Not just 500 questions, but fantastic answers!
By Scrapple8
While "500 AP U.S. History Questions to know by test day" is designed to prepare students for the multiple-choice questions on the AP U.S. History Exam, it can also help students ace the SAT U.S. History Exam. The answer explanations in this book are particularly useful and educational. In most cases, all of the choices in the multiple-choice question are analyzed.

If there are some gaps in the way that you are prepared for the exam, this book will fill them for you rather than just tell you the correct answer for a particular problem. For example, in a question about the arms-for-hostages controversy in the Reagan Administration, there are four other issues listed. Rather than just tell us about the Iran-Contra Affair, the answer also informs the reader about these other issues: the S&L Crisis, Whitewater, the H.U.D. Scandal, and the Inslaw Affair.

The 500 questions in this book are useful in preparing for the "factoid" questions on the S.A.T. U.S. History Exam. These questions are not similar to most of the questions that you will face on the S.A.T. Exam, just some of them. As such, you should use this book in addition to, not as a replacement of, books that prepare you for the S.A.T. Exam.

For the A.P. Exam, this book ought to be wonderful. The rest of this review considers some of the mistakes in the book, which hopefully will be corrected in a subsequent edition.

There are four questions where the Answer Explanations have the incorrect answer. #303 is not (B), because the 15th Amendment was introduced after the Wade-Davis bill. The answer explanation states this correctly, and seems to indicate that choice (D) is the correct answer, because Wade-Davis upped the loyalty oath percentage to 50%.

#305 explains that Republicans lost the House after the Depression of 1873, so the answer should be (D). It cannot be (C), because Hayes won the following election - in fact, a Democrat would not carry the White House until Grover Cleveland did so in 1884.

Question #359 refers to the Open Door Policy, which was announced by John Hay near the conclusion of the 19th century. Hay wanted to get the United States into Chinese Markets, not keep Europeans out. While America's military might was substantial in the 1890s, the nation could not lock out Europe. (C) is not the answer - the answer should be (B).

Finally, question #375 says (B) is not a provision of the Clayton Anti-Trust Act, but the act was designed to attack oligopolistic trusts as well. The Clayton Act was friendlier to unions, eliminating a stance made possible by the Sherman Antitrust Act, that labor unions were trusts and could be regulated by such legislation. (A) is the correct answer.

Hopefully, the next edition of this book will change these errors, as well as some minor typographical mistakes. The explanation for #425 refers to the "1835 Wagner Act," a mistake that everyone will probably recognize. There is also a conflict in an answer for choice #20, and the explanation for #27. Both instances refer to the communal lands held by Native Americans in Mexico. Wikipedia says that the correct spelling is ejido, so "ejiado" ought to be corrected.

There are two other answers that should be rewritten for clarity. #102 states that John Hanson designed the Great Seal of the United States as well as many other things. Wikipedia says otherwise. In fact, Wikipedia has so many hands in the soup of the Great Seal that it is difficult to define it's creator.

Question #310 claims that U.S. vs. Cruikshank declared that only states could enforce the KKK Act of 1871, although the answer explanation, and Wikipedia, says that the Colfax massacres were tried under the Enforcement Act of 1870. You could claim the former if you took a broad explanation of the court decision in Cruikshank, that the 14th Amendment extended no federal provisions to state cases. At the time, the Slaughterhouse cases, Bradford vs. Illinois, and the Civil Rights cases of 1883 refused to use Equal Protection of the 14th Amendment to extend federal protection to state cases. At the time, the court acquiesced to legal precedent set by Barron vs. Baltimore. These cases were all vitiated, mostly by the activist Warren court, but to a lesser extent by the Hughes courts of the 1930s. The dissenting opinions of Louis Brandeis formed the legal opinion for extending the Equal Protection clause.

Question #404 should also be rewritten, because the leader of the Indiana Klan, D.C. Stephenson, was not convicted of raping a minor. Stephenson was convicted of brutally raping Madge Stephenson, a 28-year old secretary.

Excellent Choice. A Must Have for AP US History
By tiredofschool
I bought this book to study for a midyear exam in my AP US History Class

It's questions are quite good. About half of the questions are simple fact recall questions, while the other half is more analytical. One of the best parts about this book is the EXTREMELY DETAILED explanations of the answers in the back. About 1/3 of the book is the questions, while the other 2/3 is answer explanations. Every question has a good paragraph of background information and a detailed explanation of why that answer choice is correct and why certain distractor choices are wrong.

This book is very good. I strongly recommend it!
