One of the Best Books on Leadership

This book offers something that many business books lack: real-world advice. I do enjoy learning from the many books that offer insight, concepts, and theory, but for once I'm very pleased to find a book that offers relevant examples and suggestions for implementation. Balzac is an entertaining writer and a compelling teacher. He keeps the discussion interesting, yet doesn't get so lofty that one needs to have the same exact background and education as the author in order to follow the conversation. I also personally appreciate the genuine lack of pontification.
The book does offer a roadmap or template for organizational development, but to me it's really a book about being a more thoughtful, deliberate leader. I've already implemented some of Balzac's sound advice, and intend to follow through on much more.

How to Make Things Work

Balzac offers a very clear, concise, and witty overview of key organizational issues. The combination of theory and practice is very compelling - the book builds a step-by-step framework of organizational theory, and gives numerous examples of how these concepts have played out in real-life.
Extremely readable, extremely useful in helping to both understand the concepts and put them to use. This is the kind of book you can get a lot out of yourself, but can also give to colleagues to help them understand what organizational development is about and why it's important to them.

A consultant's musings on OD - NOT a course

This book is reasonably enjoyable to read, as the author has a fun and informal tone. And there is some good content, but it is way too informal to be called a "course". Really, it is like chatting with this guy over coffee about his work. There isn't a good theoretical overview of the field and there is a lot of repetition. If you're looking for something more rigorous, try the Jossey-Bass Reader on Organization Development.
