About the Author
Hugh Baker taught Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, for 36 years. Ho Pui Kei teaches Cantonese as a foreign language in Hong Kong.

Unfortunately a Must-Buy

This book has been released at least twice before under the title "Teach Yourself Cantonese". The dialogs have not changed, so don't bother buying this if you already have "Teach Yourself Cantonese". I have a few problems with this book:
- It progresses too quickly. It's so challenging that it took me three tries to get through without quitting. When I did make it through, it took over six months of work. As a comparison, it only has about half the audio content of the beginner Assimil courses, but probably covers about the same ground.
- There's not enough work on recognizing and reproducing the sounds of Cantonese. Some of the phonetics and tones can be very tough and make the dialogs much harder to get through if you're uncomfortable with them. See Popup Cantonese (dot com) and check out there Basic Cantonese level podcasts for a good intro before starting this book.
- There are no sentence translations. They only give you word lists and expect you to translate the sentences for everything past the first few lessons. This is extremely time-consuming and makes me feel like I might as well have transcribed and translated Cantonese content myself from, say, a movie. I'd have to bring problem sentences to my Cantonese-speaking friends to see if my translations were correct. Often they were not. If you don't have Cantonese-speaking friends, then good luck on translating it accurately.
- The CD tracks are two dialogs to a track. Why? I had to manually rip and edit the tracks so that they'd only have dialog to a track so that I could drill it with repetitive listening.
- The audio doesn't always use the same words as the transcription, and that confused me a number of times while drilling the audio.
- Some of the actors speak very quickly and can be hard for a beginner to understand.
The things I like about the book:
- It's a good source of dialogs to study. They're just about the right length--about two minutes each--and they are entertaining as well (once you translate them).
- The grammar is kept to a minimum and done after each dialog is presented. They do a good job of predicting the questions I'd have and I'd only occasionally I'd have unanswered grammar questions.
- It uses Yale romanization which is the easiest to read in my opinion. The first edition used a more difficult system, so I'm glad they switched it.
Being one of the few Cantonese learning resources out there for beginners, it's still a must-buy despite its shortcomings.

A awesome book to get started in Cantonese but it's far from perfect...

Complete Cantonese: A Teach Yourself Guide by Hugh Baker is a great book to get started with when you want to learn Cantonese. This book uses Yale Cantonese Romanization which is the most intuitive Romanization system for native English speakers. The book is broken up into 26 different chapters with two dialogues and sets of vocabulary each. There are also short exercises at the end of each chapter to back up what you have learned. Furthermore, there are grammatical explanation sections as well as cultural insight sections throughout the chapters to ensure that you not only learn the grammatical mechanics of Cantonese, but the culture behind it as well. There is also a Cantonese to English dictionary in the back of the book that you can use to look up the specific meanings of words you have covered, and what chapter in the book the word first appeared. There is also a grammatical summary section in the back of the book that summarizes all of the Cantonese grammar taught throughout the book. Finally, there are four revision sections that use all of the vocabulary and grammar up until that point in the book. By mastering these revision sections you can ensure that you have not missed much in the past chapters of the book. The only downside is that there are not Cantonese characters for these revision sections. therefore, you have to depend on your Cantonese knowledge up until that point to figure out what is being said(99% of native Cantonese speakers cannot read Cantonese Romanization and will be unable to help you).
I really like this book and use it when I conduct my Cantonese lessons, but there are several things about this book that need to be fixed in future revisions.
First, my biggest gripe with Complete Cantonese is that it still uses a seventh "high falling tone" in Cantonese. While this is great for reference, the truth is that the "high falling tone" has become combined with the "high tone" in modern Cantonese, and is rarely distinguished anymore except in a few rare cases. Therefore, you will need to go through the entire book and change all of the "high falling tones" into "high tones" which can be troublesome and annoying. Second, the recordings do not match the dialogues in the lessons. This is because the book has been revised several times and the publisher never bothered to update the recordings to reflect these changes. Third, many of the Cantonese characters used in the book are not standard. I suppose you can argue that there is no standard set of characters for Cantonese, but there is an unofficial set used by native Cantonese speakers, and book does not use them. Fourth, some of the phrasing in this book are rather outdated and awkward in 2014. There is nothing worse than wasting your time learning something archaic that will result in a native speaker laughing at you when you say it. Fifth, the binding of this book is rather cheap. I treat my books with care, but this book has fallen apart on me a few different times(I'm on my third copy). Sixth, the book uses "lak" an awful lot when a simple "la" would do just fine. Seventh, this books mixes up the 啦 and 喇 characters constantly. The Romanization is always correct, but the characters are constantly switching around(啦 is typically "tone one" while 喇 is typically "tone three"). Finally, the book progresses at a fast pace for many learners. I've had several students complain to me that they can't keep up. Therefore, I have to frequently supplement the material in this book with the book Colloquial Cantonese: The Complete Course for Beginners by Dana Scott Bourgerie. These two books used in conjunction together really give students a strong and stable foundation in Cantonese.
In any case, despite these shortcomings, I think this book is one of the best readily available Cantonese books on the market today. It's very consistent and seriously challenges the learner to improve their Cantonese at a rapid rate. Once you master the Yale system and are familiar with the tones in Cantonese, you will have a strong enough foundation to take full advantage of this book. After you have mastered this book, you will possess the skills to move on to the intermediate level in Cantonese and beyond. If Complete Cantonese: A Teach Yourself Guide is your first step in your Cantonese journey, it's a step well placed.
PROS:
* Detailed introduction to the Yale Cantonese Romanization system.
* Detailed description of the Cantonese tonal system.
* Yale Romanization most intuitive Cantonese Romanization system for native English speakers.
* 26 uniquely different chapters each with two dialogues and sets of vocabulary.
* The dialogues and vocabulary are interesting and practical.
* Cultural insight sections that explain Hong Kong and Cantonese culture.
* Detailed grammatical explanations as well as a grammatical summary section in the back of the book.
* Recordings to accompany the dialogues(a bit inaccurate though).
* Four revision chapters that summarize everything you have learned up until that point.
* A Cantonese to English dictionary in the back of the book.
* Fairly inexpensive.
CONS:
* The seventh "high falling tone" in Cantonese is included which is not really distinguished anymore in modern Cantonese.
* Recordings don't match the dialogues.
* Cantonese characters are not standard and are at times awkward.
* Some outdated and awkward phrasing that is not used anymore in 2014.
* Binding is weak and the book will eventually fall apart with regular use.
* Some of the characters are outright incorrect, but the Romanization is always correct(stick with that when in doubt).

My first Cantonese course

So far, this is the course everybody should buy when first being introduced to Cantonese. It is, indeed, a complete Cantonese course that will teach you how to read, understand, and speak Cantonese Chinese up to an intermediate level, although not write but writing the characters correctly is something else entirely that can quickly be learned another time. I came to this book with an intermediate level of Mandarin so it made this course much easier to me, although still challenging to me in how the content progresses later on throughout each lesson. It comes with two audio CDs that will read you the dialogues with native-Cantonese speakers of the language.
Strong points of this course
-Audio with dialogue in characters and Yale, really helps you to learn Cantonese
-Audio is clear
-True written Cantonese, what I mean by this is the fact that the book uses characters in the way colloquial Cantonese is spoken as opposed to standard Chinese which is the Putonghua (Mandarin) Chinese standard.
-Lots of content and the book does a good job of knowing what kind of questions you are going to have.
There are just a few problems I had with this course in which I will point out.
-Not enough audio and not much repeating the dialogues; To me, it is very helpful if I hear words and phrases constantly repeated like the Pimsleur courses.
- Too fast; I feel it advances too fast for me with all the vocabulary being thrown at you by the second part of the first lesson. So it is important to truly master each lesson before even thinking of moving on to the next where more vocabulary and grammar will be thrown at you.
-No English translation on dialogues on later lessons; I don't mind this although just a head-up for everyone who really feel they need a translation of the dialogues.
This course overall, is very good and I like it! I recommend it to everyone starting to learn Gwongdongwaa :) One of the best courses out there for learning this beautiful language.
