Elizabeth Scurfield was until recently Chair of Modern Languages at the University of Westminster, where she was a founder member of the Chinese section. She has more than 30 years' experience of teaching Chinese to beginners.

Excellent book!

Im not officially studying Mandarin yet but I bought this book a few months ago, and ive been flirting with the language since then.
this book is laid out nice and intuitively and sectioned nicely, breaking up dialogues, vocab, grammar, and culture into little bite size pieces making them easy to understand... one of the things I like best about this book is that it uses the script and there is a gradual introduction to the characters about half way in... it comes with two audio CDs which takes away the pain of trying to pronounce the letters of the pinyin by reading alone... its a pretty good size course, 22 chapters which provide plenty of conversation know how, and if by finishing the book you are able to understand most of it, you should find yourself using Mandarin at about an intermediate level, and you should be able to travel Mandarin areas confidently
DO NOT USE THIS COURSE ALONE! part of language learning is a cycle between learning and using. this is the learning cycle, for using, I highly recommend finding Mandarin chatrooms and conversing with natives either in person or via skype... also, adding a few other courses for the learning cycle is not a bad thing either... I also like to use Assimil and Pimsleur courses... between these courses, where one is weak most likely one of the others is strong in that area

A good introduction, but better if used with other books

This book is another quality Teach Yourself for languages. The grammar points are clear, the vocabulary is slowly built upon, and there is a beginning guide to correctly pronouncing words from the pinyin. The audio is also clearly recorded and clearly enunciated (though some of the track placements are slightly odd. Some practice exercises are listed before the main dialogue, which must sometimes be waited for)
Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) itself is relatively simple for a native English speaker. The grammar is easy to learn and the sounds and vocabulary can be acquired with time. Even the tones will come if one practices and is patient. The most difficult aspect is the writing; I feel this should be learned early on, as one must be able to write, distinguish, and recognize a large number of characters.
The largest issue I take with the title is the lack of characters. Though the pinyin is used in the dialogues from the first chapter, the actual Hanzi characters (simplified) are not introduced until approximately the mid-point of the book (and the small ending dictionary does not include the characters besides the pinyin). Teach Yourself Chinese is a good title overall, though I recommend that one also buys a writing guide with--to get an early start.

Good if Chinese isn't your first foreign language

I've been learning Mandarin on and off for about 3 years now, and I've tried nearly every course on the market. This was the first course I started with and if I had to start over again, I would probably use another slower course but this one also has it's merits.
The main problem with the book is that it just goes way too fast. Each chapter will cover dozens of new words and many new grammar points. 1 chapter in this book probably covers the same amount of material that another course will cover over 3 or so chapters. On one hand, this means that an experienced language learner could make very rapid progress using this book, but if Mandarin is the first foreign language you are learning, as it was for me, this will likely be overwhelming and will actually hinder your progress.
An important part of language learning is repetition and review, and this book has hardly any. After only a few dozen pages, the book will start introducing complex sentences, discussing family life and reviewing restaurants. Although the book has good exercises, there are simply not enough to really absorb the material. Again, if you have experience with language learning, or a tutor, you can find ways to practice the material on your own, but for someone that's never done this kind of this before, there's the risk that they will decide that it's simply too difficult to learn Chinese and give up.
Another problem is the audio recordings. They are very slow and clear, which at first may seem like a good thing, but the problem is they are too slow and too clear: Nobody actually talks that slowly and clearly, so even if you can understand the recordings perfectly, you will likely still not be able to understand actual Chinese speakers.
On the positive side, the grammar explanations are very clear and the cultural notes are useful and interesting. If I was going to start learning Chinese all over again, I might use this course on the side but the best courses I have tried are Assimil, remembr(dot)it for learning characters, Chinesepod for listening, and the Chinese grammar wiki, along with the perapera extension for firefox (note: I'm not being paid by any of these companies). Beside this, you need to spend thousands of hours talking with native speakers and listening to native movies, tv, news, etc... For the very patient, there is a free comprehensive audio course produced by the US Foreign Language Institute available online, you can achieve fluency using mostly that course, but it's very long and involved . Nobody said learning Chinese would be quick or easy (if they did, they are idiots), but if you work hard, you can do it!
