Keep In Your Briefcase & Regularly Reivew!

I enjoy sales books & LOVE simple but GREAT sales books & I have to put this into the category of GREAT because it is an indea generator for your selling business! Regardless of whether you sell widgets, Athlete's Foot insurance, or Pomeranians, this book is handy & useful.

Let's face it, 80% of sales people are just 'lazy' and that's why they never get out of the 80% income earning bracket when they want to be in the 20% bracket. The worst sin these lazy sales reps commit is a lack of preparation. The majority of them think, "Gee I've heard that before so I already know it!" and if that is true, then WHY aren't they making more money? It's because they're NOT prepared so when they meet Mr/Ms Smith, they're un-prepared!

This book takes a lot of the hard work out of sales preparation as it gives great, simple phrases you can use in your selling situations. Now this in and of itself while terrific is not going to help you much. Why? Because you NEED to take this material and make it your own!

Years ago when I was a struggling sales rep, I read a sales book like this from start to finish then set it on my shelf as a reference tool. Um what good is that? Reference tool? Hah! More like an expensive dust catcher. Once while married, I was in a a nasty selling slump & my wife suggested "Why not use those sales books in your selling?" I figured 'Why not?' and began to apply the ideas, concepts & techniques in them to my own selling situation. At that time I sold door-to-door water reatment/softener equipment. Guess what? Her idea was like gold!

I WISH I had this book at that time because it would have really helped me. Specifically the idea of what to ask my customers. For instance, on page 89, you're told about the Silver Bullet and they are described as: "are ones you can ask any prospect, no matter the product or service you sell." For instance

"What do you currently like about your current supplier?" - which I could have changed to "What do you currently like about your well water?" (or village water system)

"What, if anything would you like to change?" - perfect because the people I was seeing had very HARD water with rust stains in their toilet tanks & plugging up their washing machines & sink taps.

"What have you seen that's particularly appealed to you?" - "Which of my water treatment systems appeal to you?"

There are easy step-by-step guides to help you figure out the best questions & in what order they should be asked. That in itself is very handy as it gives a person a reference point from which to start. Most sales reps being the lazy sots they are often do not have a clue on where to start.

This book would also be a GREAT aid for a Novice in selling! Oh yes! Got a new kid on your team & little time to train them? Then consider giving them a copy of this book as it will give them an edge over the competition & that is being prepared!

On Price, the author recommends (p. 97), "Before I give you our price, I'd like to make sure that you understand everything that it includes. I sthat OK with you?" - that's a wee bit verbose & mechanical sounding, right? Here's how I would've phrased it in for my situations: "Before we discuss price, I need to make certain you understand what we're offering for your particular water situation and how our equipment can solve those problems; are you okay with that?" Wordy? Yeah but it's putting it into MY language & patter not the mechanical sounding that the author suggests.

In the hands of a motivated Novice, this book can make all the difference in going out, kicking butt & taking names in sales. Why? Because it forces the Novice to look at sales as a preparation type of job & if s/he is prepared, then they already have an edge over the 80% out there.

Five stars. Complete. Tidy. Includes 101 Selling Truths many of which are gold. Get this book & most of all USE & APPLY IT! Your monthly sales will only go UP if you do!

Great Book! Create a sales strategy, no problem! Sell something? then I'm a wibbling heap of jelly!

For me, this book is great. It provides great pragmatic, micro-how-to information, and not what-is information, on the practical art of selling...

It gives great grounded, practical advice for the novice salesperson; it provides structure for the academic/intellectual reader, and is a great all-round reference to help the seller target specific companies.

Being a great believer of reading many books on the same subject to obtain different perspectives and pearls of wisdom, this book definitely fills in the gaps that other books leave.

Oh, and it's an easy read.

After leafing through at the bookstore......

I thought I had a WINNER with this book. I leafed through at the book store, really saw what I liked, so I bought it. After reading through, I realized I should have leafed through a little better.

This book isn't BAD by any means -- it's just not all that good. It's some pretty decent information, and it's updated for the sales world of today. I expected more out of it, however, and upon completion of the book, I basically got absolutely nothing out of it. Maybe 1 or 2 little tidbits, but not much.

I'm not a seasoned sales-pro by any means. I've been in sales for 4 years, but still have a lot to learn -- and it certainly won't be from this book.

About the Author

Daphne West has taught in schools and further education colleges; she was Head of Modern Languages at Sherborne School for Girls and Sevenoaks School, and Headmistress of the Maynard School in Exeter. In 1993 she was awarded the Pushkin Medal by the Pushkin Institute, Moscow, for contributions to the teaching of Russian. Now a freelance teacher and writer, her former Russian students include teachers of Russian in schools and universities, as well those who have made their careers in Russia working for businesses and charitable organisations. In January 2010 she became the editor of Rusistika, the Russian journal of the Association of Language Learning.

It lives up to it's title

The book and the CD's that come with it is an excellent starting point for beginners of Russian. You can set your own pace and learn as little or as much as you want. The CD's are in sync with the book and useful to hear how phrases and Cyrillics are pronounced.

I would recommend getting this book to further improve your understanding of Russian alphabet and how to use it. Read and Write Russian Script: A Teach Yourself Guide

After you have started to learn a bit of Russian, I would suggest getting a book like this Russian Stories: A Dual-Language Book to practice your reading skills. One side of the page is in Russian whilst the other side is in English if you ever get lost in translation.

There are also various online resources to learn Russian. Livemocha is a site that has a few Russian lessons. Although it's almost exclusively repetitive word learning, you still learn something from it. [...] gives you about 10+ audio lessons when you register. It's a free trial for 7 days, so just register, find all the free lessons, download them and move on. Of course you can opt to buy their lessons if you want.

Excellent course in an affordable package

The Complete Russian Course with Daphne West is a great course for those of us on a budget. It covers all the essential grammer with plenty of excercises including good audio recordings for speaking and understanding, writing excercises and reading sections for reading comprehension.
The vocabulary is relevant and thorough. Of course to obtain real fluency one's stock of vocabulary and pratice has to go beyond the scope of this course but it is a wonderful foundation.
A great alternative to those of us who can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on Rosetta Stone.

Excellent Resource for Learning Russian

I bought this book and have been working my way thru it. The content is excellent. And both of my disks work fine so I am not sure what the other reviewers were referring to. I would not recommend using Complete Russian as a first book as it is fairly advanced which is hard to avoid when teaching Russian grammar as it is a tough subject. I am using this course after having used Rosetta Stone (levels 1-5), Pimsleur(levels 1-3),Michel Thomas (Total and Perfect) and the Everything Russian course and it is still not a breeze. None of these courses (or any other) will make someone fluent in my opinion. It takes massive and repeated exposure over time to the language to achieve fluency and any of these language courses are just a starting point.

Complete Russian course does an excellent job of describing Russian grammar and the recordings are extremely useful. I am working thru as many courses as I can get my hands on, especially courses with recordings, as it provides more exposure to the language. Each course makes the next one easier of course but every course provides different sentences. After the previous courses that I went thru, I recognized probably well 70% of the words, but the dialogs in this book were quite different from the other course, even with the same words. I definitely feel this course has improved my Russian comprehension immensely. The course deliberately has only partial translations, but there is a reason. Once a word has been introduced it is not described again. This is actually a well thought out strategy as I am constantly referring back to previous dialogs to find the definitions. There are many, many useful phrases in this book that are regularly used in common Russian speech. My wife speaks Russian, and I now recognize many of the phrases from this book when I hear Russians speaking. Examples include simple Russian expressions like "In my opinion" and "What a shame". I had not heard either before in any other courses but they are scattered throughout this course in several dialogs so you begin to recognize them. I found this to be kind of exciting. After this book, I have begun to recognize quite a bit more actual Russian speech than before. The more of these fragments that are understood without thinking (like hello, good bye, how are you, etc.) the better as it makes understanding the language much easier. This is an outstanding course.

Great Book

This book is a great tool for any electrician looking to navigate his or her way through the myriad of rules presented in the 2011 edition of the National Electrical Code as published by the National Fire Protection Association. From the very beginning it gets right down to business and begins with detailed explanations of every bullet point presented starting in Article 90.

While I won't say this is a perfect book, it is extremely thorough and - as an added benefit for some of the more computer-savvy amongst electricians - there is a full PDF copy (which is fully searchable) of the book available for download (the code is under one of those scratch-off areas in the very beginning of the book).

If I had any complaint of the book at all, it would be it's apparent lack of tables. The most glaring of these omissions - at least for me - was the motor tables that come after 430.245 (labeled XIV. Tables). The only reason I can think of for the tables not being included are that they are really pretty self-explanatory and need no further interpretation. There is, though, no where in the book that I have found that expounds on why the tables have been left out (or even that they have been left out).

Aside from that, I really enjoy McGraw-Hill's book. I find it is going to be a valuable addition to mine - and many other people's - library for as long as the 2011 NEC is enforced. I strongly recommend this book unless you feel that the tables in the NEC need further explanation. In that case, you may not find this book to be as useful as I have found it.

This handbook is a superb reference and should be a part of every electrician's library. It has been around for years, and is revised and updated for each new edition of the National Electrical Code. It is written for the serious professional and is very definitive in its Code interpretations. I can't imagine being without it.

International vs Professional edition

In this review I just want to inform the difference between the international edition and the professional edition.

The international edition has 20 chapters and the professional edition has 28 chapters. The chapters that are not covered in the international edition are:
- Intake structures
- Wells
- Chemical handling and storage
- Removal of specific constituents
- Drinking water plant process selection and Integration
- Storage and distribution systems
- Sanitary Sewer design
- Clean water plant process selection and integration

I thought that this was important information in case that someone is thinking in buy one edition or the other. I noticed that until I bought the international edition.

This is the book to get if your are mystified by sometimes hard to follow MWH and/or Metcalf books so common for undergrad/grad courses. Best out there for water and waste water engineering; if your Professor has chosen this book for class you are in good hands!

For Professionals it is a great reference/reminder text. What it lacks in some "theory" it more than makes up for with practical application and input from fellow professionals.

I use the book as a reference, not a text. It seems to contain the information that I need. For example, I recently needed a better understanding of the shape and general design of launders. The subject was adequately covered. However, I did not find a good discussion of the content (chemical and biological) of wastewater - although there is extensive discussion of treatment processes applicable to things that might be in wastewater.

PowerPivot

Practical PowerPivot & DAX Formulas for Excel 2010 is your standard How-to. From the title I expected a little more, and while my rating and this review sounds like a slam, its not. The book is a simpple block and tackle how to use. It well structured but not especially engaging. It reads like a reference text or the user's guide that should come with the product.

With that said, If you're looking for deep insights, cleaver tricks, and interesting examples or fluffy graphics this is not the book. If you're looking for a straight how-to, this is dead on. While I rate it a 3, I'm a very hard reviewer as I go up the scale. If you ask would I purchase the book again or was it a good value, I'd say yes again to both.

Good insight into Powerpivot - book title is accurate

Before I concidered purchasing this book, I already owned three powerpivot books. All were rated close to 5 stars by prior reviewers. I was not excited about yet investing in a fourth book, but I still struggled to identify and use functions available with the feature rich power pivot product. After reviewing the limited previews of this book available on Amazon, I was torn but finally decided to take the plunge in yet another purchase.

Wow, on day one I am using several of the 250 practical DAX formula's. One example is creating "running totals". Searching "running totals using power pivot" on google resulted in identifying complex solutions using the Calculate function. But when reading this book, I find a simple answer, the TotalYTD function! Then I needed to calculate the "percentage of a column" and a "percentage of a parent". Right there in chapter 12. The associated graphics helped immensely when trying to understand the variations of these calcuations.

Of all the four Powerpivot books I now own, this is by far my favorite as it is to the point, easily identifies features that are not readily apparent and helps clarify how to use functions making it very "practical" as the book title states. I carry this book with me to and from work everyday. Best $26 I have ever spent - great price for an excellent new book on Amazon. Now that I own the book, would have spent much more.

Your PIVOT POWER 2010 Excel Formulas Practical

Generally informative book. The author is without question an expert at data analysis and its management. In fact so much that he cannot resist to to digress into MDX, data cubes, SQL, and various other sophisticated data analysis methods. His side-trips make the book less readable and leaves the reader questioning his focus. While the non-DAX matters discussed are very informative, it would appear that the writer could have possibly handled these digressions either as footnotes, or as Appendixes. The book already contains 3 Appendixes and the subjects covered therein are at times repetitive of information covered earlier in the book.
The author could make his book far more readable by citing the navigational instructions in more logical sequence and format. For example, if a command is located buried in the Ribbon, why not start with what the reader sees and drill down from there. The writer seems to prefer to use the quite the opposite, the "drill up" method, which makes the book less readable and forces the reader the do mental gymnastics. Highlighting the COMMANDS in BOLD, or ITALIC letters or some other similar way, even if just capitalized, would make reading much easier by separating the navigational instructions from the text.
The book could certainly have been more readable had the author not wrote it in second person. As it is now, the reader suffers through, or attempts to ignore, hundreds of pronouns .. YOU and YOURS, not one of which advances the thesis of the book. Expecting the reader to read "your data".. and "you do this" .. "you do that" gets boring rather quickly, especially when some sentences contain 3 or 4 "you-s" and "your-s". (If you had to scratch your head with your hand, when your eyes saw the jumbled order of words in the review title, it is intentional and intended to draw attention to the awkward, illogical manner in which command navigations are handled in the book.)
The writer represents that the reader can download from a cited website 250 DAX formulas. The formulas download into .txt formatted documents with no explanations, or any further advice. It is not quite clear from the book how exactly the reader/user benefits from downloading them. The formulas appear to have been formatted to be used with the various data tables and databases discussed in the book.
Discounting the aforesaid organizational and writing style deficiencies, the book is well worth reading; it is certainly a very valuable, very useful reference manual on the subject of DAX formulas; and its price is most reasonable.
I am glad to have bought and read the book for it certainly gave me a good insight, into DAX and will keep it within reach as delve into Business Intelligence type analysis using DAX formulas, and POWERPIVOT in EXCEL 2010.

Easy to Use

Sometimes it is hard to 'toot your own horn' and then back it up with words. I found this book to be really helpful with finding ways to best word my performance. I have allowed some of my co-workers to borrow it for their review assessments as well, and they all have found it to be helpful.
The book is set up to search for topics alphabetically or by job function. This makes it easy to find things related to your job. However, I would encourage you to look at even those not directly related as they too offer some great ways to phrase things.
