About the Author
Robert Arp, Ph.D. is a Philosopher and Ontologist with the Analysis Group, LLC. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and has taught philosophy and related courses since 1996 at St. Louis University, Webster University, Jefferson College and Lewis and Clark Community college, among others. Dr. Arp has written extensively on the topic of philosophy in the form of books, anthologies, and articles.
Jamie Carlin Watson, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Young Harris College. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy, and has taught philosophy and related courses at Florida State University, Barry University, Florida A&M University, and the University of Montana.

Solid reference

I am a PA and much of my work involves dealing with bioethics. I have worked hard to incorporate the philosophic foundations of ethics (as defined within western philosophy) into my thought process, but most texts are written at a level which requires a great deal of time and energy for me to distil down to usable information. Having read some of Rob Arp's work before I was hopeful this would be a good fit and I was not disappointed. Certainly not a book for a neophyte, I found the discussions challenging in parts but was always rewarded by a greater understanding of the issues. Some of the graphics were less than stellar (David as a pile of dust) but no harm done.
Although I am new to Dr. Watson, the entire book seemed consistent in tone and content, I would strongly consider other books by either author. If McGraw-Hill is listening, a similar volume by these authors on Bio-ethics would be greatly appreciated. Eastern Philosophy would also be nice.

May put a few philosophy professors out of business

This introductory book has a wide scope, examples relevant to the present day, and makes deep philosophical thinking accessible without dumbing it down. In particular I recommend the section on "What is Philosophy" for its clear and innovative explanation of what philosophers do and why everyone should read a little philosophy in life. In fact, this is a mini-course in philosophy that anyone could take in their own spare time to deepen their thinking and understand alternative paradigms for morality and truth. My only worry is that the book might put a few philosophy professors out of business!

Book Review

This is an easy-to-use, hip, provocative introduction to philosophy! Arp and Watson are clear-headed, energetic, amusing, and engaging. Even when you might disagree with some point or other, Arp and Watson seem to welcome or even relish such independent creative disagreements. I highly recommend this book.
