You can use this for the SAT US History exam too

While Stephen Armstrong's book `5 Steps to a 5: AP US History' is not designed by the SAT US History Exam, it can help you prepare for it. The book contains a good outline of United States History. There are a total of 480 multiple-choice questions, in six practice exams, that are similar in style and format to the questions on the SAT United States history exam. Half of those questions are on the enclosed DVD, which does not require internet access to use.

The Review of American History is contained in pages 61-308. The review is comparable to the one found in Kaplan AP U.S. History 2013-2014. The Research & Education Associates Study Guide to the A.P. American History Exam remains the best review of American History that I have noticed. Please understand, though, that these outlines of American History are no substitute for a 1000-page course book and outside reading.

At the end of each of the 25 individual review chapters are 5 review multiple-choice questions that defeat their own purpose. The whole point of the sample questions are to have the student work out the choices on their own, but the process is defeated because the answers are in BOLD right below the five multiple-choice answers. It is almost impossible not to see the answer.

At the end of the book, there is a list of 29 books pertaining to specific eras of United States history for further study. There were five of them that I could not find in my local library, so the author deserves some plaudits for constructing a guide of accessible books. I would recommend a book on the Supreme Court such as A People's History of the Supreme Court, because - for a time - the toughest practice questions for me were those that asked about the Court.

As for the other bells & whistles, I could not use either of the internet links mentioned at the end of the book. I had no trouble using the DVD on my laptop. There seemed to be some help for writing essays, but this was not my main focus for using the book. In using an AP History book to prepare for the SAT U.S. History exam, I am mainly concerned with the multiple-choice questions and understanding the documents in the Document-Based questions.

The Kaplan's Guide to the SAT US History Exam is probably the best book to use in order to prepare for the SAT US History exam, but I believe you can find extra help using books for the APUSH exam. The RE&A book and this book, 5 steps to a 5, are good additional resources.

What differentiates the best places to work from all the rest

Worth Reading, with Caution

Written by a pair of business consultants, the principal message of "Re-Engage" is both simple and entirely consistent with the human relations school of managerial thought: treat adults like adults, and they will work like responsible, motivated employees. The authors' views were informed by a great deal of quantitative and qualitative data. Collected by Quantum Workplace on an annual basis since 2004, the research portion of this project consisted of some 2.1 million surveys with more than one million qualitative responses. Employee engagement seems to be defined as a heightened sense of commitment felt by an employee for a particular company, job, or manager and that produces desirable outcomes such as greater levels of effort or longer employment tenures.

Statistical analyses pinpointed several actions taken by leading companies in order to inspire higher levels of engagement. These include nurturing trust, aligning employee efforts with organizational objectives, encouraging professional and personal growth, and recognizing/rewarding positive performance, among others. Throughout the book, the authors refer to what they dubbed three "crosswind factors." These are variables, including generational diversity, diseconomies of scale, and difficult economic conditions, that greatly influence the enactment of various engagement principles. In other words, context matters!

There is plenty to like about this book. For one, it is teeming with rich, qualitative data. This allows the reader to see, in telling fashion, what the "good companies" do well and what the "bad companies" do poorly. The authors' grasp of reality is another noteworthy strength of Re-Engage. So often, human relations literature becomes somewhat aloof, almost acting as if "being nice," by itself, will drive employees to higher levels of productivity. One can sense that the authors of this book have a firmer understanding of what is and is not realistic.

Of course, Re-Engage also contains notable shortfalls. Consider the following:

~ Are these truly America's best places to work? Were all U.S.-based, Fortune 500 companies included in this research? Certainly it is not possible to involve every major American company, but neither should the authors/publisher use the title "America's best places to work" if several Fortune 500 companies did not participate. Also, the survey itself leaves something to be desired. A copy is not included in the book, but the reader can access it online at [...]
. One might reasonably question subjective survey items such as "My employer is family friendly" and "We have enough staff to get the work done right." Questions of validity and reliability are not answered. The book references several appendices that are supposed to be available at the book's website. If they exist, I could not locate them.

~ Re-Engage is no masterpiece in literary terms. While books such as Good to Great offer considerable insight through extensive commentary, this particular book relies most heavily on employee responses that are simply transcribed into book form. There is little weighty discussion. Indeed, some portions of Re-Engage look and feel more like a workbook than, say, something written by Drucker, Senge, or Collins. Do not be fooled by the page count. The book can be read rather quickly--comparatively speaking.

~ Probably due to confidentiality, the authors mention company names very sparingly. Indeed, most companies specifically mentioned by the authors are not Fortune 500 caliber. One fault that might be laid at the feet of the authors is an overreliance on certain companies. For instance, they use an interview with the management of Gaylord Palms Hotel and Resort in a few different chapters.

~ Thorough analysis is withheld at times. For instance, the authors, in the opinion of this reader, fail to sufficiently consider questions such as those that follow: Could these attempts to enhance employee engagement generate a higher sense of employee entitlement? Could it be that the best places to work are simply better hirers? Is it possible that the "best places to work" are better only in comparative terms, i.e., if the neighboring ship is skippered by the devil himself, then my ship, though it be commanded by Captain Bligh, appears to be the "best place to work." Furthermore, there is little acknowledgement of the fact that many employees surveyed probably had an "ax to grind."

If nothing else, Re-Engage is not boring. Indeed, the reader's mind should be stimulated by this book, and her preconceived notions should be challenged. Where it lacks scientific rigor, thorough analysis, and rich commentary, it compensates with penetrating questions, often implied, that test the reader's assumptions about employees and their engagement with the company. Re-Engage deserves a good rating, yet it falls well short of a business masterpiece.

A wake-up call for leaders and managers

Jack Seward is a Japan area-and-language specialist whose intimate involvement with Japanese extends over half a century. He has taught college-level courses in Japanese and is the author of many books on the people and country where he lived for 25 years.

My first serious textbook and still my favorite

I will only say that after studying on my own for two years, and now completing my first year at school, it is this book I turn to for inspiration as well as condensed facts and grammatical sidelights. The key here is that Seward teaches Japanese out of pure ENJOYMENT, not a stale sense of 'I must learn it for the upcoming business meeting' which plagues all too many 'standard' beginning texts. In social situations, Seward's hilarious bunkei have provoked laughs and discussion amoung students and teachers alike - and some are surprisingly useful - "Get that stinky thing out of here quickly", for example (ever been near a Japanese kitchen when daikon is being boiled and you'll know what I mean!). This is a great textbook; a thorough introduction, a detailed review, and a funny ice breaker all in one. I own about thirty instructional texts on Japanese, and this is easily in the top five.

An invaluable book.

Jack Seward presents the Japanese language in one of the most interesting ways I have seen. Sometimes language books prove to be quite a chore to get through, even if one does have a passion for the language. However, Seward is a natural teacher, and does so in the best way: by conveying a natural desire what is being taught. This book also teaches the hiragana, katakana, and about 50 of the most useful kanji as well. Seward's examples are also very interesting - he avoids mundane example sentences such as 'Hiroshi has a cat', etc. Some of his sentences are easy to memorize due to their odd nature: 'I intend to go to your funeral and dance.' for example. However, Seward mentions that this book is only the first of many he will publish of this nature. This book was printed in 1991, about seven years ago from this review. Hopefully he has not changed his mind since then, as I eagerly await his next title.

Learning Japanese? This is the book to get

The author clearly has a passion for the language and culture -- and he's been at it for quite some time. When you sit down to read Jack Seward's Easy Japanese, you really feel like he's sitting across the table from you, talking to you. And you should listen.

Mr. Seward will make sure you don't make a fool of yourself when you attempt to speak Japanese. There are little details -- but very important details -- he goes through before even beginning with the language.

What I've found most useful with Easy Japanese is the way he explains the why's. Japanese is full of little quirks you simply need to know about.

I was listening to how-to Japanese CD's and reading two how-to Japanese books at the same time. One of them is Easy Japanese. I took note how the other two would have me say this or say that and not explain why in the world that "u" is silent! Or why that "n" is it's own sylable. Easy Japanese does.

I haven't finished the book yet, so I can't tell you how complete it is, or what the final results are. But I can say now is that Easy Japanese belongs in your Japanese language toolbox without a doubt.

Too many incorrect answers in the back of the book

There are far too many incorrect answers in the back of the book and, in at least once case, misnumbered problems that don't match up with the back of the book. Frustrating, particularly when trying to figure out why something was "wrong" that really wasn't. I'm tempted to write McGraw-Hill, but it's easier to just not buy any more of its workbooks.

Despite suggestions to the contrary, no audio included or, evidently, available!

I recently purchased this book to learn Spanish for an upcoming trip to Latin America. Both the Amazon description and the book cover suggest that the book includes a CD, or at least that audio is available separately. But the book does NOT include a CD, and no CD appears to be available on the publisher's website. Here's a selection of some of the statements about audio material from the book's jacket and introductory material:

"This new edition has...complete audio support (available separately--MP3 compatible). [back cover]"

"Thanks...to Radio Mar FM...for use of material on the recording that accompanies this book. [Acknowledgements]"

"This course covers all four of the basic skills--listening and speaking, reading and writing. If you are working on your own, the audio recording will be all the more important, as it will provide you with the essential opportunity to list to the Spanish.... You should therefore try to obtain a copy of the recording if you haven't already got one. [!!! Introduction, xxi]"

"The course book contains...an audio recording (which you really need to have if you are going to get maximum benefit from the course. [Introduction, xxii]"

And so on....But there is no audio, and no apparent way of getting any audio, despite the fact that the there are repeated references in the actual lessons to e.g. "CD1, TR 06:16", with instructions to listen to the CD and repeat back the recorded material, etc.

Excellent review book. This helped me get through Pharmacology in pharmacy school

This book is very condensed. In doing so, it does not contain the detail of a textbook but it does have the take home points of a drug class. I read the chapter in this book before attending lectures. The chapters are straight and to the point with some helpful study tips. The material is organized in a easy to study from way. I highly recommend this book for people looking for a refresher or just seeing pharmacology for the first time.

The seller was also excellent. I could not have been happier with my purchase!

I love this book. It is not comprehensive, but it puts the drugs and classes into simple categories and generalizes things in a way that makes it easy to understand. With this basis of understanding, it's easier to then delve into the details of the drugs.

This book is not a reference -- you'd want Goodman and Gilman's for that. What this book does very well is take a drug class and in a few crisp, clear words tell you how it works and why it works that way.

Great Practice Book

My son, 9, has completed about one-third of the workbook. I think the workbook is great and effective. Practice really does matter. My son tends not to read the directions or the tip sheets so he often gets many of the answers wrong. So I always have to remind him to read the instructions and the tips and I have him correct his mistakes. There are many worksheets for each subject so there's plenty of practice and the explanations are simple and understandable. When my son completes this workbook I will purchase another for him to complete again to reinforce what the workbook teaches. I would definitely recommend this workbook to anyone.

A complete book

This is a great book. It will turn many of the conventional nuggets of wisdom about stock market on their head. It is a fairly complete book. For an individual trader it explains the investing process well. The 100 or so charts at the beginning of the book are very valuable and informative. CANSLIM is the right system to follow in my experience as well. Probably the most important piece of advice in the book is the advice to cut your losses short at 7-8% from your purchase price of a stock. Most recently 3 follow through days in the market have failed. This book however says that follow through days which mark the beginning of an uptrend in a stock market are reliable about 80% of the time. No book, no investing philosophy can be perfect, that's why one needs to cut the losses short so that one can live to fight another day.

This book with green cover is only slightly different from the one with orange cover. The differences are-
1) there is a quiz at the end to test your knowledge of CANSLIM
2) there are more recent charts of stocks which were hits and picked around March 2009 as part of William O'Neil's institutional service. These are stocks like Priceline, CERN, NFLX etc.
3) there is a CD attached to the back cover about a trial of one of their services.

All in all i don't think there is a need to get the latest book if you already have the book with orange cover.

Simply the BEST.

I have read over 150 books on stock trading and investing. I have reviewed them all here on Amazon. With this book I will now have read "How to make money in stocks" three times, reading the 2nd, 3rd, and now 4th edition. I have to say after reading this book at different stages in my trading journey, and having used its principles in real investing and trading I truly believe this is the #1 stock trading/investing book out there. I myself have used the principles of this book to average over a 20% return in my 401K from 2003 to 2007 and then like some of the smart readers of O'Neil's newspaper went to cash in January 2008 completely sidestepping the financial meltdown thanks to his principles. Author William O'Neil is the modern day predecessor of the greatest trading legends, Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darvas, Gerald Loeb, and Bernard Baruch. From the investing results of his proteges Gil Morales and Chis Kacher with their accumulative 18,000% return during the boom years that they document in "Trade like an O'Neil Disciple" he is likely the greatest living pure stock trader in the world. William O'Neil also runs O'Neil and Company and advises some of the world's top money mangers. O'Neil is also publisher of the Investor's Business Daily newspaper which he subsidizes because it is not profitable. (I think he publishes it for himself, all of his other businesses are profitable.)
At the beginning of the book you will see the price charts of the greatest winning stocks of the past 100 years. They are marked with notes to show you what proper bases look like and what a stock looks like coming out of a cup with handle formation. You will see the difference between a strong chart and a weak chart. It is very interesting to see what a climax top looks like right when a stock runs out of buyers and then investors sell in a panic. How the 50 day moving average relates to a chart along with the general market is also very educational.
The book lays out both excellent fundamental reasons for buying growth stocks using the CAN-SLIM method along with the rules on when to buy them. It also advises to cut all losses to no more than a maximum of 7% to 8%, and to prepare to take profits when you are up 20% to 25% in a winner. The key is to cut the loser when it starts failing to make new highs out of a chart cup with handle formation, and also let a winner run and do not sell it unless it pulls back sharply or it runs to high to fast and fails to hold the new highs with a climax top formation.
The CAN SLIM method is based on a stock having these fundamental criteria:
C-Current quarterly earnings per share should be up a major percentage-25% to 50% minimum-over the same quarter the previous year.

A-Annual earnings growth rates of 25% to 50%.

N-New products,new services or new management along with new price highs.

S- Supply and demand:big volume demand for the stock at key points.

L- Buy only the leading stock in the top industry groups.

I-Only buy stocks with some institutional sponsorship.

M-Only buy into an up trending market.

The book covers each of these areas in great detail. This deluxe edition of the book also has a free month of eIBD, an action plan DVD, and admission to a three hour IBD investing workshop. You will understand the CAN SLIM system after reading this book. This system was built after studying the greatest winning stocks of the past 100 years both their fundamentals and technicals. This book is a wealth of information. It is not based on anyone's ego, beliefs, or predictions. William O'Neil has turned making money in stocks into a science. AAII's independent study showed the CAN SLIM method was #1 of many systems tested from 1998 to 2009 with an average 35.3% annual and cumulative 2,763% return.
The only thing I disagree with in this book is O'Neil suggesting buying and holding stock mutual funds for 15 or 20 year time horizons because unlike stocks they do come back and history has shown 10 year holding periods are almost always a win. Studies have shown you can double your returns in a stock index by simply selling when it crosses down through its 200 day moving average and only buying back when it crosses back above the 200 day moving average. I could not watch my mutual fund's value melt away and do nothing, they do track the market very closely. I do not understand why O'Neil would put that in his book after the carnage of 2000 and 2008. I mentally can not deal with such large losses I go to cash from mutual funds in recessions and down trends. The book could have also gone a little deeper into the psychology of investing/trading, most traders and investors have huge problems cutting their losses, letting their winners run, and sometimes even pulling the trigger to buy the stock. I would love to have had a chapter on O'Neil's thoughts on trading psychology.
Regardless, in my opinion the #1 book on investing/trading on the market today.

Basically HowTMMIS Ed. 5... but not worth getting if you have Ed. 4

William O'Neil's books are an essential part of any investor's or trader's library. Seriously, even if you don't buy into his philosophy, what he says in these books will help you since he tells you the rules of the market. I (and many other traders) have made a lot of money using his method.

The only difference between this book (basically, 5th Edition) and the 4th edition (orange cover) is the "Bonus Chapter" at the end - 45 pages of test charts and questions. In my opinion, not worth buying if you already own the 4th Edition. Yes, the DVD is also included, but it's only maybe 15 minutes long and tells you how to use their newspaper and site. Once again, not worth paying extra for... I'm sure their investor.com site has a similar video available. The 4th/5th edition include several additions over the prior editions, and I highly recommend buying one of them to replace the 1st-3rd edition books.

When I started learning O'Neil's strategy in 1993, there was only the newspaper. Then, he added one seminar ($800), which I took in 1999 and which helped me understand his system and make (and keep) 300% in 6 months (9/1999-3/2000). Today, there are so many options to learn... Investors.com, his several books, several different levels of seminars, Meetup user groups, etc. Ironically, this book pretty much covers everything that's taught through the other mediums - you just need to read it carefully and thoroughly and repeatedly. From what people have told me, the one medium which teaches skills not mentioned in the book is the Chart reading seminar ($3000), where you learn advanced chart reading skills.

Learning to trade using CANSLIM (i.e. the O'Neil method) does changes your life, but you need to be ready to spend several years to learn the skill.
