About the Author
Michael Thambynayagam has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester, England. He is Director of Technology and Senior Adviser at the Schlumberger headquarters in Sugar Land, Texas. Dr. Thambynayagam has been granted a number of patents in technologies related to petroleum engineering and has published generously in the scientific literature. He is one of the leading experts in the world on the topic, and his expertise derives from a long career in dealing with important practical and industrial problems covered in this book.

The Diffusion Handbook

This hardcover book of R. K. Michael Thambynayagam spanning more than two thousand pages provides a self-contained and exhaustive compilation of more than a thousand detailed solutions to diffusion problems dealing with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. The approach that the author has emphasized and very eloquently presented in his book is based on the use of integral transform techniques for reducing linear diffusion differential operators with or without sources to simple algebraic equations or ordinary differential equation(s).
Due to the author's strong association with the oil & gas industry, the book addresses pressure diffusion, which apply to non-deformable porous media filled with slightly compressible fluids. However, the book will be an important reference handbook for practitioners and graduate students in many other disciplines such as conductive heat transfer, mass transfer in dilute systems, and diffusive electromagnetic phenomena, including processes in need of constructing Green functions for solving problems with arbitrary sources.
The four well-known textbooks on the subject by Carslaw & Jaeger, Raghavan, Crank, and Ozisk, while of great value to the field of diffusion, may not be readily useful for practitioners in the industry who seek ready-made solutions to practical and industrial problems. In separable geometries, this book encompasses a large variety of problems, many of which are not to be found in the well-known texts. In that sense, the book fills a gap in the published literature in this area. I am not aware of any other book in the literature that deals with the subject matter of this book in the way it is dealt. The book is exceedingly well-organized--a tour de force! The book is a true magnum opus. Congratulations to the author on this impressive undertaking that will undoubtedly culminate into a seminal reference in the near future.

On the Diffusion Handbook

In the petroleum field the analytical tradition has been struggling for past few decades, due to the enormous development and success of numerical methods. Various authors have attempted to create a renaissance of analytical techniques in the petroleum reservoir engineering domain, and this work is perhaps the epitome of such movement and resurgence (notwithstanding its applicability to other Eng. disciplines). As a veteran of this industry I can only relate how enlightening I found the analytical works of Morris Muskat to be, insights that have served me quite well over couple of decades of technical work; though this work has less narrative and far more mathematics, I still believe it is a refreshing and necessary addition to the eclectic knowledge base of reservoir engineering, the foundation of the vast and complex earth resources industries, and hence it will greatly serve future generation of practitioners of this field. The author deserves our recognition for his perseverance to put together a work of such scale, and for breeding new life into this vital yet endangered genre of scholarly inquiry.
