Very effective and very clear
By Carl DeVarona
I am astonished that this book costs less than the Princeton Review PSAT book, but is twice as big and twice as useful!!! I am a 20-year high school teacher in the Chicago suburbs who also tutors students for the SAT, ACT and PSAT, and this is hands down the most effective tool for tutors and students who are willing to do some serious work preparing for the PSAT. Don't be fooled-the PSAT is important, even though it's a practice SAT, because it is used to determine who qualifies for National Merit Scholarships.

The authors of this book, Christopher Black and Mark Anestis, clearly understand how students learn, what mistakes they commonly make, and how to explain difficult concepts in a way that kids can understand. (Princeton Review and the others don't even pretend that they can improve students' reading or math skills, and so they don't.) Even better, "McGraw-Hill's PSAT" provides tone of practice for students who want to work on improving their reasoning skills, and plenty of diagnostic tests with substantial answer explanations.

Whather you are a parent, a student or a tutor, you will want to use this book.

Black and Anestis get it exactly right in this book: the PSAT and SAT are not simply tests of "how well you know how do take multiple choice tests" (as the Princeton Review claims ad nauseum). It's a test of reasoning skills, and only students who improve those reasoning skills can hope to see great PSAT or SAT score improvements. I've been using this book for a full year, and my students have improved their scores by an average of close to 100 points per section (or 10 points per section on the PSAT). Of course, I'm willing to take a certain amount of that credit, but I don't think it would be nearly as easy without this book.

A hidden gem! Just AMAZING! (A student's review)
By Student97
The most amazing book out there!!! A great supplement to the Blue Book.
Get these 2 books and you will kill two birds with 1 stone! This is a long review, brace yourselves! A review for each section!

Here's the story if you are willing to read it: I am an incoming sophomore practicing early for the
PSAT/NMSQT. When I first started to study, I had no clue which prep
book would be the best. If you are anything like me or in my postion, you would feel overwhelmed. There were just a myriad of books to choose from: Barrons, Princeton Review, Kaplan, Sparknotes, The "Official" SAT book (aka
"Blue Book)! So I went on sites like yahoo answers and
collegeconfidential.com to ask. They all said to buy the blue book
first, that was the most important since it is made by the makers of
the SAT and blablabla. Then they said get another book with good tips
on how to answer those questions. Again, I was met with the same
problem: What book do I choose, there are just so many! People said that "it all has to do with you and your preference, different books work for different people." With that being said, most people said to choose either Barrons (with extra-hard questions) or Princeton Review (great tips, but lacking). So I went to Barnes and Noble and decided to buy both the Blue Book and Barrons. At first, I thought it was good, but I still felt something was lacking. There weren't great explanations, plus the questions were hard. So then I went to library and got all the books I could find: Kaplan, Princeton Review, and Up Your Score. There had similar tips, only some were different but still it felt like there were all trying to beat each other and re-phrase the tips to sound cool or whatever.

ACTUAL REVIEW: Then FINALLY. I went online and stumbled on Mcgraw Hill PSAT, I admit, I was a little nervous buying yet another PSAT book, but after looking at some reviews I said "Why not try one more." I am SO glad I did. The way they teach is like they are actually teaching, not giving some tips. Even the book mentioned that their competetors like to give "tips or help crack the SAT" but that will only work to an extentant. You have to actually understand how to solve the problems. They even have things broken up into lessons. They explain things so well, that I feel like I have a private tutor sitting next to me.

Vocabulary/Critical Reading:

The best thing I liked was how they teach vocabulary. They not only have it seperated into sections, but categories to. Also, I couldn't help but notice, another review on this book (i mean no disrespect) someone else commented on how they didn't like to learn the vocab because it was "boring." Well, to that I reply: sure, vocab can be boring, there is no "fun" way to learn it, there can only be a "best" way to learn it. For me, I felt like this was the best way. Why? Well, McGraw Hill teaches you to make a flash card with front having a word in a phrase with the SAT word capitalized and the back of the card having the definition and the root definiton in (). For example on the front of a card it would say: "The lawyers SCRUTINIZED the contract" with "SCRUT being underlined then the back of the card: "to examine closely" (to examine). This is so much easier then having just a plain list of words. Barrons and Sparknotes have a great vocabulary list, but not a good way to learn it. Sure, they have "the most common roots in the back of the book" but no one ever looks there! The way they teach the critical reading section is amazing too. They not only give you helpful explanations, lessons to fit your schedule, etc. but they give you a helpful reading list to use if you want to do better on the PSAT/SAT.

MATH:

To start off, I HATE math. Me and math are enemies. I can't help it! If you can't tell already, I suck at math - it's my worst subject! I didn't even want to read the section on math, but a cajoled (SAT vocab word! myself to. But MCH teaches it so well. The explanations are just the best.

PROS: CONS:
Amazing Explanations and great strategies for all three sections There are NONE!
Lessons everyday to fit your schedule
4 practice test PLUS 2 online
Little or none (i didn't find any) errors

Lol, I sound like an ad. Well, all in all, I love the format of the book and how they teach everything. My score is already improving! If you want helpful strategies and amazing explanations, not just to "crack the PSAT or SAT" this book is for you. I wish I got this book before. All you need is McGraw Hill (and the blue book if you want, but I would save that till the actual sat).

From a Tutor's Perspective: A Great Choice
By Richard Barisi
As someone who has tutored students for the PSAT and SAT for over 15 years, I must commend the authors of "McGraw-Hill's PSAT" for a truly excellent book. It is extremely well-written and is far more useful to my students than the alternatives by Barron's, Princeton Review and Kaplan.

In contrast to the previous reviewer, I have found the critical reading portion of this book to be exceptionally well written. The previous reviewer seems to believe that the author has a conservative bias, but this shows rather weak critical thinking skills on the part of the reviewer (his claim of an 80 critical reading notwithstanding). I have read this book thoroughly, since I must have a solid recall of the book in its entirety in order to use it effectively with my students, and I can assure any reader that there is no political bias on the part of the author. In fact, the previous reviewer would do well to read the passages on pages 13 and 23 again, and to claim, with a straight face, that they reveal a conservative bias on the part of the authors. The previous reviewer seems instead to have focused on the excerpt from an essay by James Schlesinger on page 24, which is presented as a counterbalance to the more "liberal" argument about global warming with which it is juxtaposed. The previous reviewer seems to be unable to differentiate the excerpted opinions of a national pundit with the views of the authors. In fact, I commend the authors highly for including such politically intriguing viewpoints. That is what a good book SHOULD do, not simply parrot the point of view any particular reader may favor.

I should point out that, in the authors' larger book, "McGraw-Hill's SAT I," they expand on the idea of playing "devil's advocate" as an essential critical reading and writing skill, and I have used this approach with great success with my own students. The previous reviewer would do well to understand this approach, instead of cursing every argument that disputes his bias.

I actually found one of the authors (Christopher Black) to be very accessible, and had a very pleasant exchange with him contacting him through his website, and have found him to have a very level-headed and thoughtful approach to preparing students for college-level critical thinking and for standardized tests like the SAT and SAT Subject Tests.

I STRONGLY recommend this book to any tutor or student who wishes to take a serious approach to a tough test like the PSAT, particularly those who are tired of the "test-taking tricks" approach so popular in the SAT-prep franchises.
