About the Author
Ronni L. Gordon, PhD, is a prominent author of foreign language textbooks, reference books, and instructional multimedia programs. She is vice president of Mediatheque Publisher Services, a leader in the development of foreign language instructional materials. She holds a PhD in Spanish language and Spanish and Spanish American literature from Rutgers University, and has taught and coordinated Spanish language programs and taught Spanish American literature at Harvard University and Boston University. An education consultant, she has read in foreign languages for the National Endowment for the Humanities, presented at the United States Department of Education, and consulted on states' K-12 academic standards for world languages. She is an associate scholar of a Philadelphia-based think tank and is chairman of the board of directors of Dolce Suono Ensemble.
David M. Stillman, PhD, is a well-known writer of foreign langauge textbooks, reference books, and instructional multimedia programs. He is president of Mediatheque Publisher Services, a leader in the development of foreign language instructional materials. He holds a PhD in Spanish linguistics from the University of Illinois, and has taught and coordinated foreign language programs at Boston University, Harvard, and Cornell. He teaches languages and linguistics and coordinates an innovative program of student-led conversation practice at The College of New Jersey. He is a frequent presenter at national and regional conventions of language educators, has consulted on states' K-12 academic standards for world languages, and has been appointed to national committees devoted to the improvement of teacher training.
The Gordon-Stillman author team has written more than forty foreign language textbooks, multimedia courses, and reference books.

Used for teaching French

I used this when I was teaching French. I have a degree in French, am fluent, and had worked in France for a year. There were still times that I needed a quick, clear explanation and example of a grammatical construct, or some supplemental practice exercises for my advanced students, and this book had what I needed. The index is very complete, and gets you where you need to be quickly.

Incroyable!!!

I had French for 3 years in high school (many years ago), and wanted to study a bit for an upcoming trip. I have a couple dozen miscellaneous French books that I purchased in search of the elusive perfect book. This book has everything that I was looking for. It is extremely thorough. It is very up to date, with phrases like surf the Internet, save/delete a file, etc. It has enough exercises to reinforce the material but not so many as to overwhelm you. And most importantly, it is action packed! For example, the first chapter, at 14 pages, teaches one the present tense of enough regular verbs to have a fairly solid repertoire for communicating. And the second chapter at 16 pages, teaches one enough present tense of irregular verbs to round out one's verb repertoire. Two chapters into this book, and I feel like I know enough present tense verbs to communicate the vast majority of one's needs.
Only a couple drawbacks:
1) The book starts at a level that would probably best serve those with some background of formal classroom education in French, as opposed to those learning it for the first time. If you've never studied French formally, I highly recommend using the "Look Inside" feature to check out the first chapter, to see if you might be overwhelmed by this book. The first chapter is quite representative of the academic level of the book, so if you can follow it, you should be fine.
2) CD-ROM only works with Mac OS X 10.3.x, 10.4.x, and 10.5.x., a rare occasion where you're actually better off having older software/equipment!
Since the CD-ROM did not work with my system, I cannot attest to the quality of it for assisting with pronunciation. I have used Google Translate to assist with pronunciation, and French n Action for rounding out my auditory comprehension skills.

CD-ROM now works with a Mac

The glowing reviews for earlier editions of this book still apply, so I won't repeat them. Just wanted to let fellow Mac users know that the CD-ROM that comes with this 2nd edition of the book does work for us now. It loaded easily and is working perfectly on my Macbook so far, though admittedly I have not used it extensively yet. Thank you, authors!
