Hastily put together, things not explained well
By Gadgester
Like many other titles in the "All About" series, this book is *not* about how to do things, but rather a perfunctory introduction to the topic at hand. Everything is discussed in general terms, with hypothetical examples used in the simpliest manners.

The biggest problem with the book as a sort of a primer is, it just does a very poor job at explaining all the different things involved in high-frequency trading, from the actual roles (profit and otherwise) of the exchanges to examples of broker-dealers and market-makers to why certain conditions exist for high-frequency trading. Sometimes the author takes the reader to be a "fool" who has to be explained the most basic concepts in finance, yet other times he assumes the reader is familiar with certain esoteric concepts.

For example, here's an excerpt from the only place where VWAP is mentioned: "For example, in our 1.00 x 1.10 market, a broker may guarantee an execution at $1.05 or $1.06 or some other midmarket price to their customer, confident he can use strategies like our investor strategies to trade at that price." Huh? What customer? What investor strategies? What is this "guarantee"? How is it achieved? No explanation before or after.

The book is filled with typos, some of which concern the numbers in an order book and which can throw the reader off. It's obvious the book was hastily written and edited.

In the end, the book does a poor job explaining exactly what high-frequency trading does and how (even in general terms) high-frequency traders make money. In a book that claims to be "all about" the topic, it falls far short of that goal.

Great work illuminating a complex topic!
By M. Pierce
Durbin's work provides a great foundation to better understand the exciting and exotic world of high frequency trading (HFT). In addition, for you IT fans (like me), he provides an interesting description of the IT requirements to build a successful HFT platform. Finally, in the last section of the book, Durbin covers some of the commonly debated pros and cons of HFT and its affect on market quality.

Durbin readily admits throughout the work that he isn't advertising the book as the 'secret sauce' to HFT. But that's ok: as an experienced industry player in the area of institutional trading on the 'buyside', you're getting a lot of bang for your buck and would offer that he is outlining the issues correctly and all the while keeping the reader engaged in the material. Did I need to read this book? Nope, this is part of my day job, but I like the topic and found little nuggets along the way that made it worth the read. Also, there is a whole section on IT that I have not been directly exposed to which I really enjoyed.

Finally, Durbin's background at Citadel, among other places, makes him a very credible author and in better postion to write a book on this topic than others I've seen around.

Bottom line? I think there is something in this book for everyone who is interested in the topic.

Not a practitioner's book
By R. Gardner
As a long-time quant trader / software engineer myself, I have to warn that this is not a practitioner's book. Another choice might be "Algorithmic Trading & DMA" by Barry Johnson.

I would re-title the book, "White Paper on Real Estate in 2011"
By Jennifer L.
As a beginner to the world of real estate investing, I found this book a realistic, down-to-earth perspective on the real estate market. It is a primer on the author's perspective that real estate is still a solid investment in 2011-2012, even with the economic meltdown still in progress. Although he is quick to point out is not nearly as easy to invest as it was in 2005 at the peak of the bubble.

I don't see this as much of a how-to book, however, Martinez's perspective on buying in 2011 is well-worth the purchase price if you're looking for a well-formed, thoughtful opinion of the market in general and why real estate is a solid investment. There is no how-to advice or steps to follow. 740 FICO score, 20% down payment required, non-owner-occupied investment properties now require 25% down, those requirements for funding were the extent of any how-to. What is most valuable is the concise, easily digestable explanation of the steps leading to the economic meltdown; investing now is smart because commercial real estate is the next shoe to drop due to shorter-term commercial loans maturing in coming years with the high likelihood that there won't be enough equity to support refinancing. Banks will be forced to address their commercial loans the same way they have had to address their lending practices with residential real estate and there will be foreclosures. He says that experts estimate that commercial loan deliquencies will peak in 2012.

"How To Make Money In Real Estate In The New Economy" is a bit of a departure from his last book, "2 Years to a Million in Real Estate." The title of that book is a misnomer as it seems more of a get-rich-quick scheme than the informational how-to I found it to be. That being said, if you're looking for a more in-depth explanation of HOW-TO, "2 years to a million" is a better book by Matthew Martinez for an explanation of real estate terms and ratios etc. This book is better for a realistic outlook on buying in 2011-12. I liked both books for different reasons. This book reads more like an informed op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal than a how to book, it is grounded with multiple stories from investors and that is why I find it so valuable... you won't get this information or perspective in a get-rich-quick book or the many Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad's Guide to Investing: What the Rich Invest in, That the Poor and the Middle Class Do Not! books that are more motivational than packed with useful information.

Martinez does not present any new how-to information here, he reiterates the tried and true foundations of real estate investing: 20% down, capital available for reserves, good credit score and conservative investing. This advice is a departure from the last book of pulling out equity on each purchase to fund the next; Admittedly, this is how he made his fortune in real estate, but over-leveraged financing is a relic from the past.

The value in this book comes from his perspective on why this is a great time to invest if you can find the capital for the down payment. "Investors who choose to align themselves on the side of prosperity will act before the media begin writing about the Great Recovery. After all, contrarian investors will have acquired much of the low-hanging real estate fruit in your farm area(chosen neighborhood for acquisitions) by the time the media decide to stick their necks out and publicly declare the end of the "Great Recession.""

The entire book is Martinez's well-thought out perspective on real estate with examples from history to support his assertions. He offers detailed reasons to underpin his observations and this makes it a compelling read since everyone else seems to be screaming to avoid real estate. If you have the same recurring thought that now may be a good time to invest, when everyone else is leaving the game, this is a great book to find out WHY that thought makes a lot of sense.

There are many stories from successful real estate investors and how they have changed their strategies since 2007 that are worth your time. This is a great read.

Don't count on "how-to" steps but rather a great perspective to reinforce your decision to pursue real estate investing even when it appears the rest of the world is running the other way. That's how people have made a lot of money throughout history... get in while the price is low, keep your debt low and make sure you're making money on the property as soon as you close, don't count on appreciation.

there was a bubble, now it's over - that's all this book says
By Susan Klefstad
Unfortunately, I wasted my money on the Kindle edition I can't return or resell. I am interested in investing in real estate, have no experience, so I'm looking to learn. This book doesn't teach you anything you don't already know if you read a paper, like the Wall Street Journal, and have the tiniest bit of common sense -- like don't buy a property for more than it's worth.

This book describes, over and over, how deals that were done during the bubble overleveraged with easy credit to pay inflated prices for assets, but now lending is tight. Well, duh. If you've been reading the Wall Street Journal the last few years, there's nothing new about this concept. There are numerous "case studies" or stories of people who avoided overleveraging, or else didn't avoid it...once again, if you read the paper, you've already read lots of stories like this. This book tells you things like don't pay too much for the property. Uh-huh. If you can't find a good deal for yourself to buy, instead you could work really hard to broker deals for other people, like the author did. Well, for me personally, if a deal isn't good enough investment for me, I'm not going to try to sell it to someone else.

For example, here's a quote:
"There is also a tremendous opportunity to acquire foreclosures at undervalued prices. However distressed investing will require extensive due diligence and research on your behalf to avoid overpaying in a market that's continuously evolving."

I thought I was doing research by buying this book, hoping to learn some of the gritty details of what to look for in distressed properties, how to value them, etc -- then this book tells me to be sure to do research. Uh, thanks.

Because lending is so tight, how do you finance a deal to get started? The author suggests -- get ready for these brilliant insights now from Chapter 20 -- that you either a) get money from friends or family, b) use your own savings, or 3) earn money in another business first, then invest it in real estate:

"If you don't have an extra $250,000 in your trust fund, you'll need to earn it before buying. This chapter introduces you to the notion of making money in another industry so that you can afford to buy real estate on your own."

The chapter then goes on to describe a "Case Study" of David, who made money selling carpet and futons to college students. I didn't buy this book because I want to start a business selling futons to college students. I want to know the inside details of how real estate markets work, and how prudent investors value properties. This book does not provide ANY information about these things. If you have been living under a rock the last few years, then this book will explain ad nauseum how there was a real estate bubble of easy lending and inflated property values which has since collapsed. If you already know this, you can skip this book.

not for rookie investors
By Martin Cortes
I have been wholesaling for 2 years and still consider myself a novice investor. I picked up this book with the intent to maybe pick up some tips on investing through wholesaling (flipping), buy and hold, etc. Instead most of the book it talks about why we are in a down market which everyone interested in real estate should know. It is mostly geared towards commercial real estate and experienced investors. Not for the average investor trying to come up.

Perfect for the beginner who wants a gentle introduction
    By Daniel Thombs
I've worked through quite a few beginner Old English grammar books, and I feel this one is the best for the absolute introduction. The book is designed in the newer style of both diving directly into passages, as well as only using text from official sources. The older style of outlining male noun declension, or strong verb type I declension then expecting rote memorization, is not found here. We learn a portion of a grammatical structure, see it in use with some gloss words, and then slowly expand. Every few chapters the completed block of inflections or pronouns is displayed for future reference. Additionally after every chapter, there are some exercises to complete which is a great help.

I'm mildly on the fence about the best learning style. Now that I've moved into Gothic, the book I'm using picks a single declension, some vocabulary and then has you work through a few pages of exercises. I think it comes down to where you are as a language learning. This book on Old English was perfect for knowing absolutely nothing about the subject (the Old English in 5-minutes intro sold me), but now that I'm comfortable with older language styles and all the inflections needed, I think I'd be frustrated by not getting all the pieces to the puzzle upfront. I'd also like some examples that perhaps illustrated the grammatical lesson in its various forms rather than finding examples in biblical text or the Chronicle. I know that using genuine Old English text is a good thing, but sometimes you need that weak feminine dative case shown even if it doesn't happen to exist for the given word.

    learning quickly
    By Marcus Montgomery
This seems like an excellent text. I'm in chapter five now, and I seem to be learning quickly. The author does a good job at hitting the key concepts to get you to learn to read old english quickly. i like that he does this by exclusively using texts written originally in old english in the middle ages, rather than modern reconstructions. as an added bonus, many of them are quite beautiful.

    This book is great
    By C. Scaffa
I am only about 25% through the book so far but I am enjoying it greatly. For someone who is pretty unfamiliar with Six Sigma initatives having a book that explains not only Six Sigma but how it can be used for sustainability goals is great. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in integrating Six Sigma and Sustainability.

    Sustainability Meets A Business Model
    By Richard Daniels
This book is filled with practical tools, templates, approaches and methods that will help any Six Sigma improvement team accelerate their learning and their results. With its unique focus on the opportunities to further global sustainability through the more efficient use of buildings and work spaces, the book is a blueprint for any company looking to both recapture resources and increase their contribution to the cause.

First and foremost, this is a book about business, about the concept of doing more and doing better with less, of better serving customers and of building a brand that everyone in the world can admire and respect. The business goals are put front and center and are ultimately the driving wheel behind any sustainability effort.

The authors have left nothing out, and clearly intended this book to be used as a guide for others in making a larger contribution to the broader goals of sustainability. The chapter on Stakeholder Engagement is worth the price of the book all by itself, not only as it relates to efficient building management but also as it relates to sustaining any significant change effort in any organization. Combined with the detailed review of Business Case development, these two chapters form the foundation for any successful change initiative.

The authors also provide an insightful overview of the role of collaborative management in any significant change, and provide case studies and examples to magnify the keys to making this happen. A memorable set of core principles are woven throughout the text, so instead of a laundry list of things that must be done, the reader is given a memorable recipe of the things that matter most.

A critical point that the authors make sums up their purpose and intent - the greenest building you can attain is the one you don't build. This highlights the need for improved strategies and methods for improving existing facilities, which are all delivered page by page.

Great roadmap for guiding corporate sustainability practices
    By craig_bloomfield
This is a great book because it provides real solutions to a problem plaguing most of the corporate world: following through on their "commitment to sustainability".

Back in 2005-2007 CEOs made big promises on how much they would reduce their carbon footprint and engage in sustainable practices, but most of them didn't have the faintest idea how to make good on these promises--the statements were just for show. Over the past five years, we've learned sustainability can lead to benefits like employee productivity and risk mitigation, and a lot of C-level execs now recognize that they should put a real strategy in place to improve their bottom line, not just as a PR stunt. But they don't know how to do it, it costs too much, it can't be measured, they have other priorities, etc. So not much has really changed.

What makes Six Sigma Sustainability great is that it walks you through the development and execution of a real strategy focused on company-wide engagement, measurement and continuous improvement. It's obvious that these guys actually work in the trenches on this stuff and have had some success helping companies.

I've been exposed to Six Sigma before and it can be kind of mind-numbing, but when you apply it to corporate sustainability this way it makes a lot of sense and is not difficult to follow. If you're not a fan of Six Sigma, it helps to think of it generically as "process improvement." Corporate sustainability is a process in need of improvement for sure -- carbon measurement by itself is a fairly involved process and it's just one piece of the puzzle. This book can really put a company on the right course.

This book needs a reboot with a ruthless editor
    By Richard Bejtlich
Critical reviews are my least favorite aspect of my Amazon experience, but I believe readers expect me to be honest with them. Gray Hat Hacking, 3rd Ed (GHH3E) has a lot of potential, but it needs a reboot and a ruthless editor. I read and reviewed the original edition 6 1/2 years ago but skipped the 2nd Ed. This 3rd Ed (published in Jan 2011) features several exceptionally talented authors (such as Allen Harper and Chris Eagle), so my expectations remained high. Unfortunately, after finishing the book I had collected a pile of notes that I will try to transform into constructive commentary for a 4th Ed, which I would enjoy seeing!

The GHH team needs to revisit first principles and decide just what it is trying to accomplish. I recommend the authors ditch the first three chapters, or radically concentrate on the ethical disclosure debate. The rest of the so-called legal material reads like a brain dump, almost like a blog post that never finishes. In some cases the authors of the sections stray from their topic, such as the "Vendors Paying More Attention" section on p 71. Cut it out! Be ruthless! Similarly, the section on social engineering (ch 4) needs a major overhaul if it is to survive into the next edition.

Other chapters have issues. Ch 7, on BackTrack, is basically just installation instructions. Ch 17 only devotes 17 pages to Web app security; either remove it or add substantially to the material. Ch 18 is supposed to be about VoIP, but it's mainly a discussion of the VoIPER tool. Ch 19 is supposed to be about SCADA attacks, but it's really just talk of the Autodafe and TFTPFuzz tools. In ch 28, the author doesn't explain how Nepenthes acquires a malware sample, besides letting it run on a cable network for a few weeks. Having deployed Nepenthes I know how it works, but I expect a reader who wants to learn about Nepenthes would want to understand it based on the text he or she bought.

The organization of the book needs an overhaul too. It seems to promote a progress of less complicated to more complicated, but at this point it needs to be reconstructed in a fourth edition. Why does Part IV, Vulnerability Analysis, follow Part III, Exploiting? Doesn't exploiting require doing vulnerability analysis? In other cases, material seems redundant. Ch 28 and ch 29 cover similar material but are likely by different authors; I recommend combining them and dropping duplicate material.

For me, some of the chapters are on the right track and could lead the fourth edition to a more solid foundation. I recommend expanding Ch 16 (featuring nice coverage of a .pdf exploit). I would really like to see a chapter or more on Javascript for malicious purposes. Overall, I think the GHH team could be very successful if they looked for topics not covered in other books, and addressed those issues in GHH4E. Why try to summarize coding in C, assembly, Python, etc., into a chapter, when other subjects (like Javascript for the hacker/analyst) aren't really explained in any other book? Similarly, it's probably not necessary to cover social engineering, BackTrack, or Metasploit now that individual books are devoted to those concepts.

There's a lot of good technical information in GHH3E, but I don't see myself recommending it to analysts in a CIRT or similar group. I think if the book rebooted with a focus on specialized material not found elsewhere, leveraging the talents of people like Harper and Allen, GHH4E would be THE book to buy on those topics.

    "Gray" sums it up nicely
    By SenseiC
I had this as a supporting text along with "legend" (William Stallings) "Internetworking with TCP/IP" text for a graduate course on Advanced Networks and Network Security.

I agree with many of the reviews that several of the chapters needed some more significant editorial review just to deliver topics in a clear and concise manner. That said I also completely disagree with the "for white hats by white hats" characterization. The book offers reasonably good overviews of numerous topics plus realistic examples of how most penetration attempts unfold. It also offers an appropriate discussion without "rendering judgement" about the nuances and conflicting interests surrounding defect disclosures and/or remediation (patches).

While versions constantly evolve, GHH would do well to include/add/expand on Linux "pen testing" distributions (BackTrack, Network Security Toolkit, security tools distribution, etc.), but not really spend much time on the mundane (installing, Live images, etc.) and more on which tools prove the most effective (The powers Metasploit can unleash should scare just about anyone!).

I also find it somewhat surprising with the pervasiveness of malware that only two chapters of the book focus on malware. Likewise I find it amazing that the book has a "one-chapter 'chat' on programming" (so often poor code exposes/provides the exploitation vector), but doesn't even mention CWE (Common Weakness Enumeration), etc. except as a footnote/reference.

As always the "Kindle edition" of a book leaves much to desire (especially the PC/Tablet "version" of the reader software). Someday someone at Amazon will look at an well-designed Adobe PDF and say, "Oh! I get it."

    SenseiC bows out.

Excellent, relevant book that is no fluff
    By Jason Z.
I just got done reading this book and I was quite impressed. I've read many other books on the same subjects and this handbook delivers the material without all the fluff. It shows the most popular (some of the most effective) tools and how they are used. I really love Ch. 6 about the "Insider Attacks" as it shows from start to finish how an attacker could leverage themselves as a domain admin with relative ease. While there are books alone written for each chapter this handbook sums each chapter up in a clear concise way especially if you are already a bit familiar with the tools and techniques. I would say that this book isn't written for a novice or someone who hasn't already have great understand of basic networking (TCP/IP) or systems experience.

There are excellent chapters about exploits, shellcodes and how to write and use them as well as some excellent examples of each. As with any book like this it is important to practice the techniques in a lab to have the info "stick". Overall, one of the more interesting books I've read that is not like the typical chapters you would see in a book related to becoming a "Certified Ethical Hacker".

    Response to Mr.Clark
    By Harprit S. Sandhu
First let me thank Mr. Clark for his kind words.

Personally, I am livid about the diagrams.

I have had a scathing correspondence with McGraw Hill as regards the quality of the circuits and diagrams provided in the book. I personally did all the drawings so all they had to do was to put them in place at the right size. In some cases, the drawings are not even the full width of the printed page. I think their decisions in this matter are inexcusable. (The drawings are readable enough but they need to be much larger and easier to read.)

McGraw Hill have promised to place all the drawings on their web site to cover for this but of course that is not the same as getting it right in the first place.

    My sincerest apologies.

The best Propeller Book to start
    By Valerie J. Dickenson
This book was flat out, amazing. I've been tinkering with the propeller for a few months and this book cleared up so many issues for me. It even cleared up issues I didn't realize i had ! The code is well laid out and the projects have just the right amount of complexity to hold your interest but maintaining the incremental build nature. I was able to go back and recode some of my projects, using what I learned immediately. The Propeller chip is an great development platform, the contributors on the object exchange made the hardware platform easy, and this book ties it all together in a well thought out, well executed, clear and concise approach.

Even if you are experienced with the Propeller, this book is just great.

Programming with Propeller with Spin by Harprit S. Sandhu
    By John Pyle
I have been into programming for a short time, and therefore, I am looking for as much material that I can find. Just starting with Spin on the Prop, I had looked at another book, or two and found that this one is exactly the book I need to get a good foothold on my study of Spin. There are a couple of mistakes with schematics, but nothing that cannot be easily overcome, if you have some understanding of electronics. All in all, I recommend Mr. Sandhu's book to anyone that needs more info for the Propeller, from a "newbie" to Professional programmers--Excellent.

Mr. Sandhu has an ERRATA link on the Encodergeek homepage that clears up the FEW mistakes in schematics, and verbage. VERY well done!!

A concise full-color review of the mechanisms of blood diseases and disorders – based on a Harvard Medical School hematology course

    2015 Doody's Core Title!

    4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!

"This is a superb book. Deceptively small, yet packs a wallop. The emphasis on principles instead of practice is welcome....The text is clear, concise, and surprisingly approachable for what could have been a very dense and dry discussion. I could not put this book down and read it entirely in one sitting. When was the last time anyone found a hematology textbook so riveting?"--Doody's Review Service

Hematological Pathophysiology is a well-illustrated, easy-to-absorb introduction to the physiological principles underlying the regulation and function of blood cells and hemostasis, as well as the pathophysiologic mechanisms responsible for the development of blood disorders. Featuring a strong emphasis on key principles, the book covers diagnosis and management primarily within a framework of pathogenesis.

Authored by world-renowned clinician/educators at Harvard Medical School, Hematological Pathophysiology features content and organization based on a hematology course offered to second year students at that school. The book is logically divided into four sections: Anemias and Disorders of the Red Blood Cell, Disorders of Hemostasis and Thrombosis, Disorders of Leukocytes, and Transfusion Medicine; it opens with an important overview of blood and hematopoietic tissues.

    Very well written book
    By Prasanna Ramachandran
This is the first edition of the book, closely modeled after the Hem/Onc syllabus at Harvard Medical School. The authors have done a phenomenal job for a first edition. The book is small, nicely organized, the writing is excellent, and it makes for easy reading (sufficient detail, not overwhelming but not glossing over important points either). My guess is this is one of those books you read once and remember the content years later. We've used it for our Hem/Onc class, and my classmates and I were very impressed. Hem/Onc is no joke, and could easily get out of hand. This book was instrumental in my solid understanding of the foundations.

My only complaint would be against some of the pictures (not the pathology pics, but the illustrations of concepts). Some of the illustrations aren't very intuitive, and the labeling isn't sufficient. Moreover, all images can use more elaboration, rather that just saying "refer to text".

Overall, a very solid book. Can't go wrong with it.

I was taking a hematology class for my CLS (major, the professor was known to be hard, I bought this book in the summer and learned all the charts in it (the book is small and a fast read, it tell you was you need to know for the test). I highly recommend this as a pre-read, it help you pick out what is important in lecture and the think hematology book.
