About the Author
Jerome Rosenberg, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also the author of Schaum’s Outline of Beginning Chemistry. Lawrence Epstein, Ph.D. is a retired Professor of General Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. He also co-authored Schaum’s Outline of Beginning Chemistry. Peter Krieger, Ed.D is a Professor of Natural Sciences at Palm Beach Community College where he also serves as Chairperson of the Chemistry/Physics department. He is the author of several instructor’s manuals in chemistry as well as Understanding General Chemistry (Simon and Schuster) published in 1997.

Authors of confusion in the realm of chemistry

I purchased this book to have a source on hand for a quick review of the basic principles of general chemistry. I presumed that, since this book is now in its second edition, any errata would have been corrected. Evidently, neither the authors nor the publisher took the time to proofread this text prior to its printing.
As a result, the term molarity was used in place of molality (two distinctly different concepts/quantities) in a crucial formula in this text.
Boyle's law is incorrectly defined.
The authors make a big deal out of other texts using the term "weight" instead of "mass", stating that they will only use the correct term, "mass". They turn around a few pages later and use the term "weight" where it clearly should have been "mass".
The authors tend to break away from other conventions in their symbology for various units and their presentation of formulae.
I cannot recommend this text, as it would be a continual source of confusion and frustration for the student of chemistry.
It is my hope that, in the future, publishers and authors will take the time to proofread their manuscripts before releasing them for printing. This little investment of their time would be of great worth in communicating the valuable principles of science to the next generation in an enjoyable manner that promotes further study.

Dense content, "Mostly" right

I prefer books that are content dense. I don't need splashy sidebars or pretty pictures. I want information in the text in a linear and logical progression. I despise stopping mid-narrative to dig through a 4-color "Exploring the idea" presentation in a completely different voice and format than the text.
In this regard, this book is 5 stars.
This book has a number of unfortunate errors in the text, and the publisher doesn't seem to publish errata.
In this regard, the book is 1 star.
I suggest supplementing and error checking with a used College Chem book.
