Optimization can be an intimidating word, at least for business executives. I wanted to explain in language they could understand--and that language begins with the kind of bottom-line results you can achieve--what Optimization is, what it uniquely adds to an organization's decision-making capability, and how they can go about exploiting its potential.

How can executives improve their game using Optimization to make decisions? Since I write for an executive audience, my focus is on relating the experiences of a forward- thinking breed of executives who have begun to distance their companies from competitors by deploying Optimization to make complex judgments about the best way to deploy assets.

Biggest challenge facing executives who are considering acquiring Optimization capability?  For one, getting over Optimization fright--the notion that Optimization is too complicated and is strictly for software geeks. In fact, executives need not--and should not--immerse themselves in the technical details. A basic understanding of the principals of Optimization and the kinds of problems it can solve is what's important. One other challenge: to convince senior executives that Optimization is not a substitute for their decision-making responsibilities, but a way for them to harness their judgment and experience, along with massive amounts of data, to make better decisions.

Most significant challenge in writing The Optimization Edge?  Telling, accurately and fairly, the stories of both client and nonclient companies that appear in the book, such as Amazon, McDonald's, SAS, UPS, and many others, was a challenge. A Fascinating Look at Optimization

In a number of businesses, many different factors are converging which will make optimization more and more important. Some of the factors are 1) the sheer size of many businesses 2) the competitive pressures on prices which means that businesses must deliver better, faster and cheaper 3) the number of possible decisions that workers need to make and speed with which they need to make them 4) The ever increasing amount of data serving as input for decisions and 5) the increase in computing power at ever decreasing cost.

Steve Sashihara, the author provides the following definition, "Optimization is a decision-making process and a set of related tools that employs mathematics, algorithms, and computer software not only to sort and organize data, but to use that date to make recommendations faster and better than humans can."

The book starts out tracing the history of Optimization. This is a very interesting look at the history of decision making and how scientists were trying to introduce Optimization long before there was sufficient computing power to make it work. While it helps to have a historical perspective on Optimization, it is not crucial to your understanding the current state of the art.

Next Mr. Sashihara gets into what I found was the real meat of the book - Optimization in practice. This is real world case studies of Optimization in action. Here he tells how numerous companies - McDonalds, Intel, Marriott, UPS, Amazon, ArgentAir (a time share executive jet company) and others used Optimization to dramatically improve decision making. This section describes what each company was doing, what the bottlenecks were and how they used computer software to collect and sort through data and assist employees to make better decisions than they were making prior to introducing Optimization. The results for each company were impressive, the savings were significant.

Next Mr. Sashihara gives some guidelines on Optimization - that is how to decide if Optimization might work for your organization. He also shares some of the problems companies face in introducing Optimization into their organization.

In the final chapter he looks ahead to what the future holds for Optimization.

Mr. Sashihara is CEO of Princeton Consultants, a company which helps clients with Optimization. A few of the case studies are based on the work of Princeton Consultants and in the section on evaluating and implementing Optimization, he writes from the perspective of Princeton Consultants. In my opinion this strengthens the book. Very few companies would have the in-house capabilities to implement an Optimization program.

The book is well written and easy to read. While the subject matter is highly complex, this book is written for the executive who wants to understand in general terms what Optimization is and how it could help his/her organization. The book stays away from discussing the specifics of software development or the underlying math involved in the algorithms.

If your company has a high volume of repetitive transactions with numerous factors influencing different options, you would do well to read this book. You will get a very clear idea of what Optimization is all about and if it might help your business do a better job of managing assets and making better decisions.

A break in the language barrier

Steve's Optimization Edge finally breaks the language barrier between the quant, the analyst, the "numbers guy" and the executive, the decision maker, the person in charge and in control. Without threatening either, Steve successfully takes on both sides: the quant who wants his "black-box" solution accepted without revealing how he got it in a way others can understand, and the executive who places too much risk on relying on his or her own wisdom and intuition, and views the facts and the data as competition to their personal judgment and control. Steve shows the quant and the executive they both can be more successful, more effective, more contributing to the value of the organization. Through the clear and simple explanations in The Optimization Edge, Steve bridges the gap between the numbers and the wisdom. I have been working (more like fighting) in the world of helping decision makers make better decisions through data, analysis and facts for 30 years. Steve brings a new language and new hope to my work. Other popular books on the value of data and other books on the value of intution need to be coupled with The Optimization Edge. It's a must read for B-school executive hopefuls. It's an easy read for the executive who left numbers behind in fourth-grade math. It's a communication, customer-service tutorial for the quant who still can't see why others can't see what they can see in numbers. All of today's advances in data, business intelligence and analytics won't find a place at the decision-making table until it finds a language that connects with the everyday decision maker. Steve's book provides that language. It's the language of optimization.
