This book has ISSUES, no CAT tests, and sets wrong expectations
    By GMAT Club (Expert)
I prefer to ignore books that are not the best or have issues instead of writing negative reviews but I feel I need to give a word of warning to a few test takers. However, I won't bash the book; instead I will just point out issues it has and hopefully this will result into a better preparation for you with or without this book.

    ....ISSUES....
    1. LACK OF CONTENT. This is probably the shortest GMAT Book I have seen - only 182 pages are dedicated to the GMAT overview and that includes everything (AWA, Quant, Verbal, practice questions, etc)

    2. WEAK STRATEGIES. The real test for a good GMAT Book is the CR/RC strategies it provides since these sections are hard to prepare for and only a consistent and solid strategy is what can help. This book has strategies that are correct and good but are too general to make a difference

    3. FEW PRACTICE QUESTIONS. As mentioned above 182 pages are dedicated to the GMAT and are inclusive of practice problems/questions. There are 4 tests included in the book (which take half of the pages).

    4. PAPER TESTS. There are 4 in the book, which offsets the lack of practice questions but at the same time there is a big issue with paper tests - the fact that they are on paper, not adaptive, and do not provide you with a GMAT score, not even an approximate one.

    5. COMPUTER ADAPTIVE TESTS. This book does not come with any. The online tests referred to are not adaptive.

    6. The 2010 and 2011 editions are pretty much identical with exception of 5 vs 4 tests in the book (there are different software editions too but I have not been able to find any differences)

    7. One final issue is that with only 182 pages of instructions and gmat exercises, the book positions GMAT as an easy tests that does not require much preparation - watch out. It is not easy!

P.S. The book says there are 2 tests avaiable online but I was able to find only one; all references online were to the 2010 book, so perhaps the website has not been updated yet, but the test is not to be found.

Hope you find this review helpful.

Low quality, very different from the official guide
    By Kili
I got this one after finishing the official guide, hoping to get more computer-based practice, but the book was a disappointment.

    1. The practice problems in the book are quite different from the official guide, in the way how the questions are constructed.

    2. Practice sets in the CD-ROM are of extremely low quality. While reviewing my results of the first practice set, I found 5 questions in the verbal section that they marked the wrong answer. For example, I picked E, they marked it wrong in the result and put the check mark on option B, but at the same time in the explanation stated "So E is the correct answer".

    3. Many repeated questions in the math session across the 4 computer-based practice. I moved to the 2nd practice set and saw at least 5 to 6 questions that were identical as in the 1st practice set that I just finished.

I hesitate to continue using the book given its poor quality, which could bring an extremely low ROI to your study time.

For those stuck on paper, this is not that bad
    By Scrapple8
McGraw-Hill's GMAT 2011 Edition contains 4 practice tests on paper. It is a full-service guide, covering all sections of the exam, including Quantitative and Verbal sections as well as the essays. It will be somewhat out of date after 6/6/2012, when ACT replaces the Analysis of an Issue prompt with Integrated Reasoning questions.

Nevertheless, there will be some reason to use this book after the Next Generation GMAT is introduced. The verbal section is actually encouraging: after you read the Chapters, you will find that their strategies make sense. The mathematical sections introduce most of the concepts required for the exam, with the notable omission of word problems. There was decent coverage of probability and statistics that you might want to review even if you have studied the mathematical concepts elsewhere.

Just as the quantitative section offers an insufficient tutorial, so too does the verbal. In particular, you will probably want to brush up on the rules of grammar before reading the Sentence Correction chapter. Another comment is that the critical reasoning questions seem less obtuse, or more straightforward, than other GMAT preparation materials.

A reader should be aware that the practice exams are not representative of the real GMAT exams. The Reading Comprehension questions on the exam offer four passages, with 3-4 questions each. Here, there are only two passages with 7 questions each. You may find that you are completing the Verbal questions in the required 75 minutes when you take a McGraw-Hill practice exam, but then you run out of time when taking a representative exam. Some Reading Comprehension passages can be long, complicated, and time consuming.

Still, it is a case of having four seats in the rafters to a good game, versus waiting for magic. You should do ten practice exams before taking the test. Most of these questions are representative, but you ought to approach your results with some skepticism.

In any event, these practice exams should not be the last practice exams that you do before taking the real exam. You want to practice the same type of Verbal questions that you will have on the exam.
