A great review guide

First of all, it needs to be said that there are a few typographical and/or mathematical errors in this book. I wish I had documented them as I worked my way through it. Now, given that this book was 100% review for me, I was able to spot most of the errors right off the bat.
With that said, I think that this book is perfect for someone who needs to brush up on some algebra skills. I purchased this along with Huettenmueller's College Algebra book in an effort to try to test out of having to take an algebra class in college. I took three years of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus in high school. I was hoping that with an adequate amount of review, I would be able to avoid having to take it in college 20 years later. Well, I passed the test with flying colors, and I don't think I could have done it without this book. And the best news is, now that I have re-acquainted myself with all of those rules a second time, I don't think I'll ever forget now.

Helpful, but...

The typographical errors the last reviewer spoke of may not be a big deal for one who is brushing up on previously learned skills, but for one who is trying to learn for the first time it is a really big deal. It is frequently hard for me to tell if I actually got a problem wrong or if it is a typo in the book! I expected much better error checking from a McGraw Hill book. If not for the errors, I would likely give the book a 4 or 5 star rating. The methods are sound, even if the editing is sloppy.

What's worse is when you have actually made an error but ...

Bought this book as a review prior to college calculus. This might not be a deal breaker for some readers, but as other reviewers have commented, the typographical errors in this book are egregious. Seriously, you will spend more time trying to figure out how you got an answer "wrong" then you will on the rest of the book combined. What's worse is when you have actually made an error but you can't be sure if it's you or the book.
Additionally, while the book will teach you how to solve specific problems, do not expect to walk away with an understanding of algebraic concepts. The level of learning here is shallow in the extreme. As someone looking to enhance their understanding of fundamentals, this book provided very little.
