus on three to four key variables. This is the best advice of the whole book. There is no chance you can win by knowing more details than other investors on every topic. There is much to gain from understanding what the key issues for the stock are and then dig deeper around these and recognize the rest of the information is non-important noise.

This is a cookbook to produce the short-sightedness of today's Wall Street, but it is also a unique guide for the person working as a sell side analyst. If you are one, or aspire to be one, you really should read it. I would.

Solid material

I thought this book was informative and was a good overview of much of the material on valuation, due diligence, and behavioural finance contained within the CFA curriculum. The author's own experiences surely added more depth to the material.

I would suggest that future editions contain a disc or web access to go into more detail on sections (autocorrelation in residuals, time series, etc..) and provide non analysts with the opportunity to run through exercises.

Or consider exercises on one long valuation throughout the book running from top down, bottom up selection of sector and company. A fictional interview with management, running a history of numbers, forecast earnings..come up with various price multiples..and finally making a recommendation.

I think that would give readers a more interactive experience and help to use those many Excel tricks.

On the whole, I extracted some value from this book.

Must have for sales comp admins & leaders

I keep recommending this book to my team and colleagues. It's a great blend of industry analysis, thought leadership and practical tips. David Cichelli is a fantastic resource in this industry. His experience and knowledge are rightfully documented for us all to leverage as sales comp experts. I agree with the reviewer who stated that this needs to come off the bookshelf and be left on the desk. My copy sits with sticky notes hanging out of it, highlighted passages, and penned notes in the margin.

I have read many books on sales comp and would wholeheartedly state that the first book a person should purchase is "Compensating the Sales Force".

Pedantic but worthwhile

The author does a good job of explaining sales compensation to the uniformed and was laid out in a easy to follow format. His examples are generally good but for some of the more complex possibilities he could have done a better job by providing us with more detailed examples. The book was very helpful in understanding how the world of sales compensation works. Not a creative or innovative book and he does not explain the real motivation behind why variable compensation should be used or what real value it has. The book is about how the world works not about any new or creative ideas. Sometimes that is enough.

Compensation plans that work for the company and the sales force

Outstanding book on how to create compensation plans. Exhaustive resource that covers every facet, even specialty situations and jobs. Perhaps the best book on the subject. "Compensating the Sales Force" starts strong and only gets stronger - not a common feat for most books. David J. Cichelli has made a dry and often academic (or at least a complicated and math laden) topic understandable.

"How salespeople are paid has an immense effect on their performance." Absolutely and perhaps nothing is more important than a compensation plan that aligns the company's goals with the demands of the sales force. That said, and one of the best parts of this book is that Mr. Cichelli avoids "the quagmire
of motivational theories that attempt to explain why sales compensation works." This isn't a book of theory but a detailed instruction manual, the "how-to" of getting a plan created, implemented, and administered.

Comp plans can be daunting. "The setting of target pay, selecting the right performance measures, establishing quotas, determining the mix and upside opportunity, and constructing the right formula are examples of the many choices facing those responsible for crafting the right sales compensation plan." This book has the answers!

The contents are exhaustive, just look at the chapter titles below. If you need to create a comp plan that works, this is the one book that is mandatory reading. "Compensating the Sales Force" has loads of illustrations, charts, and examples. The Appendix has examples, surveys, and even software help for plan administration. Excellent resource.

No updates?

As a current owner of First Aid 2010 (which was used as an accessory, alongside my basic sciences), I purchased the 2011 edition in order to stay up to date. However, this edition is virtualy one and the same as the 2010 edition, with the exception of the following:

- The text is in darker print, hence sharper on the eyes and more legible.
- A few of the dedicated NOTES pages have been collectively moved from the end of certain chapters to the very end of the book. As a result, some sections have fewer pages, or begin at different page numbers, as indicated by the index.

Other than that, it's still a great source for Step 1. Although this edition is cheaper than the 2010 (at the time of this writing at least), I suppose it's somewhat a releif that this edition remains unchanged. For the current 2010 edition owners, there's no update necessary, and nothing new to revise! I hope this offers some advice to anyone unsure as to whether they should update to this new edition. Content is Great - but don't DL the Kindle Version!

I really wanted an electronic copy, so I purchased the kindle version to read on my computer. Unfortunately, the formatting is altered such that some of the sections are unreadable or nonsensical (tables appear as lists so there's no way of knowing what items are meant to aligned). Additionally, figures are so small that labels are hard to read (increasing font size/zoom makes no difference). If you buy this - stick to the print version!

2010 Errata fixed

First of all, First Aid is the gold standard for Step 1 review. Memorize all of First Aid and I'll bet you'll get a 250 or above on your Step 1. Second, this edition took care of those 6 pages of errata from the 2010 version. So unless you feel like going through those 6 pages of errata on the First Aid website and making a ton of changes, I suggest buying the 2011 version. I know there will be a list of errata for this version, as Doctors in Training has already put together a preliminary list, but it is a much smaller list than the one from 2010.

A Good Reference But Not A Primer

This book would be a good addition to your library, but if you are just learning DMX don't look at it as your first book. Start your learning process with a good book on MDX fundamentals, if in fact one exists, then use this book as an excellent means of polishing your knowledge. There is much to be learned, but only if you have a good grasp of the elementary fundamentals of DMX. If DMX is to be your specialty, this book belongs in your library.

Outstanding introduction to the field of Oncology

This is probably the best introductory oncology book I have found. I taught out of it in classes for advanced undergrades, first year graduate students and doctor of pharmacy students. It is comprehensive and easily readable, and the treatment of general concepts is second to none. Some of the listings of identified oncogenes and such are a bit dated, but that should be rectified when the 3rd edition is published (currently expected April 1, 1998). The section on the biology underlying cancer treatment is particularly useful, and hopefully the 1998 update will continue to be so.

Basic????

This book was recommended reading for my postgraduate degree in medical oncology. It is awful! While the content is generally good, it is unfortunately presented poorly:
1) Figures are in black and white (like in textbooks from the 70s)
2) It seems the target audience are molecular biologists, because the content is far from "basic".

I ended up reading Alberts "Molecular Biology of the Cell" and Weinberg's "Biology of Cancer" instead. Those are amazing textbooks, easy to read, and they cover the same topics as Tannock/Hill' book. Sure, Alberts/Weinberg together are close to 2000 pages, but this turned out to be easier, faster and far more enjoyable than reading Tannock/Hill.

Basic Science of Oncology -A not so basic book of oncology

Having heard so much about this book, I was very dissapointed by the fact that this book really wasnt so basic . It does provide a comprehensive analysis of many other aspects of oncology ,but it most certainly is not a book for beginners and at times you feel overwhelmed by the sheer detail with an inability to bring across basic concepts. This is a book for oncologists who have a more than basic grasp of the basic sciences.Read somehing simpler first.

If you want to learn Italian, you have to learn grammar!

This book is perfect! It takes the student through drills of endless verbs, and if you want to speak, read and/or write Italian, you must understand the verbs. It really seems quite daunting! However, get your hands on this workbook! You will be really grateful you have it! Practice an hour a day, and you'll be amazed at the language acquistion you are able to achieve! And those language dictionaries? Don't bother! Use the grammar books. It's not as scary as it looks!

repetition repetition

As anyone knows, the key to learning is repition. The book is straightforward. THere are no cute cartoons, etc. here. Just verbs and worksheets. I even do the work on notebook paper, so I can go back and do the sheets again. After just completing one page of drills, I have learned a lot. She only introduces one skill at a time, so it is not overwhelming. And the added benefit is learning, of course, the meaning of the verbs. I would even suggest this book for teachers of Italian because of the way the book is set up.

Pratica e ripetizione! Great exercise book.

I recommend this book to my students as an extra practice book, on top of the regular material that I present during class. They can do this at their own time, even after taking the course.
Remember, learning a language is like learning a song!! A very very long song, for that matter! You hear it once, and you can't remember a thing, but as you here it more and more, and then start to repeat... you'll be singing before you know it!!
So, for those who really want to learn this musical and romantic language, DON'T GIVE UP!! Everyone feels lost at first, but with some patience, you'll be speaking.
So, I don't think this is a good book to get on its own, it's something you buy on top of other books that can actually teach you the structure. This book alone won't do it. It doesn't have enough explanation and you won't be able to do a thing with it, unless you learn some basic structures first.
It's hard to find one book that fits everyone's learning need. I like Living Language, especially for those who are serious about learning (not just cram a few phrases before a trip).
If time permits, definitely join a course in your area - there's no better practice than to practice in a group!
Also, get some audio CDs, because the books will teach you sentence structure, but the CDs will give you a correct pronunciation.

Good reference guide

This book is a great reference guide for students and professionals. Although it may not fit in my pocket, it is definitely smaller than the rest of my textbooks. A must have for anyone who wants a quick pathology reference. There is a picture(s) for every pathology.

For its size, this is a fine book on pathology. The portability and completeness of this book make it top notch and a required element in any imaging suite's library. Students will love it as an option for hauling large text books to their clinical sites. It is filled with accurate images, both MRI & CT, giving users different perspectives on the same pathology. Great book and a definite must have.

What a relief!

Finally! A clear, concise, on-topic, well-structured approach to studying and performing well on the Bio AP. I used this book with all my students this year, and when they reported back after the exam, they all felt great (well, as great as a nervous teen can be...). The answers were not only clearly explained (without excessive, burdensome detail), but they cross-referenced other questions and answers on related topics. Instead of repeating the same things over and over, the book walks you through an entire year of AP Bio in 169 pages! I really believe that any student who diligently goes through the 500 questions will be more than ready to score well on the exam.

You can also use this book to study for the SAT II in biology. Just leave out the following questions:

Chapter 5- 173-177
Chapter 6- 257, 258
Chapter 8- 294, 297-298 302, 304-309, 325, 338, 343-344, 348-350, 352

the very BEST of all review books

I have been teaching AP Biology for 16 years, and I have worked with all the various AP Biology review books. I was curious when I saw this book listed, and I was very happy and amazed when I read it. This book fills an empty space for teachers and students of AP Biology by providing a comprehensive collection of clear questions of correct content and difficulty. The answer selections are well chosen, and the answers are explained fully and clearly. I will certainly use the questions in this book for homework, quizzes and exams. Absolutely the best review book I've seen.

This is the best prep book I've ever used. Not only are the correct answers available, but the book gives the reasons why the answers are correct and why the other choices are wrong. This is a "must" for anyone preparing to take the AP bio exam. Very well written.
