I don't see the problem

I have read some of the reviews about Helen Gilhooly's Japanese course and they were really unfair and trashing it a lot. I really don't see what the huge deal is. I know there is a chorus of purists and polyglots who "sing the body Kana" meaning they feel any course that has no Kana/Japanese script is not worth even a sniff or to be avoided like the Plague but the bottom line is, everyone learns differently and some people who are learning Japanese, do not *want* to learn to read Japanese but only speak it conversationally. I think Romanji does have its place in learning, albeit you can get "Romanji addicted" and it can be a pain to stop depending on it. It is not that difficult to give up Romanji if you really want to and serious about it; and you get off it *way* early as soon as you recognize the dependency is setting in. I just started Japanese and I have never ever heard the language in any kind of depth before, only in passing and have no experience in the language at all. So Romanji for me is actually helpful but I am also learning the script at the same time and it has been slow going for me. To me, it is not easy learning to say, pronounce and recognize the script as some people say or can do. I also know that some things are not going to be exact in pronunciation because there are some sounds even Romanji can't duplicate properly, so I make sure I depend more on my course's speaker to pronounce words than the Romanji and I only depend on it if I get stuck and truly can't figure out how to say something. I know that when I finally get how to read the script, I won't have to worry about it anymore.
This course is actually really good. I like how the grammar is broken down in to manageable pieces so that us grammar challenged individuals, like me, who flunked English class, can actually get it and not feel frustrated when it shows up in the course. She uses some silly but cool mnemonics to help you remember how to count up to 10 in Japanese and the way the course is laid out is not bad. I like that is has a little bit of a storyline running thru it about Robert Franks and what he does for a living and situations of living and surviving in Japan. I also like that it teaches you 10 new vocabulary words first *before* you read the dialog and then you listen to the dialog to recognize the words you just learned and then exercises follow that to reinforce what you just learned. As far as script goes, you do actually learn Hiragana and some Kanji in this course thru out the book. Total, you learn about 82 Kanji and 52 compound words, not a whole heck of a lot but more than most who have no script at all. Starting at chapter 2, you gradually learn each Hiragana character and pronunciation and in later chapters, she gives one or two dialogs in Japanese script to read. You get introduced to a few Katakana but not much and that is in like the last chapter of the book. Plus, you all do know TY also sells her book to learn Japanese script, right? Just buy that with this and end of Romanji issue. I think probably the best thing for me is that it is not "touristy". I **hate** language learning books that think only people who are going to visit some place for a week or something on vacation are the only people who want to learn another language, so the book is filled with crap like, "how much is the room?" "where is the zoo?" "where can I buy a toothbrush?", etc. Nothing practical for actually talking and making small talk with actual people who speak the target language. Unfortunately,that is a lot of what we serious language learners have to put up with; weeding thru the garbage to learning the actual meat of the language later on.
Overall, I think this course has gotten a bad rap. It is quite good and if you follow the lessons, do the work and study a little everyday, by the time you get done with this course you will feel confident to continue on and learn more Japanese plus script and have fun doing it. I do disagree, however, with the author's claim that you will be at a intermediate level by the end of the book but I think you will be at a high-beginner, starting low-intermediate level than intermediate and have a great foundation on which to build quickly with other materials to fluency. If you are going on a trip, then this might be a bit more than you can chew and you might wanna try a different course because this book assumes (thankfully!) that you are not looking for short term but in it for the long haul and plan to continue with Japanese learning after this course is finished.

Not what I expected but still a good book

I have been picking up the Japanese piece bit by bit and I wanted a book that could get me from amateur learning to pro learning. I already had the Teach Yourself Complete Spanish, and it is amazing with my Spanish studies so I decided to get the Teach yourself Japanese.
When I got, which was new but from a user and not amazon. The pages were not as high quality as the Spanish book that I had and worst of everything was written in Romaji, which was a big turn off for me. Other than the paper quality and the Romaji, I can tell that it is a great book for someone who wants to learn how to speak and understand Japanese when it is spoken.
The book does have reading section but they are spread out thought the book and you can go through the whole book without learning any characters, if you wanted too ( the book even said so). This book needs to be accompany by other materials so you'll be able to read but if you just want to speak it and understanding Japanese, when it is spoken this is a great book. It just wasn't, exactly what I was wishing for.
p.s. I found out that it is the newest edition and not an old copy so yeah :)

Not bad, but A TON of errors

Its teaching method is helpful in making me remember the verbs and particles. I do enjoy using this book and I like the end of chapter activities, however it is a major disappointment to learn from a book that contains so many errors.
From printing errors (wrong diagrams), spelling errors(wrong spelling for verbs), pronunciation errors(the Japanese alphabet 'a' isn't pronounced like the 'a' in 'man') and wrong verb translations.
I find myself often wondering if what they are teaching me is wrong instead of focusing on actually learning!
