Far more accessible than other books

This book is a great introduction to Old English. After losing my copy of the last edition, I purchased it to keep on hand for reference. It seems to me (without having the old version on hand) that there have been some changes. This book contineus to be the most accessible introduction to Old English text on the market. Basically, this book tries to approach Old English more like a natural language than any other Old English textbook I have seen.
The only genuine complaint I have is that some words are not either in the unit's vocabulary or in the glossary in back, especially in the supplementary readings. I understand that the goal of those is to read for a general gist than for 100% accuracy, but for the person who wants to extract as much knowledge from one book as possible, it would be nice to not have to resort to a supplemental dictionary.
It approaches things from a wider goal of teaching you words and small phrases and then slowly introducing grammatical concepts as you proceed through the units. Closer to the beginning, the book teaches you tricks like "Look out for the -on ending, it tends to be with plural verbs" or "Look at these words that all end in -ne. You can tell they're masculine direct object nouns and adjectives by that" at first rather than immediately throwing a complete grammar at you. By the time the book starts introducing charts for declension and conjugation you have a feel for them already. Once you've gotten to the end of the book, you more or less can more or less start to read what you'd like with the help of a reference book or two.
While the CDs aren't necessary, they're still a nice help. I bought the older version without the CDs, and now that I've gone through this book with the CDs, I feel like I have a better grasp on pronunciation. I'd buy it with them since it's not that much more. Plus, listening to the language without having the written words in front of you feels like it forces your brain to attempt to understand it immediately.
Highly recommended, especially for at home use. Probably the only book that could be used as a textbook outside of a graduate-level classroom. Books that are basically grammars and readers are daunting even for someone who has learned an inflected language before, especially without an instructor. Anyone who has given up before but wanted to learn it should try this.

If you're not headed into a deep, technical class on Old English, this is the best book on learning Old English that I've seen.
Atherton has done ordinary folks a huge service with his work on this. In addition to presenting the language from the very beginning, in itself rare, he also gives a lot of cultural context. This context is critical, since you can't visit Old England the way a student of Spanish or Danish can visit Spain or Denmark. He really takes a gentle approach to the inflection of Old English, which should aid learners who *don't* know an inflected language. Of course, for those of us who do, it's nice to have the various uses of the cases spun out one by one.
The texts selected for the book are of a wide variety and should hold your interest. If you don't like the Joseph story from the Bible, there are snips from the anglo-Saxon Chronicle. And if you don't like either of those, there are riddles and snips of poetry.
Another nice touch is the audio that comes with. It really makes the language come alive. As for how accurate the recordings are to how the language was spoken, I cannot say--but they breathe life into it and that's enough for me. In any case, spend the extra for the audio.
Is the book perfect? No, but it's so much better than everything else (not meant for graduate level classes) that there's no reason to get anything else for a first look at Old English.

Solid Introduction to OE

This is simply a great little book. I don't think there's a better into on the market for the layman. I quite like the selection of readings, and the organic approach (rather than grammatical) will appeal to many people.
The CDs are a great addition, with one caveat. The readers of the examples are native speakers of modern British English. As such, they sometimes fall back on their own speech habits and mispronounce words here and there. For example, they tend to drop the "r" at the end of a word when it should be pronounced, and sometimes use the wrong "a" sound, usually with words like "and" which in OE should rhyme with modern English "pond", not "hand", IIRC. If you double check the pronunciation guide you should be fine. Regardless, they are still a great help in helping the student get the rhythm of the speech and are well worth getting. Put them in your car and listen to them on your commute. I found that listening ahead of where I was at in the book helped greatly... my ear started picking out things I had not yet read in the book.
In the end, this book makes learning OE easy and enjoyable. It's a great deal and I'm very glad I purchased it.
